Smog
Smog is a recurring Boss and Sub-Boss in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2]
Characteristics
Oracle of Ages
Smog appears as a gaseous, horned face that challenges Link to a deadly game,[3] which plays out over four rounds that combine traditional combat with puzzle-solving elements. Each round begins with an arrangement of solid blocks appearing in the room, and Smog dividing itself into several smaller Smog Parts. These pieces of Smog attach themselves to the solid blocks and move around their perimeters like Sparks, immune to harm from any of Link's weapons; instead Link must use the Cane of Somaria to create new blocks that divert the Smog Parts' paths, forcing them to collide and recombine into the original Smog. To aid in redirecting the Parts, some of the existing blocks can be pushed once, and the pieces can be momentarily slowed down by striking them with the Sword. If Link's use of the Cane of Somaria causes any of the Parts to detach from the blocks, they will vanish and reappear in their original positions. At any point, Link can step on a Floor Switch in the northwest corner of the room to reset the blocks and the Smog Parts to their original positions.
In the first and third rounds, Smog divides into two Parts, while in the second and fourth rounds, it divides into three. Recombining two of the three Parts forms a slower-moving, medium-sized Smog Part which must then be combined with the third piece. The small and medium Smog Parts will periodically spit blue fireballs toward Link, which can be dispelled with the Sword. When Smog is returned to its original form, it will detach from the solid blocks and slowly float in pursuit of Link, spitting lightning bolts that electrocute Link on contact. Smog is otherwise vulnerable to Link's Sword in this form and will be defeated by several strikes, setting up the next and more difficult round. After defeating Smog in the fourth round, it will leave behind a Heart Container, and the door to the Sacred Soil will be opened.

Smog appears at the end of the Eastern Temple and is fought in a similar manner as Oracle of Ages. Zelda must make use of Bind, pick up and throw Objects, or create Echoes of barriers to manipulate the path of the Smog Parts to recombine them.
At the Eastern Temple, Princess Zelda can meet a Hylian archeologist named Sago, who is afraid to enter the Temple because of the mysterious voice inside inviting him to play a game.[4] The source of this voice is Smog, who sits at the end of the Temple awaiting visitors. If Zelda meets Smog, it will challenge her to a "game",[5] beginning a battle.
In the battle, Smog will circle the Objects in the room while occasionally firing Electricity at Zelda. If Zelda is able to hit Smog enough times, it will split into three Smog Parts while making puns and taunting her.[6][6] These Smog Parts will move about the room in the same manner as Smog, and will reunite into larger pieces if they collide. To continue the battle, Zelda must force all the Smog Parts to recombine into one. Smog will again split into five Smog Parts as part of a second cycle before succumbing to damage dealt from Zelda and her Echoes. Smog then concedes defeat before flying out of the Temple and leaving behind a Piece of Heart and 59 Rupees.[7][8]
After both receiving Farore's Sanction and completing the "Let's Play a Game" Side Quest, Princess Zelda can speak with a Deku Scrub in Scrubton to discover that the same voice has appeared somewhere south of Scrubton. In order to locate the voice, Zelda must find her way into the Hidden Ruins west of Blossu's House. Smog is found at the end of the Hidden Ruins, where it demands a rematch.[9]
In this final battle, Zelda must fight Smog in a side-scrolling chamber as it immediately splits into three Smog Parts. As before, it will reform into Smog if Zelda reunites its Parts. It will split into five Smog Parts again after sustaining enough damage before being forced to reform for a final time. When it has been defeated, it will concede defeat and leave behind another Piece of Heart, 75 Rupees, and two Monster Stones.[10]

It's time for our little game! I break apart. If you can force me back together and blow me away, it ends! But before you do, I shall take a bit of your soul!!! Now begin!
— Smog (Oracle of Ages) - ↑
Bah! You scared me!
— Sago (Echoes of Wisdom)Sorry...frayed nerves. The name's Sago—I'm an archaeologist. Is there any particular reason you're here?
— Sago (Echoes of Wisdom)I hope it's not to go inside. There's a monster in there.
— Sago (Echoes of Wisdom)The other day, I went inside, and I heard this creepy voice...
— Sago (Echoes of Wisdom)Let's play a game, shall we?
— Smog (Echoes of Wisdom)Oh yeah, that's exactly what it sounded like.
— Sago (Echoes of Wisdom)Yipes! OK, I'm opting out! It might sound friendly, but that's the voice of a monster! I'm not studying the temple while there are monsters about...
— Sago (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
At long last, a visitor! I was absolutely starved for company.
— Smog (Echoes of Wisdom)Let's play a game, shall we? I'll make the first move. Just try to keep up!
— Smog (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑ 6.0 6.1
I suppose you won that round. Forgive me if I get a little...broken up!
— Smog (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Guh, fine! It seems I need more practice.
— Smog (Echoes of Wisdom)When next we meet, I will emerge the victor. You can count on that!
— Smog (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
I saw something come out of the temple. It looked like a cloud!
— Sago (Echoes of Wisdom)You're telling me the cloud was a monster? And you defeated it?!
— Sago (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
Bahaha! I knew you wouldn't be able to resist a rematch.
— Smog (Echoes of Wisdom)I have prepared for this day, oh yes. This time, I will not be defeated!
— Smog (Echoes of Wisdom) - ↑
But...all my training!
— Smog (Echoes of Wisdom)Hmph! I know when I'm beaten. I'll admit it—you won.
