Europeana Entity class constraint test

[edit]

Right now we have > 160 000 properties set and 99,999% are Europeana Agents i.e. a person, group... I test set a "type constraint" on this property to see what we learn from the next run of the Wikidata:Database_reports/Constraint_violations/P7704 - Salgo60 (talk) 11:24, 28 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Salgo60: I did some work on this: --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 13:23, 8 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Remove Disambiguation entities from Europeana Entities

[edit]

https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Database_reports/Constraint_violations/P7704#Types_statistics shows the following classes that must NOT be used. Please remove such instances from Europeana Entities.

I cannot post this as an issue to https://europeana.atlassian.net/browse/EA, so I made https://europeana.atlassian.net/browse/PRO-60: allow posting issues to more Europeana projects.

What can you do about it, @Hmangas:? --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 09:24, 19 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

validation regex

[edit]

I tightened the validation regex to this below. @Salgo60: do you agree? --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 12:59, 8 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

   ^(place|agent|concept|organisation)/base/[1-9]\d $
@Vladimir Alexiev: I guess you are right I hope we will see the Europeana Entity approach to develop and also contain support for describing depicts of a picture... and add many more things than place/agent/concept/organisation. Maybe the best way forward for Europeana is to reuse the Wikidata ontology.... at least as a start like the SDC project has done - Salgo60 (talk) 13:09, 8 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like we have linkrot to Europeana

[edit]

Horcrux found that on José Nieto (Q745789) the link agent/base/51727 does not work see his change. Anyone who knows how to report this to Europeana? I create a Phabricator Task T247719 to track this on my side and I will also update here what we learn and what change stream the Europeana people has etc. - Salgo60 (talk) 23:44, 15 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Horcrux: Update looks like all Europeana agent links are wrong see T247719#5971011, Europeana also reports a web problem on twitter unsure if this is related - Salgo60 (talk) 23:59, 15 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Its back up but feels like Europeana only communicate with tweets .... - Salgo60 (talk) 12:38, 16 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I wrote about their trackers at T247719. Try https://europeana.atlassian.net/browse/EA --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 09:05, 19 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Linkrot

[edit]

There is today no entity management between Europeana and Wikidata e.g. Stephen King (Q39829) was earlier = agent/base/60248 but is now deleted and Europeana has today no easy way that I know how to track changes or subscribe on changes or see changes of agent/base/60248. This problem needs to be communicated and agreed with Europeana and set up a procedures. I guess Wikimedia Sweden is trying to take care of this see T249326 - Salgo60 (talk) 08:19, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Salgo60, Vladimir Alexiev: Any update on this, I have been getting no found errors for quite sometime with this property, it used to work properly earlier. Is this going to be fixed otherwise its better to link it to webarchive and retire the property. Gotitbro (talk) 07:50, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Gotitbro: I have asked Europeana to set up an entity life management see T251225 as I see the same problems... my feeling is that Europeana are very slow moving they started in 2012 with linked data and I have a feeling they have given up see my tweet if not I think Wikidata can add value for Europeana both having more than > 300 000 links and also we have Wikidata that is easy to update / read / use see blog how MET use Wikidata
cc @Abbe98: working with QA at Europeana any advice what we should do... the options I see
  1. stop link Europeana from Wikipedia
  2. get some bot created that check what has died in Europeana and then update/delete Wikidata
  3. get the Europeana people to explain how entity change management is done with Europeana
  4. one option is that Europeana took responsibility of the quality of Europeana entity (P7704) and also updated Wikidata when something is deleted/ created in Europeana
  5. ????
FYI: en:Wikipedia took early a decision not linking Europeana see en:Wikipedia <-> Europeana Entity has problem with the quality of Europeana Linked data
- 08:45, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Salgo60, Gotitbro:. Apart from Salgo's quest to try to get Europeana to manage their entities better, I want to point out that https://data.europeana.eu/agent/base/60248 is not broken. It resolves to https://www.europeana.eu/en/collections/person/60248-stephen-king that shows the person's name, and that Europeana has no CH objects marked with that entity. https://data.europeana.eu/agent/base/60206 is similar: it resolves to https://www.europeana.eu/en/collections/person/60206-pablo-picasso, shows his name, and 72 objects marked with that entity. Europeana has more CH objects related to Picasso https://www.europeana.eu/en/search?view=grid&query="Pablo Picasso" but not all are linked to the entity.

So the links are not broken, however the entity pages are quite useless because they don't show any biographical info, and not all CH objects are linked --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 07:44, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Vladimir Alexiev, Gotitbro: Agree we need to have links to Europeana that has content and also good content... My understanding is we have Europeana in the Authority file for the following languages --> its 2 lines of code that needs to be deleted until we get a statement/understanding of the direction of Europeana.
  1. es:Wikipedia --> 35962 links in I guess template es:Plantilla:Control_de_autoridades
  2. ru:Wikipedia --> 21229 links in I guess template ru:Шаблон:Внешние_ссылки
  3. ca:Wikipedia --> 16091 links in I guess template ca:Plantilla:Autoritat
  4. bg:Wikipedia --> 4 501 links I guess created in bg:Шаблон:Нормативен_контрол
  5. no:Wikipedia --> 11026 links created in no:Mal:Autoritetsdata
  6. ca:Wikipedia --> 16091 links created in I guess ca:Plantilla:Autoritat
  7. el.wikipedia --> 3661 links created in I guess el:Έλεγχος:Παραπομπές από Wikidata
  8. it.wikipedia --> 38261 links they use a config file that just needs to be changed see Configurazione.json
  9. we also have less used dedicated Europeana templates used in sv:Wikipedia, de:Wikipedia, xxx see report jan 2020
If someone is better skilled than me to communicate with Europeana and get a commitment please do. I guess they need to be
  1. aware of Wikipedia readers complains about the quality and we are getting more and more en:linkrot
  2. we would like to have just links with content (objects) not links like Abbie Hoffman (Q306514) --> Europeana agent/base/60466
  3. also the issue with bad quality would be nice to be able to track so we can get en:Wikipedia linking Europeana --> 9.6 B page views in June
Maybe the easiest approach I guess is just to delete the Wikidata values for Europeana entity (P7704)... then at least the Authority links disappear... and then if Europeana gets ready and deliver quality they or we can start populate it again.....
- Salgo60 (talk) 08:35, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Asked for feedback in FB Wikidata GLAM and did a tweet I feel the Europeana network is a good concept but they dont deliver. A lot of museums spend enormous amount of resources on good metadata but Europeana does not deliver is my outside feeling and it feels not that you need to be a rocket scientist fixing this when Wikidata and Wikipedia and Structured Data on Commons deliver a much more complex solution having a very loosely coupled network compared to professional people in Europe's museums. I guess museums must have new skills and start communicating with each other that my artist A is the same as Wikipedia artist B... but that is my unskilled guess - Salgo60 (talk) 09:50, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Eternal garbage

[edit]

Many Europeana links are broken, ambiguous, or useless like this one https://www.europeana.eu/en/collections/person/33720-plasma-(physics) (plasma are not persons, and has nothing to do with culture).

Europeana Entities were "stolen" from other databases, haphazardly linked to heritage objects, and never maintained.

Europeana only talks about quality but does not deliver. I used to be in the Europeana Data Quality Committee but gave up. Instead of a Knowledge Graph of culture, they have more of a hairball --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 02:16, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Feels sad that no one cares I spent some weeks 2019 when this property was created see task graph. I guess we need new type of skills and commitment to get things happening. In Sweden I feel museums are not learning organisations --> the change is very slow - Salgo60 (talk) 10:04, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
