"Happy Birthday!"

Only years of practise stopped Andrew from jumping as soon as he had opened his bedroom door. He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes to see a set of rather gruesome faces. One was pale with the flesh disfigured and contorted into a rictus grin. The second was a classic monster mask with green skin and large fangs. The third, which was probably the most amusing, was the cliche werewolf mask. Completer with fur and a blood covered muzzle. He stifled a yawn and leant against the door frame with a amused smile. "Alright guys. You can take them off now. I'm not scared", he chuckled.

"Shame", Lucas commented as he pulled off the werewolf mask. Tobias wore the green mask while Even had the corpse one. All of them grinned at each other widely.

"Told you these weren't scary", Even huffed.

"On the next birthday Andrew can choose the masks", Tobias remarked as he gave his mask a disgusted look. "Come on Andrew, we've been waiting hours. Breakfast is getting cold". Andrew stood straighter at the mention of food and followed the three of them downstairs. The kitchen isle had four plates set out with bacon and scrambled eggs. A box of cupcakes sat in the middle.

"What type are the cupcakes this year?" Andrew asked as he sat down. Lucas passed him a mug of tea and he inhaled the scent greedily. After a particular messy incident a few years ago they had forgone the usual idea of a birthday cake and now each of them had a particular pastry for their birthdays. Andrew always liked cupcakes so he got a box of them. Even would have donuts on his birthday. Lucas had ice cream, while Tobias always got a jelly. It worked and they rotated who organised them each year. It was tradition, just like surprising the birthday boy with masks. One of their silly traditions just for the band. A tradition which never failed to make Andrew's heart swell with friendship.

The four of them were a family by themselves. They didn't need anyone else.

"It's chocolate with blackcurrant icing", Even piped up over the rim of his coffee mug. Andrew nodded as he dug into his breakfast. For a while there was only the sounds of clinking cutlery. Then Lucas turned on the radio and the heavy guitar of Don Broco filled the kitchen. Andrew bobbed his head in between bites until the food was gone and his tea was half finished.

He opened the box and they all grabbed a cupcake each. "Happy birthday to you", Tobias began, completely out of tune. Andrew placed his head in his hands as Even and Lucas joined in. The simple song transforming into something wild and more like a operatic seal than the original tune. Andrew was sniggering into his hands, shoulders shaking as it finally ended.

"That was terrible", he announced. "I thought you guys were dying cats". Lucas put a hand to his chest and swept his arm out as he bowed.

"Oi", Even snapped as Lucas' arm hit him in the shoulder. He slapped it away and smiled at Andrew. "Try the cupcake Andrew. I want to hear your review".

"I'll go and get your presents", Tobias volunteered. He stood and disappeared back upstairs. Lucas began filling the dish washer while he was gone. Andrew unwrapped his cupcake and took a bite. The flavours sweet and pleasant.

"Nice", he commented as he chewed. "Definitely a flavour worth repeating".

Even punched a fist in the air in triumph, almost knocking over his coffee mug. He yelped and cradled it protectively. The rest of them laughed.

The rest of the morning was a languid affair spent in the living room. Andrew's favourite show, buzzfeed unsolved- paranormal, was playing quietly on the tv. The sound of dishes clattering in the kitchen as Lucas cleaned up from breakfast. The families all called. Sally calling first and all four of them speaking to her for almost two hours before she had to go. Lisa and Dominic, Tobias and Even's parents, called only for a short moment to wish him a happy birthday. They wished to call longer but didn't have the time but they promised to call again on Sunday. Andrew's dad called but he hung up pretty fast. Andrew tried not to let that get him down.

Once they had finished with the calls, Tobias and Even disappeared upstairs and returned with their arms full of objects covered in brightly coloured wrapping paper. Andrew sat up on the sofa and held his hands out excitedly. There was a whoop as Lucas vaulted over the back of the couch and bounced on the cushions, his face just as excited as Andrew's. "Give him mine first!" He called excitedly. Tobias obediently passed Andrew a big bag full of colourful wrapped gifts.

