Discussion (plants)
[edit]- Per request by Succu, please comment here on the first proposal only. --- Jura 10:13, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
- Comment Plants could sprout and grow in all hardiness zones depending on their planting conditions, but their ability for the plant to grow, thrive and crop/reproduce would be impacted depending on hardiness zone. I suggest that a new property "recommended sowing or transplanting time" be created, with this "hardiness zone" property reserved for use solely as a qualifier to model when the recommended sowing/planting time is within each hardiness zone. The data type of this "recommended sowing or transplanting time" property should be Item so that either a season (Summer, Autumn, ...) or month (March, April...) item could be used. fabrication method (P2079) would probably need to be another mandatory qualifier with possible values of sowing (Q777671), transplanting (Q356031), etc. Dhx1 (talk) 17:07, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
- I'm mainly interested in mapping information already present in Wikipedia. For roses, what is in the samples above is sometimes given, but I don't think the information you mention is generally given. Obviously, much is still to be done at Wikidata in this field. --- Jura 18:14, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
- Comment @Jura1: I understand now why this property would be needed as a statement, not qualifier. Can I suggest a property label change to "grows in hardiness zone", "recommended for hardiness zone" or similar, to make it clearer what the intent of this property is? Dhx1 (talk) 10:49, 27 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Dhx1: Sounds good, though I'd rather not limit the values to actual zones (even if this is preferred). Maybe we could add these as aliases and expand the description? I tried that above now. --- Jura 12:08, 27 March 2020 (UTC)

Motivation
[edit]Seems to be missing. Could help expand content for gardening.
Maybe the second proposal should be "USDA hardiness zone" only and other properties created when needed, maybe it's sufficient to differentiate by value only.
Please help complete the proposals (Add your motivation for this property here.) --- Jura 11:58, 25 January 2020 (UTC)

Discussion
[edit]- Comment This sound valuable, however it would be good to have more complete proposals - do you have sources for example for this data? Also I think this can be generic, not confined to USDA. ArthurPSmith (talk) 23:31, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
- The above is primarily based on enwiki (notably w:Hardiness_zone, w:Dahlia 'Bishop of Llandaff'), which holds some information and relevant references. --- Jura 10:13, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
- Comment I second the comment above, the property is good, but can be elaborated further prior to criation. Maybe creating items for a few examples, as the new item for "half-hardy" mentioned above, could also help to make the proposal clearer. TiagoLubiana (talk) 18:30, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- I will try to add more samples, but some users don't seem to like that one creates items such as the ones mentioned above before actual use. Don't hesitate to add samples as well. --- Jura 10:13, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Jura: Please split the proposals. They should be discussed separately. Thanks. --Succu (talk) 18:48, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- Ok, I inserted additional headers, but I don't think they should be created independently. I'd rather not have one created, but not the other. --- Jura 10:13, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
- Support hardiness zone proposal for use on items which are geographic regions. Dhx1 (talk) 16:55, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
- If I understand it correctly, zones are extrapolated from a nearby metrological station. So depending on the granularity of items we apply this to, there may be one or several zones. Accordingly, I think this could work for places or regions. --- Jura 18:28, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

- @Jura1, Dhx1, ArthurPSmith, TiagoLubiana, Succu: Done. I didn't add examples, because the allowed values aren't created yet. --Tinker Bell ★ ♥ 04:59, 5 May 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. I will do that. --- Jura 05:27, 5 May 2020 (UTC)
