Despite the challenges posed by ongoing conflict in eastern Congo, Virunga National Park's community trackers remain dedicated to monitoring its gorilla populations. This year alone, 10 mountain gorillas births have been registered. “The brave work of Virunga’s community trackers is critical to protecting the mountain gorilla population in the midst of the current conflict and multiple threats, and to prevent a reversal in the steady growth of the population that we have witnessed in recent years.” Jacques Katutu, Head of Gorilla Monitoring. The team of 110 community trackers, supported by the European Commission, USAID, the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, and our global community of online donors, is now set to initiate a comprehensive welfare assessment of the mountain gorilla population. We’ve just hosted a group of dentists from all over the globe (and the smiles were off the charts!). Picture this; sleeping on a train perched on a bridge overlooking the Sabie River—talk about a room with a view. Our surprise bush dinner with wine and wildlife was a night to remember. But the adventure didn't end there. In Cape Town we had a special dinner in the cellar at High Constantia wine farm.
