In honour of #MandelaDay, our teams were out across KwaZulu-Natal, spreading cheer and leaving a legacy in the communities that surround our operations. Our head office team spent their 67 minutes and more at Siphosethu Primary School in Mount Edgecombe, Durban, where they cleaned and painted the kitchen and sick room, donated a bed, fridge, microwave and fans to the school, and set out to put a smile on the faces of learners. #MandelaDay2024 #ISSAHeadOffice #community #issa

It was all hands on deck at our Noodsberg Mill for #MandelaDay2024 as the teams donned their safety gear and went in force to make a difference at the Efaye Primary School. With spades in hand, they toiled the soil for seedlings, painted a new jungle gym, repaired classrooms and installed brand new fencing to keep the learners safe. And, to top it off, they secured a Jojo water tank donation for the school, ensuring that the Mandela Day magic will be felt beyond 67 minutes. Our Eston Mill team celebrated #MandelaDay2024 with the learners at Fairleigh Primary School, using their 67 minutes, and more, by undertaking a range of activities at the school. The team sourced and then planted seedlings for a garden that will bloom and provide some nutrition for years to come. The team also prepared food for the learners, and distributed snack packs to enjoy. Well done to our Eston team! #MandelaDay2024 #EstonMill #community #issa

When the team at Sezela Mill sat down to consider their #MandelaDay2024 project, they wanted to work on a project that would have a lasting legacy, beyond 67 minutes. Just down the road from the mill, the Sezela Primary School, a no-fee school that’s home to approximately 620 learners and a dedicated and passionate group of teachers, were in need of a revamped playground and flood mitigation measures after it had been severely impacted by the April 2022 floods. The school has a history steeped in the province’s sugar farming industry, and dates back to the 1940s built with bricks laid by parents who worked at the mill, for their children’s education. Sezela Mill GM @Leon Haggie, Estate Support Manager @Alson Khumalo together with their teams, and local Mill suppliers rolled their sleeves up and worked for two weeks on the project. They levelled the water-logged playground, built retainer walls, planted seed grass that was taken from ISSA’s sites, rebuilt steps, added in handrails, created speed humps at the gate entrance, created a stormwater drainage system, created a new access path to the school, and installed a jungle gym – a first in the school’s history. School principal @Reshma Brijraj said they were overwhelmed by the support and excited at continuing to give learners the best holistic schooling experience with proper sports facilities. Honouring #MandelaDay2024 was a success for the Illovo Syrup plant in Illovo, south Durban. The team took on a major project of installing a borehole at the Inkwali Creche, near the plant. This access to the precious resource will have a lasting impact on the creche and its commitment to providing a conducive environment for taking care of the little ones. The ISSA Syrup plant team also painted the creche, leaving it with a beautiful new coat of green paint. The day ended with the children being treated to hotdog rolls and Illovo syrup and waffles!
