The world is a poorer, rougher, stranger place: mandatory armed populations; shooting a zombie, more popularly known as a maniac, on the way to work is a part of life; anti-maniac training starting in childhood; and special armed divisions of the government specifically designed for enforcing laws surrounding undead encounters. For Al McDermot and his friends, growing up in this time is even harder, as they discover the virus the world supposedly had a handle on has mutated, unleashing a whole new, more dire and advanced threat. Old worries and conflicts come back to the surface in Al's hometown of Toronto and in the rest of North America, against the backdrop of an entire world in conflict. The best informed and the most talented tacticians survive, while the fate of those who aren't is no longer guaranteed by any cure or vaccine. It's no longer just an outbreak; it's war. Suddenly there was a huge roar. I take a step back covering my ears, my head spins, it is so loud I can't hear myself think. I stand at the mouth of the cave that yawns wide open on the side of a cave. Its big, bigger than a mountain lion bigger than a bear. And I am about to walk into it's cave. But I HAVE to find out what it is. What if there IS a dragon? It will eat me for sure. but I keep going, I just need to make sure it doesn't see me. I walk to this opening as the path split in two edging me across the wall. I will be careful, silent, it will never know I was even here. There is a rocky cliff side and a drop. I look up from my thought and my eyes lock with gleaming golden eyes. I freeze every muscle in my body locks and I can't move. Towering taller than a building stands something I never thought could exist. A dragon. My heart pounded in my ears as my blood ran cold.

First started in 2015, this story is at 50k+ words, but was removed when a plotting hiccup was encountered. I now intend to split it into three parts, and this is the complete Part 1.
