Cooking is a recurring mechanic in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2][name references needed]
Overview
General mechanics in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom
Basics
Instead of Hearts, Link can pick up various materials, ingredients, and critters while foraging or after defeating creatures. While some can be eaten raw to replenish the Life Gauge, cooking them can unlock their greater potential as a tool for combat and exploration. There are two primary avenues of cooking in the games: using extreme environment conditions and implementing a Cooking Pot.
When thrown on the ground near an open flame, or while within the superheated air in the Death Mountain region, materials that can recover life when eaten raw will be roasted; other materials will simply burn to ash. Roasted food will increase the amount of life a material can recover by half of its base amount, rounded to the next quarter-heart up. If there was any potential for the ingredient to give an Added Effect, it will be lost. Boiling eggs in Hot Springs is another way to "roast" Bird Eggs, a method unique to them. Mighty Thistle and Armoranth can be roasted, each gaining recovery.
Meat and seafood will become frozen when exposed to the frigid air of mountain regions or other icy effects. The amount of life recovered usually remains the same as the base ingredient, though it does gain 1:00 of Heat Resistance at level 1. Similar to roasted food, frozen food will not have their added effects activated.
The full system of cooking is utilized with a fired cooking pot. Up to five materials can be held in Link's hands and thrown into it. Depending on the combination of materials, one of the following can be made as a result:
- Meals are made with only fruit, mushrooms, vegetables, meat, seafood, and supplemental materials as ingredients. A material's life recovery is doubled, and some have hidden recovery only available when cooked. The kind of meal made will depend on the combination of materials present. If a material has an added effect, it can potentially be activated.
- Elixirs are the result of an infusion of at least one frog, lizard, or insect (collectively known as "critters") and one monster part. Any other material that is viable for meals can also be used in elixirs as long as the added effect, if any, is the same. Life recovery is doubled and added effects will be activated.
- Dubious Food and Rock-Hard Food are the results of failed recipes from inedible ingredient combinations. Minimal life recovery and no added effects will be present in these dishes.
- Fairy Tonics can occur when a Fairy assists with cooking. Fairies will typically just add ten hearts of life recovery to the recipe, but they will make a Fairy Tonic for Link if there are no other kinds of materials present, or the recipe would normally be an Elixir, Dubious Food, or Rock-Hard Food. While Fairy Tonics will not grant added effects, life recovery will still be doubled.
While cooking, Link will hum various Songs, including "Saria's Song" and "Kass's Theme".(TotKTears of the Kingdom) Up to sixty dishes of any kind can be stored at a time in Link's Inventory. Roasted and frozen food of the same type will stack together, but all other food will take a slot for each dish even if they are identical.
If total life recovery reaches thirty or more hearts, it will be converted to a full recovery. If a dish would have neither life recovery nor added effect, it will instead recover . A select few recipes give a recovery bonus, altering the amount of life recovered after doubling the total. Some materials also give a bonus, but they will only give their bonus once per unique material; duplicates will only give their normal amount. The same parts from different dragons are each considered unique materials.

Critical bonus
Every time a dish is cooked in a pot, there is a chance for a bonus to be applied to one of the dish's properties. This critical success adds a short tune during the cooking animation. It manifests as one of the following:
- extra life recovery
- 5:00 added duration
- Increased effect strength
- For time-based effects, the level increases by one.
- For the Extra Hearts effect, the extra amount increases by one.
- For the Extra Stamina and Stamina Recovery effects, the stamina wheels increase by two ⅕ notches.
- For the Gloom Recovery effect,(TotKTears of the Kingdom) the amount repaired increases by two.
If there is no added effect or duration tied to an effect then the irrelevant bonus will never be chosen.[note 5] If life recovery is already at maximum, either from the Extra Hearts effect or from reaching thirty(BotWBreath of the Wild) / fourty(TotKTears of the Kingdom)[note 6] hearts, then it will not be chosen. If an effect's strength is already at maximum, it will not be chosen. If an effect has duration, it can be chosen even if it is already at 30:00.
Critical bonuses can happen naturally with a base 5% chance to occur per unique material in the dish. Some materials will further increase the rate on top of that, but it will only be calculated in once and only by the highest chance present. Cooking between 11:30 and 12:15 on the night of a Blood Moon will guarantee a bonus. Critical bonus chance caps at 100%; no more than one bonus can be gained per recipe. If Monster Extract is present or the dish is Dubious or Rock-Hard Food, you cannot gain a critical bonus.

