The Bursary Fund raises funds to educate and train aspirant mariners for future careers in the maritime industry.
About us
The South African Training Ship General Botha served as a nautical college from 1922 to 1989. Past students formed the Old Boys’ Association to honour the ship’s proud training legacy. As the cost involved in becoming a mariner is unaffordable for disadvantaged youth, the SATS General Botha Old Boy’s Association Bursary Fund, a non-profit and public benefit organisation, was founded in 2011. The Fund’s goal is to raise the money to encourage and provide life-changing education for young South African boys and girls so that they are better prepared to pursue careers in the maritime industry. The Bursary Fund’s Captains of Industry carefully assess and select the learners before they begin boarding in Grade 10 at Lawhill Maritime Centre (LMC). The three compulsory subjects, Maritime Economics, Marine Science and Nautical Science, are taught at LMC and languages, Mathematics, Physical Science and Life Orientation is taught at Simon’s Town School. The Bursary Fund soon realised that it was critical to provide a mentoring and extra-curricular component to supplement the academics. Mentoring revolves around marine-related events as well individual termly reviews. The extra-curricular component takes place via various activities, such as swimming, pre-sea training, camps, and sail & motor-boat training with the help of skilled volunteers. On completion of their schooling, Bursary Fund students can apply for financial support to attend approved educational training centres to study for a maritime qualification. Throughout their tertiary education they are mentored which continues when they start their sea-going careers. This winning formula has led to successful maritime careers for many former students.

Please vote for Bursary Fund Board member and student mentor Thembela Taboshe (MNI) M.Inst.D
For someone who seems to never be able to answer what it is she really does in this industry, it turns out that someone out there felt that my ‘everywhere-ness’ is something worth recognition, almost a year into my consultancy journey. The introvert in me could have done without the spotlight…a “you’re doing great” direct message would have really tugged at my heart strings, but I’m really trying to get out of my comfort zone here and allowing myself to appreciate external validation. I’m mostly an “I don’t really care if you like/see me, I like/see me” creature and I’ve always kinda been more open to constructive criticism. Being lauded makes me want to melt into invisible larva, yet I’m ever ready to share in & highlight other people’s wins (hypocrite, yes!) but that’s between me and my future therapist. …I digressed Long story short, I found myself as a FortyUnder40 nominee & finalist under the Shipping/Maritime subcategory. To vote for me, please use the link and follow the steps 👉🏾 https://rb.gy/6c535k. Please note, each vote costs R5. #fortyu40SA #Shipping #Maritime #MasterMariner #MaritimeConsultant #SOLAS #Fishing #PurposeBeforePraise🧚♀️ (Yes, I’m under 40, I don’t have a soccer age. Even I get shocked when 2024-1987 equals 37, kunini kwathiwa “Thembela Thembela” kulomhlaba?!)

A good opportunity for past Bursary Fund recipients.
