African Monitor in partnership with Action for Sustainable Development (A4SD), distributed a survey inviting civil society groups to independently assess progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The aggregated scores contributed to both national and global evaluations of SDG implementation through 2024, following the 2023 midpoint. Respondents rated each of the 17 Goals on a scale from -5 (significant regression) to 5 (significant progress), with 2015 as the baseline. After analyzing all the responses for SDG 1 – No Poverty, received an average score of 0.64. When converted to a percentage, this equates to 12.77%, rounded up to 13%. #Bougainville #News Nine Constituencies receive grants under ABG Economic Investment Program A total of nine constituencies received their grants last week under the ABG’s Constituency Economic Investment Program. The ABG Constituency Investment Program is the government’s initiative to provide opportunities to support local institutions and grassroots people to improve their ability to raise their own internal revenue and practice self-reliance, through their business ventures. ABG Vice President and Minister for Commerce in his remarks said that Constituency Economic Investment program was a first of its kind initiative under the Toroama-Nisira government, and aimed to provide the support and space for the third tier of government to participate in economic activities. “Let me remind you once again that the objective of constituency economic investment program is to revive the economy at the grassroots level and community government level. I encourage all of us to work with our community governments and make sure unity and greater success of the projects at community level.” The Constituency Economic Investment Program is a business opportunity to generate revenue at constituency level and sustain livelihoods of the communities, and it is part of the ABG’s independence readiness plan. “It aims to strengthen the government’s work on closing the fiscal gap and enhancing welfare of Bougainvilleans.” Minister Nisira reminded the Constituency Members of the importance of accountability and responsible expenditure of the funding support, highlighting also that the Constituency Economic Investment Program has a set of guidelines and conditions for funds to be expended responsibly, generating returns in the medium to long term period. “We have responsibilities as recipients of the grant, and our responsibility to expend wisely in a manner that will benefit our respective communities,” he said. “The department has a responsibility to ensure that monitoring and evaluation is done to assist constituencies minimize the risk of business or project failure, assess constituency entities understanding of the project as well as assess progress in implementation. We must work together to achieve one common goal of fiscal self-reliance,” he added. The Department of Commerce, Trade, Industry and Economic Development will be providing support to the Constituencies, noting also that facilities such as SMEs, IPA registration and Cooperative Societies are parked under the Department and can provide the relevant support to constituencies as required. “I urge the constituency business entities to be creative and innovative in doing business.
