Making Progress Possible. Together.
About us
Cape Town, or the Mother City, is South Africa’s oldest city, its second-most populous and the legislative capital. It is made up of a diverse population, a rich history, world-famous tourist attractions and an exciting calendar of international and local events. More than 231 councillors and 26 225 staff serve 4 million residents across a sprawling and cosmopolitan metro of 2 500 square kilometres. The City provides all the services normally associated with a full-service municipality, such as water, electricity, waste removal, sanitation, new infrastructure, roads, public spaces, facilities, housing developments, the upgrade of informal settlements and existing infrastructure, clinics and more. To meet the current and future needs of its residents, the City of Cape Town has formulated strategies and policies to guide development and growth. Central to these is the Integrated Development Plan (IDP), which is a five-year plan that informs the City’s policy and budget decisions. The City’s strong sense of community makes it one of the best places to live, work and raise a family. We offer rewarding career opportunities, great benefits and competitive salaries. New opportunities are posted at www.capetown.gov.za/careers.

Have Your Say in Reviewing the City’s Spatial Plans The City’s eight District Spatial Development Frameworks and Environment Management Frameworks are important because they provide a policy framework for development to happen in a planned and organised way. They provide a framework for achieving liveable neighbourhoods, thriving business areas and environmental protection. The City is starting a 5-year review of the 2023 District Spatial Development and Environmental Management Frameworks and your insights are valued. Cool new tools for Scientific Services Scientific Services boasts a team of highly qualified scientists, equipped with the knowledge and skills to monitor and assess water and wastewater quality across Cape Town. And thanks to a R13 million investment in cutting-edge laboratory equipment, they can now detect even the tiniest drop of unwanted chemicals or pollutants in the Mother City’s potable and other water. The new R7 million liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometer (LC-MS-MS) can detect even extremely low levels of toxins in waterbodies such as dams, rivers and vleis. These toxins are often caused by algal blooms. The spectrometer can also identify very small concentrations of harmful chemicals, including those used in medication, personal care products and industrial processes. Alongside it, a R6 million gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometer (GCxGC-TOFMS) is being used for the analysis of chemicals in the various water matrices. It comes with an automated robotic sampler, which is capable of preparing samples prior to analysis. Both instruments can detect the minutest amount of chemical compound: A single drop of toxin in a body of water equal to 20 Olympic swimming pools will not go undetected. The City is also in the process of upgrading its laboratory information management system to enable Scientific Services to timeously capture analytical results and seamlessly report these to other departments. #CTStaff #MondayMotivation
