Hofstede de Groot, often abbreviated HdG is an art historical term used in provenance records of famous Dutch Golden Age paintings. It refers to the Dutch art historian Cornelis Hofstede de Groot who took on the painstaking task of updating John Smith's catalogue raisonné of important painters. John Smith was the inventor of the catalogue raisonné, and the term is his French translation of "reasoned catalog". The Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings effort to get every notable painting in Wikidata can be augmented by a subproject to document all paintings recorded by Cornelis Hofstede de Groot and his league of assistants during the years 1907 until his death in 1930. The aim of this subproject is to get an item for every painting documented by him (many are doubles, as he included auction information of paintings that could not be confirmed in his day as being the same, though he often guessed this). Many paintings are lost, but most have survived, though owners have changed several times in the last century. HdG's "reasoned facts" such as dates or inscriptions, price, size, condition and ownership in sales records, as well as his insights into the relationship to other artworks are all fine examples of data that can be input into Wikidata (except for size, which is not possible yet). Since this set of books became very popular as a "stamp of approval", many of the works mentioned are hanging in museums today and have already been uploaded to Commons, making wikidata work significantly easier than for other less well documented groups of paintings.

He began the painstaking work of updating John Smith's catalogue raisonné in 1907 in German, but took on the translator Edward G. Hawke almost immediately to ensure publication in English. Unfortunately, Hofstede de Groot died before the update of all of John Smith's work (or translation of all updated volumes already done) could be completed. The HdG publications were (German date, followed in parentheses by the English date):

Omissions
[edit]The volumes by John Smith that were not updated by Hofstede de Groot were:
- Volume 2 (1830) : Peter Paul Rubens
- Volume 3 (1831) : Anthony van Dyck, David Teniers
- Volume 8 (1837) : Nicolas Poussin, Claude Lorrain, Jean-Baptiste Greuze
For this reason these should probably be done in a separate subproject, as the only thing these painters have in common is the fact they were not from the Northern Netherlands.
