“Poverty is not an accident, it is man-made and can be removed by the actions of human beings.” – Nelson Mandela. A big thank you to ACFS Community Education for coming to our #MandelaDay celebration to help raise funds to end poverty by helping kids reach their full potential through Nutrition and Educational Support. #ItsStillinOurHands

Yesterday, Vodacom Group Limited posted its trading update for the quarter ended 30 June 2024. Vodacom Group CEO, Shameel Joosub commented: “During the first quarter, we officially celebrated Vodacom’s 30th birthday, having signed up our first customer on 1 June 1994 when we switched on our network in South Africa. Three decades later, the Vodacom Group serves more than 200 million customers across DRC, Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, South Africa and Tanzania – a footprint that covers more than half a billion people and is almost 12 times greater than when we launched. As a purpose-driven company, I am particularly proud of the extraordinary transformational impact we have on our customers and the economies where we operate. This has provided a strong foundation upon which we can ensure sustainable growth of our businesses, while at the same time making a significant contribution in bridging the digital divide and expanding financial inclusion in Africa”. Vodacom Eastern Cape region is spending R500 million this financial year on modernising the network, energy projects, and accelerating broadband coverage across the region, particularly in townships and deep rural areas of the province. This investment forms part of the company’s commitment to drive digital inclusion in the communities in which it operates. Zakhele Jiyane, Managing Executive for Vodacom Eastern Cape Region commented: “Our approach is to first build on our infrastructure to ensure that we can unlock the many opportunities afforded by the latest technology, such as 5G, and deliver a quality network experience for all our customers. In some areas of the province, this investment will bring connectivity to communities for the first time, driving our ambition of empowering people in an inclusive digital society. One of the big focus areas for the region this financial year is to deploy more sites in deep rural areas of the Eastern Cape. Many individuals in South Africa's remote, deep rural areas lack internet access, which prevents them from taking advantage of the socioeconomic advantages of connectivity. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the effects of the digital divide to light in dramatic ways, as people without broadband have been unable to work from home, attend classes, or receive healthcare services. The deployment of the new base station sites in deep rural areas of the province will close the digital divide and enable hundreds of thousands of people in these villages to be part of the digital economy and reap associated socio-economic benefits.” Click here to read the article: https://lnkd.in/d8fx6p-c

Central Region could spread the warmth this #MandelaDay by partnering with PEP in supporting Sunflower Hospice in the Free State Province and Lesedi Go Botlhe in the Northern Cape. We supported the Hospice with security gates to keep the children safe, 60 blankets, and restorations at the centre. Respectively at Lesedi, we helped with 60 blankets, heaters, educational toys, and mattresses. #ItsStillInOurHands 👐
