    Italy’s Pinot Grigio Paradise

Friuli is arguably the world’s best spot for Pinot Grigio, and Attems, a long-respected local producer, is known for putting out some of the region’s finest bottles.

The Attems estate is owned by the revered Frescobaldi family of Tuscany, which produces the legendary Masseto and Ornellaia. The Frescobaldis chose the historic Attems estate for their only venture outside of Tuscany, and when they did, they joined forces with a producer whose roots in their home region run spectacularly deep.

Friuli’s vines, especially on the Attems estate, are nourished by distinctive microclimates and a rare blend of Eocene marl and sandstone soils. Day in and day out, the vineyards are showered with refracted sunlight off the Adriatic, caressed by chilly northern winds coming off the Alps, and protected by surrounding woods.

The land belonging to Attems has been cherished in Friuli since 1106. It’s special, and the stunning wines produced there owe much of their nuance and identity to the area’s surrounding biodiversity, which the winery works hard to protect. This strip of paradise brings forth Pinot Grigios that set the standard—and the 2022 Attems Pinot Grigio more than lives up to it.

This is a wine of elegance. Overflowing with tropical aromas, it delivers fresh stone-fruit on the creamy palate, finishing invigorating and bright. A gorgeous example of the heights Pinot Grigio can reach, it shows why Friuli is one of the world’s inimitable white-wine regions.