Lucas pouted and Even smacked him with a cushion as he shifted positions. "He can choose which he wants to open first. Suck it up". Andrew pulled the bag towards his eagerly. Paper soon covering the floor as he and the others explored his new gifts.

Even had gotten him a signed copy of Carry on, much to his delight. (Andrew loved that book). Tobias had brought him a long cotton robe decorated in hand printed designs of butterflies. It was comfortingly soft to the touch and a luxurious deep purple. He had rubbed the cloth against his cheek, pleased at the warmth. Lucas had gotten him new fairy lights for his room. "They have little clips so we can hang stuff on them", he explained. "There's a second part to the present". Andrew pulled out a envelope and opened it up. About ten inked pages fell out. Andrew beamed.

"Lucas! You drew my favourite book characters! They're amazing".

Lucas tugged on his curls sheepishly. Andrew leaned over and ruffled them, joy bursting in his chest. Lucas let him for a minute before batting his hand away. "It took me ages to get them right. Considering I haven't actually read the books, I think they turned out pretty good".

"Nice", Even remarked, peering at the pictures in Andrew's lap. "Isn't that Magnus bane? Oooo, you drew that fairy prince from 'the darkest part of the forest'. That book is so good". He went to peer at them a bit more but Andrew snatched them up. He gently pressed them back into his envelope and added them to the pile of opened gifts next to him.

"Thank you Lucas", he said again. "Your drawings are getting really good". Lucas beamed.

The music was audible from the street as the first few cars pulled up in the drive. Tobias was already opening the door as the first groups approached. Dozens of forks teens and young adults pouring inside. "Drinks in the kitchen!" Tobias called, propping the door open with a doorstop. "Snacks on the picnic table outside! The upstairs and the basement are locked. And the bathroom is on the right". The group ignored him and bustled into the lounge where Even and Andrew had gotten the karaoke set up on the tv.

Just as Tobias had said, the house had been prepared for the party. Since Lucas had determined this party to be London level, they had locked all the doors on the upper floor and the basement. (They definitely did not want random drunks in their private spaces or messing with their music equipment). The glass doors were pushed open and the wooden table outside was covered in bowls of food. Fairy lights lit up the small patio, hanging from the railings of the balcony and the windows. It had taken some coordination and climbing to get them all set up so prettily. Andrew was pretty pleased with them. He was looking forward to having some fun.

Lucas bounced up and went to greet the newcomers, immediately getting into a conversation with a pretty girl that Andrew guessed was the one he had met at Bella's party last month. The other teens were spreading out. Some grabbing drinks, some grabbing snacks. Like Andrew and the band, quite a few people were already buzzed from pre-drinking. But that was good as the mood of the party became addictive rather quickly. More people arriving until the living room and garden were full of teens in varying stages of liberal intoxication.

Andrew soon found himself with a cup of something fizzy and spiked in one hand, the karaoke mic in another. Courtesy call by Thousand Foot Krutch blasting through the twin amps they had moved from the basement. He was bouncing on his toes. Even with the second mic as they duetted. The two of them rather tipsy but still holding a tune. (They had sung together so many times that they could harmonise in their sleep). Around them, the crowd seemed to be trying to dance but were mostly bouncing. As the beat kicked in, Andrew was jumping and closing his eyes to feel the vibrations of the noise in his feet.

"Heyo!" Even practically screamed down the mic. Andrew jolted and his drink dropped to the floor. It was mostly empty so he left it, answering with the next line.

"There comes a danger up in this club! When we get started, we ain't going to stop! We're going to turn it up until gets too hot!" He could feel the energy in the air. The buzz of alcohol making the colours seem brighter and everything just slightly bolder. Andrew felt himself laughing and he and Even bounced together. The younger boy's blonde hair flopping in his face as he grinned.

"Everybody sing Heyo!" They screamed together to the room. The dancers all dancing together in a messy moving form of bodies. It reminded Andrew of when he was in the crowd at concerts, stuck in the sweaty heaving mass of a mosh pit. The adrenaline and music making him feel invincible.

