Deep Learning IndabaX South Africa

Last week, I attended the 7th annual Deep Learning Indaba𝕏 South Africa 2024, hosted at the University of the Witwatersrand. It was a privilege to once again serve as part of the organising team and be part of growing the Indaba𝕏 community. It was truly a privilege to work alongside such a talented and dedicated team. One of the most gratifying aspects was the opportunity to engage with experts and peers in the field. I participated in some of the workshops including: ” Leveraging RAG to Improve LLM Generation" presented in collaboration with Discovery Limited and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The workshop on "AI for Health in Africa" workshop, organized by Sisonke Biotik & @DSI_Africa which were all very relevant to my area of research. Among the many great speakers I had an opportunity to attend some several Keynotes including Lelapa AI’s very own Pelonomi Moiloa speaking on Language technology for Africa and Prof. Mpho Primus founder of Primus Technology Hub speaking on NLP for Africa: Trends and perspectives, exploring the intersection of linguistics, computer science and AI technologies and the potential for the African continent. A very big thanks to all the speakers for share their knowledge and insights to their field. Thank you to all the sponsors and partners for the continued support. Last week, I attend the Deep Learning IndabaX South Africa hosted by the University of the Witwatersrand. This week-long event featured numerous talks and workshops on AI and ML advancements in various industries. What a fantastic event to delve into the field of deep learning and network with others.

Last week, from the 9th to the 12th, I was privileged to attend the Deep Learning IndabaX South Africa at the University of the Witwatersrand. Not only was I an attendee, but I have also been part of the organizing team since the beginning of this year. It was incredibly rewarding to see our efforts as the organizing team come to fruition. The attendees were happy, and it was a job well done for us. It was wonderful to put faces to the voices I have been meeting online weekly, the list is endless but Lydia de Lange Emily-Rose Steyn Lesego Makhafola Elizabeth Rakgotho-Booi (Pr.Nat.Sci) Philipa Murindagomo francis agamah Natalie Alexander Anna Bosman Ruan de Kock Thembelihle Dlamini Joel Leonard my leader Leo Hyams. I made new friends and exchanged great ideas and information. I wanted to meet so many people like Dr Christopher Brian Currin, Vukosi Marivate but I met Refiloe Shabe saw Benjamin Rosman from a distance The program was packed with speakers from the industry, academia, and tech communities. Among the many great speakers, Terence Van Zyl's talk on Representation Learning (considering doing graduate studies on this) and Charl van Heerden's talk on speech recognition in Africa stood out. Charl's demo was particularly awesome, or maybe it’s because I was chairing the NLP sessions – who knows! Pelonomi Moiloa's keynote 🥳, also Jabu Mtsweni' s keynote on cybersecurity and AI ✌ . How can I forget my community's workshop SisonkeBiotik, AI for Health in Africa. In short, it was an amazing 4 day program conference! Attending the main conference in Senegal? Yes, no, maybe? Reflecting on the Deep Learning IndabaX South Africa conference that took place last week at the University of the Witwatersrand, I feel truly honored to have had the opportunity to volunteer at this remarkable event. This experience was profoundly enriching, allowing me to engage with like-minded individuals who are deeply involved in AI and machine learning and share a common passion for developing innovative solutions for Africa. Last week, I attended the Deep Learning IndabaX South Africa 2024, hosted at the University of the Witwatersrand. I was privileged to be part of this year's organising team and together, with a fair bit of hard work over the last few months, we pulled off an awesome event! Cheers to the Deep Learning IndabaX South Africa - the conference of the year! 🥂 What a week it was! From the amazing speakers Henrica Kadira, Frans Meyer and Joel Leonard to name a few - you all blew my mind! To the hands-on workshops courtesy of the wonderful folks at Alphawave Group and WeThinkCode these event had it all. It was an honour for my colleague and I clinching 3rd place in the Entrepreneurship awards - we're coming for that top spot next time! 🏆🥉 And let's not forget the hackathons! A big shout-out to my team Emmanuel Owusu Ahenkan, Thembelihle Dlamini, Samuel Oladejo, Yeshalen Naicker, Dan masethe, Qiulin Li and Ketro Sithole for organising 4 successful hackathons ! Deep Learning IndabaX 2024 🧠🤖 Just got back from the Deep Learning IndabaX 2024 at the University of the Witwatersrand! The Deep Learning Indaba𝕏 focuses on ensuring that knowledge and capacity in the latest and greatest developments in machine learning are spread more widely across the African continent. 🌍🤝 The event was incredible, with over 400 attendees and 50 speakers, multiple hands-on tutorials and hackathons. Some highlights included keynotes on the latest research and applications of deep learning and reinforcement learning. 🖥️💡 Networking with researchers and practitioners from across Africa was invaluable. Last week, I had the pleasure of presenting and attending Deep Learning IndabaX South Africa conference as a representative of IBM Research Africa. I had the opportunity to present research on Topological Data Analysis for phenotype prediction and biomarker discovery, which sparked significant interest and engaging discussions. I am also excited to announce that this work will be open-sourced soon. The conference assembled an impressive mix of students, researchers, and industry professionals, all brought together by their passion for artificial intelligence and machine learning, offering an inspiring showcase of diverse expertise and insights. Additionally, I had the exciting opportunity to see the Boston Dynamics robot dog in action.
