Wikidata talk:Events
So many languages?
[edit]I am pretty glad about multilingualism but why so many languages for the same thing? Wouldn't it better to make one page with automatically translated introduction and language-independent list of events? --KuboF (talk) 17:00, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
$archive
[edit]Hi, it seems that the link $archive (in the latest message) does not work as expected. Indeed, in other languages than English, the link points to "Wikidata:Events/lang/archive" (for example Wikidata:Events/fr/archive in French). I guess the correct path should be "Wikidata:Event/archive/lang". Lea, is it a known issue? Pamputt (talk) 16:14, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
- Fixed. It was caused by using relative links. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 18:39, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
- I'm sorry for that, I first tried to make the page translatable, then went back to the previous version, forgetting to change some things in the process. I'm still not very familiar with the translate tools :) Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 08:38, 6 September 2016 (UTC)
Why not eat our own dogfood?
[edit]Events can be a list of items. Why not use our own to promote what we do? It makes translation of labels more obvious as well! Thanks, GerardM (talk) 06:19, 6 September 2016 (UTC)
- Hello @GerardM: I don't think so. Events are meta/community material, that don't belong to the content of Wikidata. By the way, the information will change regularly so we need the most simple way to keep it up to date. But we can make links to items on the places for example. Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 08:38, 6 September 2016 (UTC)
- Meta is now linked to Wikidata. So I do not understand your point. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 09:18, 6 September 2016 (UTC)
- I don't either (Wikidata talk:IRL). Wikidata is useful for information that changes regularly and is simple to keep up to date. At least, for users who started contributing.

- Hello @Lea Lacroix (WMDE): you state that meta and community material does not have a place in Wikidata. When they are significant on their own they should be could be. They are certainly as relevant as / more relevant than Q19393142, it is the street that is significant to me.. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 06:29, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for your advices. I have no problem with using items. This is a community page that should be keep up to date by the volunteers, if you want to add your next events as a list of items, feel free to do so :) Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 08:49, 12 September 2016 (UTC)

Switch this page to Wikimedia Space calendar
[edit]Hello all,
I'm thinking about changing the structure of this page and moving the upcoming events to the calendar of Wikimedia Space. With the Wikidata tag, we could easily enter and find events happening around Wikidata.
Here's a summary of my thoughts so far:
- The issues
- the current Wikidata:Events page is hard to maintain (adding new events, maintain translations)
- the current page doesn't look appealing and it's hard to find upcoming events
- the current page needs manual archiving of past events
- wikitext is not optimal to store and display events
- Advantages of Wikimedia Space
- more and more community members add their events there: it aims to be a centralized place for the Wikimedia movement (the Wikidata workshops in Paris are already there!)
- a real calendar structure that is modelled to include: location, date, repeating events, list of participants, feature to add an event to one's external calendar, etc.
- a better display on a calendar page or a list
- possibility to add tags (eg: Wikidata, GLAM, remote-friendly, etc.)
- events could still link to a wikipage with more info if needed
- Open questions
- is it possible to include a calendar/specific tag from the Space calendar on a wikipage? If not, how keep something meaningful on the Wikidata:Events page?
- do people need to create a specific account? => no, it works with OAuth, people can just log in with their usual Wikimedia account
Do you have any other thoughts or questions?
I think I will start slowly by cleaning up the existing page, archiving 2019, and then creating a few of the events that I "own" in the Space calendar, try to display them on the wikipage. If it works well, we can have a smooth transition where all events owners will be encouraged to advertise them on Space.
Pinging some people involved in events: @Sebastian Wallroth, Harmonia Amanda, Envlh, Jean-Frédéric, Criscod, Constanza Verón (WMAR):
Thanks in advance for your feedback! Cheers, Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 13:58, 16 December 2019 (UTC)
- Your presentation seems good to me, so I've no objections about moving. --Harmonia Amanda (talk) 15:13, 16 December 2019 (UTC)
- I agree with the issues and moving to Wikimedia Space calendar seems to be an improvement, so it's also fine for me. Thank you. — Envlh (talk) 17:41, 16 December 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for your feedback!
- Update: I started updating the page, adding some events to Space. Still needs to be done: archive the old stuff to the /Archive page, then fix/update the translation tags.
- One thing that is bothering me is that the events appearing when listing events Wikidata tag are not ordered by date of the event.
- I also added the link to the page on Scholia that is nicely displaying events that have a Wikidata item - however, for the record, I don't think that having all events (including meetups, small workshops, etc.) in Wikidata would be a good practice, both because of notability criteria and because Wikibase is not a calendar tool. Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 13:26, 7 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Lea Lacroix (WMDE): I disagree with moving things to the WMF's "Space". That site is not under community control, and appears to be some kind of takeover attempt. I certainly would not visit such a site. --Yair rand (talk) 17:01, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
- To be clear, I don't want to force anyone to move things to Space. Event descriptions are still very welcome on wikipages. However, to increase the visibility of events (for example by allowing to browse them quickly and add them to the weekly newsletter), the event organizers could create an entry on Space, with a short description, linking to the full page. If you have a better idea to structure a wiki page in order to easily see, add and update Wikidata-related events, feel free to make suggestions. Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 08:21, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
- 1 to this suggestion. Reaching out to people via different pages/channels is very useful for getting the attention of more people (that be newcomers or experienced community members). Cristina Sarasua (talk) 10:16, 10 January 2020 (UTC)

