Just wrapped up an inspiring visit to BSF Breeding in Epping, accompanied by the City of Cape Town's strategic business partner in the green economy, GreenCape. GreenCape has played a vital role in expanding this sector and creating more opportunities for Capetonians. BSF Breeding supplies high-quality live neonates (baby larvae) locally and internationally to Black Soldier Fly farmers for the production of insect protein products. The company is undergoing an impressive expansion, set to triple its size from 15 staff to 60 over the next year. Their commitment to excellence is evident in their high-quality genetics. In a recent study comparing 10 BSF strains, their strain was among the top three performers on each tested substrate. The global insect protein market is on a significant growth trajectory, projected to reach $856.08 million by 2029 from $189.32 million in 2022. GreenCape research indicates that BSF farming alone could convert 275,000 tonnes of Cape Town's food-related waste annually into products worth between R500 million and R2.2 billion, supporting around 500 direct jobs. #ThisIsCapeTown #ChooseCapeTown #GreenEconomy

By the end of 2023 over 160 projects had completed or were going through the CFA process. In January and February 2024 alone approximately 50 new projects will start their CFA journey. We LOVE hearing about the successes of CFA projects once they complete the programme. BSF Breeding were part of our first cohort of #CFASouthAfrica projects and since then they have continued to expand their business. This case study highlights how being part of the CFA has contributed to their success. 2023 saw them shipping #blacksoldierfly neonates around the world, working to increase production in their Cape Town facility, bring on board two additional facilities in the North West Province and Guateng Province and increase egg yield at their Cape Town facility by 50%.
