My name has been forgotten, tossed away like a piece of trash. I do not talk. I do not look anyone in the eyes. My hands shake from my past and I barley sleep at night. I always hear the grunts and the groans of the men that abuse me. I see the insanity in their eyes. They see the fear in mine. I had a chance to escape. I took it but it landed me back in the same position. It seems like I will never escape.

It started out so sweetly in Mirkwood with love and laughter. Thranduil and Legolas are still learning to love and trust each other. Though they have put most of their difficulties behind them, Legolas still struggles to recover from the abuse he suffered with Lord Katar. And whenever the question of punishment arises, he cowers in the fear of physical retribution. And now Lord Katar is back for revenge. His wrath is terrible and his tortures cruel. The hurt Thranduil and Legolas endure during their imprisonment tear apart their souls. Who will save them? And, if they are saved, how will they recover from their experiences? All my life I felt like a misfit. Like I didn't belong. I tried to find a place I could call home, where someone would look at me and for once take me as I was. There is evil inside of me. I have always felt its presence, lurking from the depths of my soul like a shadow following behind its wearer. I tried to fight it, I ignored that part of me and denied it for as long as I could. Like with famine I thought I could starve it just long enough until I could forget it was ever there. I eventually found my home and my saviour in darkness. I found hope in a shadow so black that even the darkest night seemed a bright contrast to it. I was alone so long, I forgot what it meant to mean something to someone. I had been out in the cold so long, I forgot what it felt like to feel another person's warmth. I made many mistakes in my life and as darkness took a hold of me I was ready to make so many more, until one day someone proved to me there was still another way. Until that day all I had ever known was how to bow and try to survive the day. "At your service!" Used to be the only sentence that would keep the monster at bay.

Every Tolkien fan has a "Tenth Walker" in them - but Eleanor Dace hasn't read a word of Tolkien since she was thirteen and was still fantasising about adventuring in other worlds. Now she's twenty-two, a third year English Literature student about to graduate from college; when she discovers that her teenage fantasy just got a bit too realistic for her liking. In the wake of a seemingly End of the World global disaster phenomenon, cynical and upset with everything, Tobias sets out on a journey to find the wood of elves Tolkien wrote about in his series "The Lord of the Rings". I wrote this a couple years ago for this annual contest, which actually is just about to start again august 1st-31st, it's called The Owl Canyon Publishing Contest, you are given a beginning and ending paragraph and you are supposed to write 48 paragraphs in between to connect them, you cannot use dialogue and it HAS to be 48 paragraphs, no more, no less. This was my first time doing it and i had A LOT of fun, I really took those judgers for the contest for a whirl with the 48 paragraphs i wrote. And for the first time ever, YOU CAN TOO! Artemis that's my name. A Long long time ago a young elf prince gave it to me. He was the crowned elf prince of Mirkwood. His name Legolas he was a very kind young elf. I had saved him from drowning when he was only 10, well looked 10 anyway. Since he is an elf they age very slowly just like my kind. After I saved his life that day he wouldd often come see me. Each day just to learn about me and my race. Since we'll, im a mermaid. I'm the last of my kind. He and I grew up together and my feelings for him became one of love over time. I loved him but it was dangerous for me because mermaids can only love once. If my heart breaks it will turn to stone and stop beating, it will grow old and cold and it will stop and never start again. My body will live but it would be a shell of a mer. One day Legolas had come to see me by the river, he told me about a young she-elf named Tauriel. He told me about how he had feelings for her and how amazing she was. My heart hurt at those words. He had fallen for another. That day I told him I loved him and that I would never forget him. Then I grabbed his face with my hands and kissed him. When I kissed him a tear slid down my cheek, when it hit the ground it turned into a white pearl. I kissed him because I loved him but when I kissed him I took away every memory of him and myself. I let go and put my necklace around his neck. It was a green stone with markings on it. We called it our hearts we would give it to the ones we love. I looked at him one last time before jumping back into the water leaving the one I love.
