Meer was one of the most prominent leaders in the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa, a distinguished academic, a prolific writer, and a tireless advocate for social justice and human rights. She was a close friend and confidante of Nelson Mandela and authored his biography, Higher Than Hope: The Authorized Biography of Nelson Mandela. Nobel Prize laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah will deliver this year’s Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture. Here, he shares his profound sense of honour at being asked to speak in memory of #NelsonMandela, a global icon of justice and humanity. The lecture will be held at the University of the Witwatersrand’s Linder Auditorium on 28 September. The Women’s March on 9 August 1956 was a pivotal event in South African history. Thousands of women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the pass laws that restricted the movement of black South Africans. Today, on #WomensDay, we thank all those brave women, including Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, Sophia Williams-De Bruyn and Amina Cachalia, to mention a few, on whose shoulders we stand as we celebrate #30YearsOfDemocracy in South Africa this year. #NelsonMandelaFoundation #WomenInHistory

Author and Nobel Prize laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah is the speaker for the 22nd Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture. Gurnah, a Tanzania-born British novelist and academic, joins an esteemed list of speakers, including Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai; Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley; former International Criminal Court prosecutor Dr Fatou Bensouda; United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres; former Chief Justice of South Africa Mogoeng Mogoeng; and former US President Barack Obama. The lecture will be held on at 3pm on 28 September 2024, at the University of the Witwatersrand’s Linder Auditorium.
