World Nature Conservation Day serves as a critical reminder of the importance of preserving our planet's diverse ecosystems and the species that inhabit them. SANCCOB's work in conservation initiatives, from penguin conservation at De Hoop Nature Reserve to the comprehensive efforts of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums- Save Animals From Extinction (AZA SAFE) African Penguin Programme, exemplifies the spirit of this global observance. By mitigating threats and fostering resilience in vulnerable bird populations, these initiatives underscore the urgent need for cohesive conservation strategies in Africa and beyond. Similarly, SANCCOB's efforts in Namibia through the Namibian Foundation for the Conservation of Birds(NAMCOB) show how international collaborations are essential in effectively protecting essential seabird habitats. Celebrating World Nature Conservation Day highlights the significance of these conservation actions and encourages everyone to contribute to the preservation of our natural world. Support SANCCOB's conservation initiatives by donating to ‘African Penguins and Seabird conservation’ and join the global movement this World Nature Conservation Day. #WorldNatureConservationDay #SANCCOBInitiatives #SupportConservation #AfricanPenguins #Seabird

About us
Established in 1968, the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) is a registered non-profit company, operating from two centres based in Cape Town and Gqeberha, South Africa. SANCCOB rescues, rehabilitates and releases all southern African seabird species, but is particularly renowned for its conservation of the Endangered African penguin, Cape gannet, and Cape cormorant. SANCCOB collaborates with conservation authorities to work toward the protection and restoration of the natural habitat essential for seabirds to survive and the marine ecosystem to function. Throughout the years, SANCCOB has worked with government and conservation authorities to implement several management programmes and projects to conserve the African penguin and other seabird species. SANCCOB is one of the members of the Global Oiled Wildlife Response System (GOWRS) and has excellent working relationships with many response organisations.

SANCCOB is happy to announce a significant milestone - successfully releasing 1000 African penguin hatchlings back into the wild earlier this year! This remarkable achievement took place at Stony Point in Betty's Bay, marking a huge step forward in our mission to support healthy seabird populations. Since 2011, our efforts in the Gqeberha and Western Cape regions have yielded incredible results with a total of 7185 wild chicks and hatchlings released. This success wouldn't be possible without our dedicated staff, passionate volunteers, and supportive partners. Thank you to everyone involved for your unwavering commitment to marine life. We love having you on our team! #Conservation #WildlifeRehabilitation #Savetheafrican penguin #Africanpenguin #SANCCOB #seabirds

Mandela Day was a day of activity and festivities at SANCCOB's Cape Town Centre. Despite the bad weather, teams from PG Bison, Davidson's Discount Boards boards, LK Kitchens and R&L Architects braved it through the storms and flooded roads to offer their kindness, support and muscle power around the centre. They got to work by assisting with laundry, general DIY work, garage cleaning, painting, seabird food prep and scooping and sweeping litres and litres of excess water! Thank you to these amazing individuals for offering up a few hours of their time on Mandela Day by choosing to give back to SANCCOB's seabirds and endangered African Penguins. #MandelaDay #madelaDay2024 #67minutes #sanccob

SANCCOB remains on stand-by as work continues on grounded Panama-flagged cargo ship, MV Ultra Galaxy! Recent calm weather has been a welcome respite for the salvage operations of the grounded vessel on the West Coast. At SANCCOB, we're closely monitoring the situation to ensure minimal impact on marine wildlife. ’These incidents highlight the importance of preparedness; during peace time, we ensure our team and resources are “response ready” in the event of a pollution incident.” - Nicky Stander, Head of Conservation SANCCOB Stay informed and support our efforts at https://buff.ly/2NoR0SF Image by: South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) #MarineConservation #EnvironmentalProtection #AfricanPenguins #SANCCOB

Help Us Build a Future for Penguins! After months of fundraising, SANCCOB still has a shortfall to cover the expansion of our Chick Rearing Unit (CRU) in Cape Town. This facility is crucial for artificially incubating and hatching wild-origin African penguin eggs and hand-rearing penguin chicks, helping to bolster the declining wild population. Your support could make all the difference! Donate now: https://buff.ly/3Vs8BgK and select 'Chick Rearing Unit Expansion' and be a part of conservation history. #SANCCOB #ChickRearingUnit #SaveTheAfricanPenguin #Conservation #WildlifeProtection #endangeredspecies #Africanpenguin

Join the Fight to Save African Penguins! 🐧❤️ SANCCOB is the only organisation in the world that successfully incubates and hand-rears wild-origin African penguin eggs and chicks. We have a goal to raise R250,000 to increase the our new Chick Rearing Unit in Cape Town that has become too small to accommodate the hundreds of eggs we admit annually. Together, we can help restore the African penguin population. Every donation counts, make yours today at https://buff.ly/3Vs8BgK and select ‘Chick Rearing Unit Expansion’. #SANCCOB #ChickRearingUnit #SaveTheAfricanPenguin #Conservation #WildlifeProtection #EndangeredSpecies #AfricanPenguin

A first for South Africa, a landmark litigation is holding the South African government accountable for failing to implement adequate measures to protect an endangered species. In March this year SANCCOB and BirdLife South Africa took legal action against the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment to secure adequate food resources for African penguins. The court hearing date has been set. “It is extremely encouraging to have a confirmed court hearing date. We’re placing our confidence in the legal system to review the processes to date and the Minister’s 4 August 2023 decision. The penguins are running out of time, and this court hearing is a critical point for the African penguin’s future” says Nicky Stander, Head of Conservation at SANCCOB.