Update: on 18.2.20 WMF announced that Discuss Space (including the calendar feature) will not be maintained anymore and will be closed. Therefore, I will remove the suggestion to add events on Space. Any suggestions on a more efficient way to display Wikidata events are welcome (other than "create items for all events") Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 13:50, 18 February 2020 (UTC)
- I suppose we could create some fancy Lua module that takes a list of events in a standard format and handles the display and some internationalization and archiving and maybe a calendar and such. --Yair rand (talk) 19:57, 18 February 2020 (UTC)
Telegram?
[edit]Why are the office hours held on Telegram? Telegram has a very bad reputation concerning safety etc. E.g. Signal would be much better. If the argument is "not everybody has Signal", then WhatsApp would be the best option. 194.39.218.22 09:10, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
Office hours April 2024
[edit]@Mohammed Abdulai (WMDE): in April there is summer time, i.e. CEST, rather than CET. Which time is wrong, 17:00 UTC or 18:00 CEST? —Tacsipacsi (talk) 10:35, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
- It should be 18:00 CEST (or 16:00 UTC). Daylight savings is always confusing :)
- Thanks for spotting it. -Mohammed Abdulai (WMDE) (talk) 14:58, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
Types of events
[edit]The confusion of concepts I have noted while talking at Wikimania has pushed me to write this list that IMHO should be revised and inserted in this page. Based on all pages that I have scrolled so far, currently Wikidata meet-ups could be listed as follow:
- WikidataCon (Q37807168) WikidataCon is the main international conference on the topic;
- Wikidata workshop (Q129166943) Wikidata workshop: events to introduce Wikidata or specific advanced aspects of it, usually maximum 1 day;
- Wikidata XXX Days (Q123588017) Data Days, annual on-line event with a specific theme
- Wikidata Days (Q129020761) Wikidata Days, annual Wikidata meet-up (2-3 days) focused on advocacy tailored to the needs of a specific country or region
- WikiCite conference (Q54856428) WikiCite Conference is the main international conference on the topic of Wikidata and bibliography and bibliometry, it can have local Wikicite satellite conferences as well, currently on hold.
I tried to make a proper items of all of them and connect the platoforms. It's not ideal, but it's better than before, for example we had no item for generic "Wikidata workshop" (but a lot of specific ones in any case). Alexmar983 (talk) 13:29, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
- Based on c:Category:Wikidata workshops we can all agree a Wikidata workshop can also be called a Wikidata training.--Alexmar983 (talk) 21:36, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
