About us

This Mission includes approximately 346 U.S. and 620 locally engaged staff employed by 28 U.S. Government departments and agencies. In addition to the Embassy in Pretoria, there are Consulates in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Many U.S. Government departments, such as the Foreign Commercial Service, the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Health and Human Services, Overseas Foreign Disaster Assistance and Food for Peace have based their regional operations in South Africa, reflecting the facilities and services available in South Africa. The United States’ strong trade and business partnerships with South Africa are hallmarks for the continent. The United States is the third largest trading partner for South Africa, after Germany and China. The United States is the largest portfolio investor and the largest source of foreign direct investment in South Africa. The US Embassy regularly sponsors workshops on entrepreneurialism, small and medium business management and financial planning for businesses.     𝐀𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐧𝐢 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐢 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝: IVLP - Fundraising for Historical and Cultural Institutions Before Covid-19 and in the Present (2021). 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐢 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬: Tali Nates, founder and director of the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Center, is dedicated to educating South Africans about the dangers of xenophobia and other forms of discrimination. Born to a family of Holocaust survivors saved by Oskar Schindler, Tali uses her personal history to teach youth the importance of standing against antisemitism, racism, and other forms of othering. She promotes reconciliation in post-conflict societies and contributes to scholarly work on African historical trauma. In January 2023, she received the Secretary of State's US Religious Freedom Award. 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐕𝐋𝐏: The IVLP program facilitated valuable networking, leading to an internship program with the College of Charleston and funding for a Johannesburg project on youth leadership and democracy.
