Motivation
[edit]Aliases: residents of topic | human population of topic | demonym for topic
This property would provide a way to link directly from the item for a place to the item for the inhabitants of that place. This is similar to the existing properties demographics of topic (P9241), history of topic (P2184), economy of topic (P8744), and geography of topic (P2633). Discussion
[edit]- Question How do groups corresponding to smaller geographical areas work for this property? Are Bretons (Q309197) or Occitans (Q3573554) a valid target in the case of France? Circeus (talk) 17:51, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Circeus: yes I think so, since for example Bretons (Q309197) corresponds to Brittany (Q327) and/or Brittany (Q12130). I added these as additional examples. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 21:03, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
- Comment Zambians (Q97139606) (and probably the others) still seems to have the problems we discussed on Project Chat some time ago: clean up doesn't seem to have been done. It's unclear what would be the advantage to add countless items for ethnic groups to country items. BTW, I don't see how this is related to the properties for demographics of topic (P9241), history of topic (P2184), economy of topic (P8744), geography of topic (P2633) which all have a single distinct value. --- Jura 21:29, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
- Finally, I found the Project Chat discussion. It was at Wikidata:Project_chat/Archive/2020/11#"Greenlanders"_Q101444758. I don't think any of the feedback given there are was used. Worse, we get more of these items. --- Jura 07:27, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- I also asked UWashPrincipalCataloger to provide a reference for the ethnic group claim added to Zambians (Q97139606) ( User_talk:UWashPrincipalCataloger#Unreferenced_claim ). --- Jura 07:27, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- Further, given that Haligonians (Q104720536) was unused and incorrectly formed, I listed it for deletion. --- Jura 07:27, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose demonym (P1549) seems sufficient to me, not sure what is the added value of linked Lexeme-like items.--Jklamo (talk) 23:15, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
- demonym (P1549) doesn't link to an item. The item can include more properties about the characteristics of the demographic group, such as languages spoken, religion, etc. The item can also be used as the main subject (P921) of works, such as found in [Montrealers' attitudes to mental illness: an opinion survey] (Q71410262), Mercury exposure in Montrealers who eat St. Lawrence River sportfish (Q44994034), and list of Great Montrealers (Q3245403). - @UWashPrincipalCataloger: Maybe you could link to that item using qualifier statement is subject of (P805) Vojtěch Dostál (talk) 13:29, 3 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Vojtěch Dostál: See Brittany (Q12130) and the statement "demonym": is that what you were suggesting? Or am I misunderstanding? UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 17:50, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- yes Vojtěch Dostál (talk) 08:10, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
- OK, thanks. I've withdrawn this proposal. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 00:41, 12 June 2021 (UTC)
