"Trail of the Master Sword" is a Main Quest in Tears of the Kingdom.[1]
Overview
After Link views the "Critical Decisions" Memory during "Guidance from Ages Past", Mineru informs hims that Zelda undertook a forbidden process the restore the Master Sword for him.[2] She directs him to meet with the Great Deku Tree for help finding it, as Zelda wanted him to.[3] She assures Link that the Master Sword is the key to defeating Demon King Ganondorf.[4] Afterwards, "Guidance from Ages Past" will be completed, and the "Trail of the Master Sword" Main Quest will begin.[note 1]
When Link returns to Purah to report Mineru reawakening as the Sage of Spirit, she is relieved to hear news about Zelda, though she is saddened that she had to restore the Master Sword all on her own.[6] Purah believes that the Master Sword must be somewhere in the present day, and she tells him that the Great Deku Tree can be found within the Great Hyrule Forest.[7]
Whenever Link attempts to walk through the Lost Woods, he will be overcome by fog and automatically returned to his point of entry. If Link tries to enter the Lost Woods from their southeastern entrance, Peeks will stop him and explain that it is impossible to reach Korok Forest without getting lost.[8] He also shares that a Chasm has opened in the Minshi Woods, which frightens him.[9] At the Minshi Woods Chasm, Link will find Tasho, who explains that the Koroks they were walking with jumped into the Chasm thinking they could find a way back to Korok Forest.[10]
In Minshi Grove at the bottom of the Chasm, Link can meet Nako and Mopu. Nako has become frightened of the Depths.[11] When Link approaches Mopu, they ask if he needs directions to Korok Forest.[12] If asked for further details, they point Link to the north.[13]
Along the way, Link can meet with Mokka, who identifies that fog on the roof of the Depths as being from the Lost Woods.[14] Lastly, at the center of Korok Grove, Link can meet Jatora and Maheli, who have figured out that they are beneath Korok Forest and are trying to find a way to the Surface.[15][16]
If Link Ascends through the Tooreroof Ruin at the base of the Great Deku Tree, he will emerge within Korok Forest. He finds that the Great Deku Tree appears unwell, with Gloom seeping out of his mouth. Inside the Great Deku Tree's Navel, he will find the Deku Tree Chasm, at the bottom of which is a mass of Gloom Spawn. Upon defeating the Gloom Spawn, a Phantom Ganon will appear and begin to attack Link as well.
Once the Phantom Ganon has been defeated, all of the Gloom will disappear from the Great Deku Tree. A group of three Koroks descend before Link, who thank him for saving Korok Forest.[17] They also inform him that the Great Deku Tree is waiting for him on the Surface.[18] When Link stands before the Great Deku Tree, he thanks Link for helping him despite still feeling groggy.[19] He thinks back to the last time they met with one another,[20] which starts "The Master Sword's Power" Memory.
After the Memory ends, the Great Deku Tree notices that Link is no longer in possession of the Master Sword.[21] Hearing that Link has lost it, the Great Deku Tree reveals that he can sense the Master Sword.[22] A glowing Marker appears on Link's Map, marking the Sword's location.[23] However, he notices that it appears to be moving through the Sky.[24] Following this conversation, "Trail of the Master Sword" will be completed, and "Recovering the Hero's Sword" will start.[note 2]

Afterward, Zelda and I discussed strategy. We laid the groundwork for guiding you in the distant future. Before the gloom's affliction took my life, I became a spirit and entered the Purah Pad. Then Zelda did what she felt she must and began the forbidden process. She believed you would use the Master Sword to defeat the Demon King and restore peace to Hyrule.

The sword that seals the darkness—the Master Sword—is our strongest weapon in the campaign against the Demon King. Zelda vowed to restore the blade. I have no doubt that it is somewhere in Hyrule. Seek the sacred tree of this era, which you know as the Deku Tree. Zelda intended for you to meet with him when you were ready to reclaim the Master Sword.

Go now, Link. With the sword of hope that Zelda left to you, you will surely smite Demon King Ganondorf.
— Mineru (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
You already have in hand the hope that Zelda left to you—the sword that seals the darkness...the Master Sword.

And now we have news about the princess. There's some relief in that, at least. So... In the ancient past, Princess Zelda worked to restore the decayed Master Sword and return it to your hand. Trusting that you would defeat the Demon King in the present day. She did so much, all on her own... ...
— Purah (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
The restored Master Sword is somewhere in this era. I'm sure of it. To start, you should probably talk to the Deku Tree about it, as Mineru advised. The Deku Tree is in the center of Great Hyrule Forest to the north of here. Princess Zelda left us with her final wish. It's up to us now. Talk to the Deku Tree—he may have a lead. You have to find the Master Sword!

So bad! Real bad! The Lost Woods just aren't right anymore... No matter which way I enter, the fog comes and gets me, and then I'm right back at the beginning... I can't return to Korok Forest like this. I want to go home...
— Peeks (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
I did hear that a big hole opened in Minshi Woods. Kinda scary...
— Peeks (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
I...went for a walk, and now I can't get back to Korok Forest... And my friends I was walking with jumped into this weird hole! They said we migjt be able to go back to the forest through the hole, but...do you think it's safe?
— Tasho (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
My friends and I got here by climbing through a weird hole. But...it's kinda scary here... It's so dark, and there's creepy spots on the ground... Maybe this was a bad idea.
— Nako (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Oh! Say, are you also looking for a path that leads to Korok Forest?
— Mopu (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
[To Korok Forest?] We Koroks were unable to return to Korok Forest, and we found a weird hole, so we climbed into it. Anyway, Korok Forest is in that direction. The other Koroks went that way.
— Mopu (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
That's...the lost fog! There! There! The fog up on the ceiling! You see it? That's definitely the lost fog that hides Korok Forest! I just know the forest is up above the fog. I just know it!
— Mokka (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
Wow... Do you think these are some of the Great Deku Tree's roots? That would mean Korok Forest is directly above us! But...how do we get up there? Maybe the Great Deku Tree could suck me straight up through is roots! Is that silly?
— Jatora (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
I can't figure this out... I made it this far, but it seems like there's no way up from here. If you could jump super high, straight up, you'd be in Korok Forest, but then there's the ceiling. It seems impossible...
— Maheli (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
You did it! Thank you so much, Mr. Hero!
— Korok (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
The Great Deku Tree is waiting for you in Korok Forest!
— Korok (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
... Hmmm? Ah. So it is you... I must apologize. I am still quite groggy, as though I am awakening from a bad dream. You rid me of that unpleasantness deep within me. Yes. You went to great trouble to restore me. Thank you.
— Great Deku Tree (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
It has been some time since last we spoke. Have you been well? Hmm, yes, the last time we spoke... That was when you came here with the princess to retrieve the Master Sword.
— Great Deku Tree (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
But...the sword... It would seem that you no longer wield it. Where has it gone?
— Great Deku Tree (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
What is this, then? You do not know where the Master Sword is? I see. Yet...I can sense it, even now. There can be no mistake.
— Great Deku Tree (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
It's...here.
— Great Deku Tree (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑
In the sky... I feel the Master Sword's presence strongly in this area. But...what could this mean? The Master Sword seems to be moving.
