According to a recent Reuters report, Amazon is planning a significant upgrade to its voice assistant, incorporating generative AI technology to help Alexa better compete with advanced chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. This upgraded version of Alexa will reportedly cost $5 or $10 extra per month on top of the company's $139 yearly Amazon Prime membership.

In a competitive landscape dominated by tech giants like Apple, Microsoft, and Google, Amazon's announcement of a subscription-based, AI-enabled Alexa will likely spark interest among tech analysts and consumers alike.

With recently unveiled Apple Intelligence upgrades pending a fall beta release in iOS 18, Microsoft infusing its products with Copilot, and Google planning to integrate Gemini across Android and its other offerings, all of which are free to existing customers, Amazon must demonstrate substantial added value to justify a paid Alexa subscription.
