As the custodian of ports, rail and pipelines, Transnet’s objective is to ensure a globally competitive freight system that enables sustained growth and diversification of the country’s economy. Consequently, capital investment to modernize the port, rail and pipeline network and operations will continue to be a key priority, as will continued development of our people. #SAHHAConference2024 | Transnet Group Chief Executive Michelle Phillips presented on Transnet’s efforts toward restructuring, reorganisation, and repurposing, building on the Chairperson’s remarks. Phillips spoke to the strategic initiatives that have been developed to either optimise the business to drive efficiencies or transform the business. Transnet is undertaking these initiatives in an environment of several policy and regulatory reforms. Several initiatives are planned and underway to ensure the successful implementation of the Roadmap for the Freight Logistics System, to ensure an efficient, reliable and sustainable freight logistics system that supports the country’s economic growth and global competitiveness. The South African Heavy Haul Association (SAHHA) Conference kicked off today in Johannesburg with the theme "Positioning Heavy Haul for Success,". Transnet Group Chairperson Andile Sangqu, in his opening address, highlighted the event’s significance in fostering collaboration among stakeholders to transform the freight industry into a more efficient and globally competitive sector. The Chairperson recognised the key role played by Transnet in the value chain, and highlighted progress being made in implementation of the Recovery Plan as well as the economic reforms. “As a key player in the South African economy, Transnet is committed to stabilising its operations through the Recovery Plan, focused on improving operational efficiencies, enhancing customer service, and rehabilitating infrastructure. To achieve the sustainable performance outcomes envisaged in the Recovery Plan and position Transnet as a pivotal player in a dynamic freight logistics sector, our key priority is that of reducing and eliminating the rail and port infrastructure maintenance backlog to restore to design capacity. We are giving priority to modernising and upgrading the infrastructure for additional rail and port capacity to better support customer growth,” Sangqu added.
