William Ewart Hart grew up in Parramatta and worked as a dentist. His life changed on 18 April 1911 after watching Harry Houdini fly a plane at Rosehill Racecourse. A few months later, Hart negotiated the purchase of a Bristol Boxkite biplane from Mr Joseph J Hammond. Over the next year he made a number of pioneering flights, including a contest he won with American Eugene Stone in June 1912 for flying from Mascot to Parramatta. This photo was probably taken around this time, and may be a composite image. Note the steam locomotive framing the plane. Geoff Barker 2023 (English)