Dubious and Rock-Hard Food
There are certain materials that cannot be used in recipes or certain combinations that do not work together. When that happens, the result is a failed meal that restores very little hearts and will not have any added effects.
Rock-Hard Food will only restore . It occurs when any of the following materials are present, even taking precedence over Dubious Food.
Dubious Food will always restore at least . The base life recovery of the materials is added together for the total,(BotWBreath of the Wild) but only if there are two or more unique materials.(TotKTears of the Kingdom) Material recovery bonuses are not activated. Dubious Food occurs when any of the following conditions are met:
- An inedible material is present.(TotKTears of the Kingdom)
- A recipe contains a critter but not a monster part, or vice versa.
- An elixir contains materials that provide different added effects.
- An invalid combination of supplemental materials is made.
- Some can be cooked on their own for a valid recipe: these include Courser Bee Honey, Bird Egg, Fresh Milk, and any combination of Acorn or Chickaloo Tree Nut.
- Fresh Milk and Bird Egg can be successfully cooked with any other supplemental ingredient.
- There are preset combinations that do produce a valid combination, such as Tabantha Wheat with Rock Salt or Hateno Cheese. For more recipes, refer to its section (see below).
Selling
To calculate the sell price of meals and elixirs, first take the sum of the prices of the materials, then multiply it by a modifier determined by the number of ingredients; values with decimals are rounded down to the next whole number.(TotKTears of the Kingdom) Finally, round up to the nearest tens digit.(BotWBreath of the Wild) Fairy Tonics, Dubious Food, and Rock-Hard Food will only sell for 2 regardless of materials used. Sautéed Nuts made with a single acorn will sell for 8.(BotWBreath of the Wild)
- 1.5x(BotWBreath of the Wild) or 1.2x(TotKTears of the Kingdom) for one ingredient
- 1.8x(BotWBreath of the Wild) or 1.3x(TotKTears of the Kingdom) for two ingredients
- 2.1x(BotWBreath of the Wild) or 1.4x(TotKTears of the Kingdom) for three ingredients
- 2.4x(BotWBreath of the Wild) or 1.6x(TotKTears of the Kingdom) for four ingredients
- 2.8x(BotWBreath of the Wild) or 1.8x(TotKTears of the Kingdom) for five ingredients
Dragon parts and Star Fragments are considered as having a base sell price of 1 when cooked. For the other materials values, see Materials in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
Roasted and frozen food do not follow the conventional selling rules and rather have a set price. For sell prices for these foods, see Food in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

Neutral materials
Neutral materials are comprised of food and other supplemental ingredients that do not give any added effect. The full duration added by neutral materials is only given once per unique material; duplicates will be reduced to 0:30 each. They are the only ingredients where this occurs.

Monster part materials
Monster parts are to be combined with at least one critter to make an elixir. They extend added effect duration and some can increase the chance for a critical bonus. Monster parts do not add life recovery to the elixir, nor do they increase the added effect strength.
Monster parts are divided into three tiers based on the time and critical bonus chance they add: high-grade, mid-grade, and low-grade. For more information on critical bonus chance, refer to its section (see above).
Special note about rarer monster parts: with the exception of Gibdo Guts,(TotKTears of the Kingdom) which guarantee a critical bonus, the only mechanical difference between monster parts of the same grade is sell value. A Lynel's gut provides just as much added duration and critical bonus chance as a Bokoblin's. Elemental monster parts offer no special benefits to elemental added effects.
Dragon parts and Zonai(TotKTears of the Kingdom) materials are not considered monster parts.

Monster Extract
Monster Extract will remove any chance of a critical bonus and instead have random changes on expected properties of a dish.
Effect duration will be set to 1:00, 10:00, or 30:00. Only neutral materials can add more, but their duration will reduced by 0:30.
Between life recovery and effect strength, one will be chosen to receive either a positive or negative change. If one property is not present, then the other is guaranteed to be changed. The Extra Hearts effect will always have the strength changed by Monster Extract, never life recovery.
- The negative change reduces the affected property to its lowest value:
- Life recovery is set to .
- Effect strength is set to one ★.
- The positive change increases the affected property by an amount dependent on what was chosen:
- Life recovery increases by .
- For time-based effects, its level increases by one(BotWBreath of the Wild) if half of the ★ required for level 2 is reached, rounded up (e.g., an Attack Up dish would need at least ★★★ to be able to increase in level).(TotKTears of the Kingdom)
- For the Extra Hearts effect, the extra amount increases by one.
- For the Extra Stamina and Stamina Recovery effects, the stamina wheels increase by two ⅕ notches.
- For the Gloom Recovery effect,(TotKTears of the Kingdom) the recovered amount increases by two.
Even if life recovery is reduced, recovery bonuses from recipes and materials will still be applied (see the table above).
Recipe logic
In order to determine which recipe a meal becomes, the materials are compared against the required ingredients for each one until a match is found. Only one of each unique material is considered; Fruitcake must be made with one Apple or Wildberry and one of the other listed fruits that hasn't been used yet, while Copious Fried Wild Greens must be made with four different types of vegetable. The search will begin from the highest priority recipe following the tables below. Some recipes will look for specific ingredients while others watch for any ingredient in a category.

— Culinary Construct (Tears of the Kingdom) - ↑ "To tell you the truth, I've been thinking for a long time about how I could work cooking into a game somehow. But the fact of the matter is that cooking, when you stop to think about it, is pretty boring. It's really slow work and there's not a lot you can really do to make it seem very exciting.
