Discussion

generalizing the property to all hashtags

[edit]

most of the referenced hashtags are common to most of the social networks using hashtags, and not only Twitter. Examples with #wikidata:

etc. Could we convert this property to a more general one: "hashtag"? I'm not sure of what should then be the value of hashtag (P2572)'s formatter URL (P1630): maybe we could have a toolforge project linking to a set of pages corresponding to the requested hashtag like geohack is doing for coordinate location (P625)? -- Maxlath (talk) 20:30, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Support hashtags are not platform specific (I suppose it's possible, but that scenario could be handled with a qualifier if it ever arises) --SilentSpike (talk) 22:38, 21 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done: given the absence of opposition here, and the discussions on Instagram, Flickr, and Gfycat property proposals, I proceeded to repurpose this property to a more generalist use-case, and created a small tool to play the role of a hub between the different platform: toolforge:hashtags-hub -- Maxlath (talk) 22:38, 11 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Maxlath: Freat work! Could you please add Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/wikidata/), Tumblr (https://www.tumblr.com/tagged/wikidata) and Deviantart (https://www.deviantart.com/search?q=wikidata) to toolforge:hashtags-hub? --Trade (talk) 16:42, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Trade: done! let me know if there should be more :) -- Maxlath (talk) 18:49, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Maxlath:, YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=#Wikidata, turns out in order to find videos using the hashtag you have to keep the 'search_query=#' part of the url)

@Maxlath: Please add Dtube (Q66362605) (https://d.tube/#!/t/wikidata) to the list. Also i think the '/fr/' part should be removed from https://gfycat.com/fr/gifs/tag/ --Trade (talk) 20:27, 11 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

And change DeviantArt (Q46523) from https://www.deviantart.com/search?q=Wikidata to https://www.deviantart.com/tag/Wikidata --Trade (talk) 20:39, 19 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Your tool should use (for example) https://hashtags.wmflabs.org/?query=1lib1ref for Wikipedia tags. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:07, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Pigsonthewing: added -- Maxlath (talk) 15:09, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Maxlath: Nice work! However, as described in the rejected Flickr tag proposal, I have a particular application (relating to scanned books) for tags that will only exist on Flickr. Is it possible, if we set a qualifier, to somehow get that information to your tool? Jheald (talk) 22:23, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
    • There was no discussion in the above about merging the Flickr tag proposal into this one. That's a really bad idea, because Flickr tags are not hashtags; and they can include characters that do not work in hashtags (example: [1] vs. [2]). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:01, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Jheald: the tool itself could be extended in many ways, but what might be restricting is the url formatter property: I don't think the link generated from the P1630 property could include qualifiers data. Or is there a possible change on the tool itself that could help your usecase and that I don't see? Which qualifier would you like to have? I was thinking of using a property approaching the idea of "specific to" or "particularly true for" or something of this kind, to be able to claim England Delineated (5th edition) (Q52230303)->hashtag (P2572)->"sysnum000033859" with qualifier "particularly true for"->Flickr (Q103204), would that be useful/make sense? -- Maxlath (talk) 23:26, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
      • That would at least allow the information to be recorded, with an indication that the tag was specific to Flickr. It would be nice if the tool could pick up that qualifier, and send the user direct to Flickr rather than presenting them with the multi-platform choice. That might or might not be possible, because it would mean over-riding the simple behaviour of formatter URL (P1630) to somehow pass the qualifier value to the tool as well. I think that there are exisitng properties that get special URL formatting, via a special tool, but I can't remember how this is achieved. Jheald (talk) 10:03, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The link has stopped working @Maxlath:--Trade (talk) 12:57, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Trade: thanks for the notification, that's now fixed. The problem was that all tools were moved to their own subdomain of toolforge.org which required some config update to work. -- Maxlath (talk) 13:38, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

For whoever maintains this: Instagram has changed their URLs for hashtags to https://www.instagram.com/tags/_____/. Trivialist (talk) 18:16, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

They might have revert that change as https://www.instagram.com/tags/wikidata/ presently redirects to https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/wikidata/. -- Maxlath (talk) 16:22, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

"English letters" only

[edit]

there are also hashtags that don't use ASCII. For instance #FreiVonÖl or #ねこ --Loominade (talk) 10:57, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
