into your arms: witty lowry

feels like i'm always waitin',
i need you to come get me
out of my head and into your arms tonight
———

Max had waken up much sooner then Jean, having panicked over her when she woke up that Hank allowed her to sit by Jeans bedside until she woke up. Charles had come in earlier to try and see what was going on the in redhead  mind but nothing. While Max's head was racing with thoughts.

What had happened? Why wasn't she affected by Jeans power blast? Why were their eyes the same? Why was the voice back? Why couldn't she get rid of this energy pent up inside her? What actually happened on that spaceship? What was wrong with Jean? What was wrong with her?

Max hadn't changed out of her clothes yet and it's had been hours since the party ended. She had one leg crossed over the other, her elbow against the armrests of her chair as her hands held her up. Her black hair fell over her shoulders and her bangs hung slightly over her eyebrows. Dark eyes trained on her friends sleeping face, worried about the both of them.

"Is it supposed to look like this?" Raven asked as they looked around Jeans mind. Pictures of her childhood, flashes of young Jean while grey and red clouds floated around them.

"The mind of a psychic is a fragile thing. It takes only the slightest tap to tip it in the wrong direction." Charles answered solemnly, looking around with the helmet sat on his head, "I had to make adjustments to her mind when she was young."

"What kind of adjustments?" Raven asked softly, feeling like she already knew the answer already.

"Scaffolding. Walls, rather, to keep out all the trauma."

"What did you do to her, Charles?"

"I saved her." He answered, turning his head but not looking at her, "I think whatever happened in space did something to her. In the process, those walls that I erected are being torn down. " The memory of space floated right in front of them, right when the solar flare hit.

"What about Max? Why wasn't she affected by Jeans blast?" Hank asked this time, remembering that she didn't come in for a check up after the space mission.

"There's no telling. It could be due to the fact that her body is able to retain massive amounts of energy or that they were both there when the solar flare hit." Charles explained, going silent for a second as he took a deep breath before explaining, "Max's mind is a...scary thing. The depths of her mind are unknown by me or anyone. She used to have this...voice in her head, unable to control it and making her powers go haywire. Her being can story so much energy that there is no telling what the energy of a solar flare could do to her, them."

"Charles, did you build walls in her mind too?" Raven asked, afraid of the answer.

His silence spoke a thousand words.

Max jumped at Jean's sudden movement, the redheads hand going up to her head. Her breathing started to become heavy, like she was having an anxiety attack. The black haired woman stood up from her chair and placed a hand on her raised arm.

Without even having to go into her mind, she could feel the Professor's presence. Jean's heavy breathing didn't stop. She thrusted a little in her laying position and whispered to no one in the room, "Get out of my head."

Jean groaned and put her arm down only to put her other one to her head. "I heard my father." She hissed out. Max was left render-less, not knowing what she could do to help her and not wanting to tap into her mind while Charles was too. "He's alive."

"You're...you're lying to me." Jeans head moved sharply from side to side as she spoke. Max slowly stood up and started to back away from the bed. The sides of the redheads face were starting to crack with orange energy as Max's eyes turned reddish orange. She placed a hand on the corner of the bed, letting red energy wrapped around her friends body as she tried to stabilize her. "I can sense it."

Jean whimpered as she tried to push Charles out of her mind, not giving up without a fight. She sat up suddenly, her loud voice echoing around the room as she shouted, "Get out of my head!" Her wild red hair floating as her eyes were orange.

Jean looked forward to see Max. Her red eyes and white hair were turning back as the red energy around her waist was dispersing. "What happened? We were outside, and then..." Jean's voice trailed off as she took a closer look at Max's face. Across the bridge of Max's nose was a cut and her nose was starting to bleed.

"You had an accident and you blacked out." Max told her, her own memory of the events kind of hazy and not even realizing her injuries.

"Did I...did I do...do that?" Jean asked softly as she brought her own hand up to her nose, her eyebrows pulled together.

"Just now..but, it's fine." Max said as she moved forward to sit on the bed next to her.

"No, it's not fine."

"It was an accident."

Jean let out a sob as she started to cry, "I don't know what's happening to me. I can't control it. I can't stay here, Max. I really, I need to go." Jean quickly got up off the bed and made her way to the door but Max stood in her way.

"What are you talking about? Where are you going?" Max in front of her and put both hand on her hands, keeping her from leaving before getting a proper answer.

"I need to see...I need to see my father." Jean said in a pleading voice, trying to get past her but Max's was much stronger than her.

The dark haired woman pulled back slightly and looked at her for a second before saying, "Honey, your father's dead. I'm sorry but-"

"He's alive. I can hear him." Jean said gesturing to her head.

"He died in the crash, remember?"

"I'm sorry, Max. I need to go." She tried to leave but Max blocked her again.

"Jean, please."

"God, please let me go."

"Slow down, please. Just listen to me."

Jean stopped and looked at the older woman. Once she had stopped, Max started, "Look, I went through the same thing when I first got here. It's completely normal. Everything will be fine. I promise. When I first got here, I didn't want any friends. I didn't want anyone to get too close and then just leave like everyone else in my life had. But then I met you. You just wouldn't stop." Jean let out a small giggle at that but Max continued,

"And I'm so glad that you fought your way back in because I don't know what I would do without you." Through was so much emotion in her words that Jean's started to tear up again, Max a little too, which was very unusual for her.

"I don't know what I would do without you too." Jean said with a sad chuckle before saying, "And thats why I'm sorry for this."

Before Maxine could stop her, Jean pressed her fingers under her ear and knocked her out silently. Everything going dark once more.
