About us
The South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) is facilitating the development of the skills and knowledge base required to ensure the success of “Blue Economy” maritime economic development initiatives such as Operation Phakisa and the African Union’s African Integrated Maritime Strategy. SAIMI serves South Africa and the African continent by promoting skills development, education, training and research that supports growth of the blue economy. SAIMI’s primary purpose is to facilitate linkages and collaboration amongst role players in maritime research, education and training in South Africa, and with similar institutes in Africa. The Institute plays a much-needed linking role between industry and educational institutions, with the aim to strengthen maritime education and research through facilitating co-ordination and co-operation among education providers. It is a multi-disciplinary, multi-stakeholder institute active in all aspects of the maritime field, including shipping, harbours, manufacturing and construction, sustainability, environment, law, and marine tourism. SAIMI also links with industry and academia in marine and coastal sciences.

SAIMI, through its Coastal Marine Tourism Skills Initiative, is currently hosting a Lifeguarding Training Programme aimed at training 20 young individuals from Gqeberha and Port Alfred. This programme seeks to train youth to become lifeguards for duty on selected beaches in the Gqeberha and Port Alfred area, to contribute to tourist and beach-user safety, to boost employment creation and to improve the reputation of the province as a preferred coastal destination. SAIMI has partnered with the National Department of Tourism (NDT), the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA), and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) in recruiting the beneficiaries .

SAIMI hosted an Ocean Governance training in Cape town, Northern Cape Lusikisiki and Mthatha. This initiative targeted sixty two (62) newly appointed DFFE mentors across South Africa, aiming to empower them to support small-scale fisheries cooperatives effectively. The seven-week program focused on business development and equipped mentors with essential knowledge about the small-scale fisheries (SSF) sector, including its governance, legal frameworks, and collective management practices. The training covered conflict resolution, communication, leadership, and fundraising skills, enabling mentors to address operational challenges within cooperatives.

SAIMI capacitated about 50 Small-Scale Fishers in the Eastern Cape from five SSF cooperatives, namely: Bulungula,Mpame, Nkanya. Lubanzi and Cwebe. The training was designed to capacitate Small-Scale Fisheries through a Personal Survival Techniques (STCW-accredited) covering ship abandonment procedures, life raft handling during emergencies, and survivor and life raft management. The training outcomes included a variety of skills and knowledge areas aimed at enhancing the safety and efficiency of fishers. aimed at not only enhancing individual survival skills but also contribute to the overall safety and sustainability of the Small-Scale Fishing community in the Eastern Cape.
