Did you know that meat and animal products contribute more to emissions than other food types? 🥩 Meanwhile, cereals and pulses, 🫘which are critical staples, account for a large portion of emissions from waste management. Globally about one-third of all food produced is lost or wasted annually. In South Africa, more than 10 million tons of good food that is made, is never eaten. Rather, due to various supply chain dynamics, this good food is dumped in landfills, where it decomposes and produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. One of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) is to halve global food waste and reduce losses in production and supply by 2030 (#SDG12). At FoodForward SA, we're tackling this issue by working with supply chain actors to timeously intercept surplus food 🥔 🥕 that would otherwise be wasted and redirect it to communities that need it. We distribute this perfectly edible and safe food to our network of 2,500 vetted beneficiary organisations, reaching nearly one million vulnerable people across the country. This not only prevents food waste but also helps mitigate against climate change. In the 2023/2024 financial year alone, we saved 113,152 tons of greenhouse gas emissions by recovering and redistributing surplus food. “One set of green fingers can transform a garden, but many green hands working together can change the world.” – Keith Kirsten (Horticulturist/Landscape Designer). In April, FoodForward SA launched Food Gardens Connect, a project aimed at empowering unemployed people, especially young people, through gardening skills that can generate income. 💰 It all started with Kwakhanya Greening and Home-Based Care BO in Khayelitsha, and has since expanded to nine other partner organisations in under-served communities. The distinguishing factor about Food Gardens Connect is that we grow our own seedlings, donate this the various communities we partner with, and offer a guaranteed buy-back of the produce they wish to sell. Working closely with Soil for Life and our in-house gardening expert, Likopo Sehlabo, we have conducted weekly training sessions to equip people to grow their own food, sustain their gardens and reap the rewards of their efforts. Participants range from seasoned gardeners to unemployed youth, all of whom will receive ongoing training, support, and monitoring until August 2024. At FoodForward SA, we're always excited to collaborate with our member beneficiary organisations (BOs). Beth Uriel, one of our BOs based in Cape Town, is dedicated to providing opportunities for vulnerable young men from impoverished communities. With a mission to "raise young men to look up to," Beth Uriel is a facility that offers support and life skills training to men aged 18-24. One of their programmes includes barista training where young men who dropped out of school due to various circumstances have the opportunity to make a career out of coffee-making. ☕ Their coffee shop, Mekasi Kafe, is managed by the boys themselves and the profits go to the running and upkeep of the home. During our Cape Town #MandelaDay food-packing event, they played a crucial role in serving our enthusiastic volunteers with hot brews in the cold and wet weather. 🌧️ Every penny from sales went directly to Beth Uriel, empowering these young men to earn an income. In 2016, FoodForward SA launched its proprietary digital platform called FoodShare. 📱 This tech solution has revolutionised our model, by introducing Virtual FoodBanking (VFB) – making digital connections between participating retail stores and beneficiary organisations within our network for the regular collection of surplus food, including remote towns and villages. FoodShare allows us to intercept, recover, and redistribute good quality surplus food timeously and efficiently. This technology not only allows us to scale across South Africa, but also provides a B2B solution to our retail partners – Woolworths, Pick n Pay, Food Lover's Market Holdings, and SPAR South Africa, by significantly reducing their food waste and its associated costs. Following the heavy rainfall in Cape Town which left many homes flooded, forcing people to seek temporary accommodation, FoodForward SA has stepped up to provide warm, nutritious meals to more than 100 displaced people in Brown's Farm, Philippi.🍛🍲🥘 We've been working closely with our beneficiary organisations in the area to ensure these families receive daily meals as they rebuild their lives and homes.
