@Wikisaurus: I agree that has characteristic (P1552): field (Q190109) is generic but how would you render a vector space over a field F is a set V together with two operations that satisfy the eight axioms listed below [1]? Ogoorcs (talk) 05:19, 23 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • I suppose has characteristic (P1552) is used on mathematical items for something different from the use above, namely for 1) invariants associated to objects of the class represented by an item, like "determinant" for "square matrix", "dimension" for "finite-dimensional vector space" or "parity" for "permutation"; 2) properties that distinguish a class from its overclasses, like "symmetricity" for "symmetric matrix", "finiteness" for "finite set" or "reflexivity" for "partial order". It's kind of a mess, but adding parts of structure would only increase it.
  • Maybe one could use has part(s) (P527)? Although I somehow feel that a set and two operations are real, concrete, physical parts of a vector space, and a field is not, it is certainly a part of definition. What do you think, is it ok to add it to has part(s) (P527)?
  • I could also propose uses (P2283), although it is completely vague and probably only a temporary crutch, which is used to put somewhere something that has no other place.
