Tswalu Kalahari Reserve is dedicated to protecting South Africa's most endangered carnivore, the African wild dog. Wild dog packs need large habitats to survive. In today's new blog post, Dr Wendy Panaino, Tswalu's assistant ecologist, explains some of the challenges: “Wild dogs are capable of escaping fenced reserves and travelling long distances. To monitor their movements, we typically collar the alpha female as the rest of the pack will follow her around. A satellite collar allows us to remotely monitor the pack’s movements across the reserve so that if they do escape, we can track them down easily. The collar updates to Earth Ranger a few times a day for remote monitoring. Our field guides and conservation students provide additional information from actual sightings.” Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/dnTfD6Nh #Tswalu #WorldWildDogDay #WildDogConservation #AfricanWildDog #EndangeredWildlifeConservation #EarthRangerTech

Loapi, Tswalu's newest camp, offers the ultimate private wilderness retreat. Sustainably designed and environmentally sensitive, the six exclusive-use homes are tucked into the contours of Bruwer Valley with expansive views of the Korannaberg from sunrise to sunset. Uncluttered, sculptural interiors, enriched by nature’s colours, forms and shapes, enhance the sense of space and evoke the carefree, nomadic spirit of camping. The bedrooms are cocoon-like sanctuaries under canvas, connecting you to the sights and sounds of the southern Kalahari. This is a place to breathe out and reconnect to yourself and nature. Tswalu is the best private game reserve in South Africa for exclusive sightings of seven shy, secretive species considered highly elusive elsewhere in Africa. The winter months are prime for tracking and finding these elusive animals, most of which have taken on an almost mythical aura in safari circles. Tswalu offers a richly layered game-viewing experience at any time of the year, often with surprise or unusual sightings that reinforce the fascinating diversity of this vast reserve and the delicate Kalahari ecosystem. The guarantee of a private safari vehicle, guide and tracker with every booking makes all the difference. At 118,000ha (292,000 acres), there is a lot to explore and we recommend booking a stay of at least four nights, whether choosing one of our luxury camps or enjoying a couple of action-packed days at the Motse followed by a private wilderness experience in one of Loapi’s exclusive-use safari homes. Guests can free up more time for exploring Tswalu by spending two nights at the Motse (the second night is on us), followed by two nights at Loapi. They'll save a travel day, too. On World Nature Conservation Day, Tswalu is thrilled to welcome these wild dog pups. The alpha female was reported denning at the beginning of July, and the first sighting of the new litter was eagerly awaited. This morning, eight pups were counted but there may be more. As a privately protected area, Tswalu offers a vast habitat for these endangered carnivores to roam and hunt. Conserving and restoring the biodiversity of the semi-arid southern Kalahari is at the heart of our conservation vision. Last year, Tswalu’s conservation team was cautiously optimistic when 12 wild dog pups were born on the reserve, swelling the existing pack and adding an exciting dimension to game drives. All of them survived. The birth of a new litter emphasises the value of Tswalu’s regenerative conservation model and the role played by vast wilderness areas when it comes to protecting these endangered species. The work of the Tswalu Foundation provides rare access to Masters and PhD students working on projects that will inform future conservation and wildlife management decisions. It adds a fascinating dimension to any safari. Between black-maned lion sightings, tracking desert black rhinos or keeping your eyes peeled for an aardvark, guests can chat with one of the PhD students, like Elizabeth Koverton, who is studying the ecological role of cheetahs and their impact on prey populations at Tswalu. Camera traps with GPS and VHF tracking collars are some of the tools of the trade helping Elizabeth to determine the density and diet of the cheetahs on the reserve and how they use different habitats. She is also studying their response to the presence of prey and competing carnivore species. Access to real-time scientific research is one aspect that gives Tswalu the edge. TSWALU - MUSES OF THE KALAHARI A solo exhibition showcasing the work of Gary Stephens, following a residency at Tswalu, has debuted in Johannesburg at Fireblade Aviation. Tswalu's iconic landscapes inspired the artist during his three-month residency - another successful collaboration between the Tswalu Foundation and Everard Read Johannesburg. The Artists in Residence programme was established as a partnership to showcase art and benefit the scientific research undertaken on the reserve - the Tswalu Foundation will receive 20% of the proceeds from each sale, donations that help fund current and future projects on the reserve.
