Kamira Nait Sid is a strong advocate of the Amazigh language, culture and identity in Algeria. She had been a victim of harassment before being abducted on August 24, 2021 by unidentified men. It was only after several days when family and colleagues learned she was in police custody. Accused of belonging to a separatist movement, she continues to rot in jail for having raised women and indigenous peoples’ rights issues. Like her, many more human rights defenders are behind bars for speaking truth to power. Former Members of Parliament Bacede Mabuza and Mthandeni Dube were arrested on the evening of July 25, 2021, amid a wave of protests demanding political reforms in Eswatini. Earlier last week they were sentenced to prison terms of 25 and 18 years respectively. As we mark #NelsonMandelaDay and #StandAsMyWitness campaign anniversary, the number of countries abusing laws to harass and put activists behind bars has nearly doubled in five years. At least 66 countries prosecuted activists last year, up from 36 in 2019, according to the #CIVICUSMonitor. In 2023, at least 63 countries detained human rights defenders (HRDs), up from 38 five years ago.
