Description | The quantity of water a material would absorb when immerged. |
---|---|
Represents | material (Q214609) > mechanical property (Q5725005) > water (Q283) absorbtion |
Data type | Quantity |
Template parameter | This proprety request is part of the project of creating an infobox for materials. |
Domain | Physical and mechanical property of some Materials like Nylon. |
Allowed values | Any number. Qualifiers : temperature (P2076) (shall be mandatory), under pressure (P2077), determination method or standard (P459). |
Allowed units | %, ppm |
Example 1 | nylon 6 (Q109454) → 2,7% determination method or standard (P459) → Saturation in water / temperature (P2076) → 23°C / under pressure (P2077) → 1 bar |
Example 2 | nylon 66 (Q7071155) → 8..9% determination method or standard (P459) → Saturation in water / temperature (P2076) → 23°C / under pressure (P2077) → 1 bar |
Example 3 | MISSING |

Planned use | Creating an infobox for materials |
Motivation
This proprety request is part of the project of creating an infobox for materials. The water absorbtion is also a necessary qualifier for mechanical propreties of some polymers like Nylon. Exemple of a PA6 datasheet.
Discussion
- Comment On some datasheet moisture absorbtion is used as a header for all cases. In others, moisture absorbtion refer to 24H or equilibrium at 50% RH. Water absorbtion is then used for saturation in water. This seems more logical. It could be interesting to have both parameters to display 2 lines on infoboxes. However the risk is that people get confused and use the one instead of the other. -- Thibdx (talk) 12:20, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

- Question Could you provide a more detailed info about the difference moisture absorbtion/water absorbtion in relation to material science and this property? Maybe it is possible to add specific constraints to this property to prevent confusion? Also, does this parameter always refer to time=24 h or relative humidity=50%? If no, maybe duration (P2047) and not yet created 'relative humidity' property would be of some use? Wostr (talk) 00:20, 23 July 2018 (UTC)
- Hi.
- Moisture absorbtion would generally refers to a part absorbing the moisture in the air. Water absorbtion would generally refers to a part absorbing water while immerged. But this is absolutly not someting that is carved in stone. Many datasheets refer to the one for the other mindlessly. This is why I'm asking but I'm absolutly not sure that we need the 2. The risk is to lead to confusion.
- You right. We need the qualifiers duration and relative humidity.

- Okay, I still don't get all of it (partly because I've tried to look in some technical datasheets in my native language, but in nearly every one of them, there are different names for this parameter), but I hope I will.
- 1. Are there just three standardized methods for measuring water/moisture absorption? I.e. (i) equilibrium at relative humidity = 50%, (ii) saturation in water (by immersion), (iii) time = 24 h? If so, I think the easiest way is to differentiate it using only determination method or standard (P459) (so, if there are only these 3 methods, please forget my comment about qualifiers for time and relative humidity).
- 2. Does the expected property look like this?

- Or are there any other complications? Wostr (talk) 23:43, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
- You can find this on injection molding Polyamids datasheets. Your idea to call it both moisture or water absorbtion could simplify the topic nicely. In the title or using alias ? -- Thibdx (talk) 10:09, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
- You can name it moisture or water absorption or similar and add two aliases: moisture absorption and water absorption. Then everyone willing to add e.g. moisture absorption will get the right property. Wostr (talk) 19:47, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
- Ok, then I propose to keep Moisture absorbtion as it is the most general case (moisture absorbing materials like Nylon 66 are rarely used underwater. Nylon 12, POM, PBT... are generally used instead) and to close this one. Thibdx (talk) 20:58, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
- About the determination method I only know these 3 but my experience in this field is limited to product design engineering. It is also a very important parameter for other fields like construction, public works, some glues... What is sure is that there is not tons of methods. Thibdx (talk) 21:33, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
