Delighted to share some good news about the insulin situation in South Africa for a change! Take a look at the below article: Sanofi has been awarded a 3 year tender to provide Optisulin (analogue long-acting insulin) pens for vulnerable people with diabetes in state care: kids, the elderly, the visually impaired and those with arthritis. They've dropped the price of their pens to match the previous human insulin pens being provided, which is a big step in the right direction! We often mention the terrifying stat that diabetes kills more women than anything else in South Africa. The latest mortality report shows that actually, in 2020, diabetes killed more men AND women than anything except COVID which, given that it was 2020, makes sense. What will the 2023 results show? A year ago, we launched South Africa's first (free!) diabetes stock image library. (Maybe a world-first, but we didn't dig too deep to find out!) You can check it out at https://lnkd.in/d32_6N-P All the images are of people living with diabetes, doing diabetes things, tagged with every available diabetes keyword, as well as all the usual keywords. The goal is that people searching for diabetes imagery will see positive, inspiring images rather than plates of sugar and sad, unhealthy people (the only free options before this.) We hoped it would resonate. The numbers suggest it has 😉 In 1 year, our images have been viewed 9,158,586 times, and downloaded 47,566 times. It's all about the views, for us, because what we want to do is change people's perceptions of what a person with diabetes looks like. To break down diabetes stigma, one image at a time.
