Nobody is allowed in the detention room; not even the janitor. I’ve heard the floor is covered in a layer of filth, the chairs are falling apart. It’s where the bad kids go, the ones who talk too much in class. Nobody says what happens in that detention room, but whatever it is, it works. They never speak out of turn afterward.
In my senior year, I was sent to detention for swearing in class one too many times when I thought the instructor couldn’t hear. When I entered and saw the blood spattered on the cracked tile, the slab of concrete in the center of the room with the leather straps, the single flickering light, and the masked teacher with their clothes covered in plastic, curiosity turned to dread.
I never spoke in class again. That way, no one saw the scars where my tongue used to be.