The song died down and he turned and gave Even a high five. The younger boy laughing, face partially obscured by his hair. It was too loud for conversation so Even just patted his hand on Andrew's shoulder. Andrew passed the mic over and picked up his now empty cup. (He was very glad that Tobias had brought paper cups for the night. The prospect of broken glasses not something he wanted to deal with). He shoved his way through the living room and to the kitchen. Behind him, pierce the veil had started up. Lucas running across the room out of the corner of his vision. The other boy taking Andrew's place with Even for the new song. The sight made him giggle.

The kitchen was mostly empty. A couple were making out next to the sink and he pushed them out of the way to fill his cup with water. The two girls barely noticed the shove, continuing to make out against the fridge. Andrew chuckled and drained the cup. He hadn't realised how thirsty he was until the water touched his lips. The cup was empty before he knew it and he was placing on the counter. In the living room, Pierce the veil had faded and voice he didn't recognise were singing some pop ballad. A repetitive song he dimly recognised from the radio.

"Andrew". Tobias greeted as he walked into the kitchen. He grinned widely, hair chaotic and lips red. The neck of his shirt was askew and the top buttons undone, collar crooked. It looked like he had just had a very good make out session, which would explain where he had disappeared too. Andrew smirked, wondering if it had been with a girl or a boy this time. "Look whose here". Behind Tobias was two very welcome faces. Andrew's smirk grew wider.

"Bella! Edward!" He greeted happily. Bella smiled at him weakly. She seemed shallow under the darkness of the setting sun and the harsh contrast of the white kitchen lights. Next to her, Edward stood like a looming shadow. Face as set as marble but as perfect as ever. The both of them had dressed for a party but they stood out against the crowd. Forms too rigid and expressions too tense to be enjoying it. Andrew wanted to laugh.

"I'm glad you guys could make it", he grinned, stepping next to Tobias.

Bella's smile grew a bit wider. "Thanks for inviting us. Happy birthday. How old are you?"

"Nineteen". A moment of silence stretched out after his reply. Bella and Edward seeming unsure of what to say next. Andrew could feel Edward's gaze flitting around. From him, to Tobias, to the room behind them were Even and Lucas were dancing.

"There's drinks and snacks, do you two want anything?" Tobias asked. He was obviously not as drunk as Andrew.

Bella perked up. "I'll just have a soda. Edward ate before he came"-

"His special diet", Andrew grinned cheekily. The bronze haired boy narrowed his eyes slightly as Bella froze.

"Yes", she nodded after a second's pause. "The diet". Maybe Andrew should tell her to work on her acting skills.

They were saved further attempts of awkward conversation by a loud bang by the front door. The noise made the two girls in the kitchen startle. They broke away from their lip locking fest and blinked as they noticed the others in the room. Tobias sniggered as they scurried out. Andrew poked his head into the hall and let out a joyous shout. "Embry! Guys!" He held out his arms and crashed into Embry with a hug. Andrew wrapped his arms round Embry's neck and had the startling realisation that he might have missed Embry more than he thought. (He also might be drunker than he had realised).

Embry let out a Oof as Andrew collided with him, arms coming up automatically to hug him back. "Hi Andrew. Happy birthday!" Andrew grinned and hugged the boy closer for a second before pulling away.

"Jacob. Quill, Leah, Seth", he greeted the others. "It's good to see you".

"Happy birthday", Seth beamed. All the boys were, for once, wearing clothes that were not denim shorts. They had actual T-shirt's on. (Not that anyone would have minded if they came shirtless again). Leah smiled at him and echoed her brother's statement. She was wearing a cute white crop top which showed off her tanned skin. Lucas would think himself blessed.

"Thanks", Andrew laughed. He pulled back to see what Embry was wearing. Black jeans hugged his legs and a pale grey tshirt clung nicely to his shoulders. Andrew grinned wider. In the background, another song started up. Lucas' voice audible as the words to Bang Bang by green day bounced round the house. Leah's head turned subtly to the sound.

"Where's Even and Tobias?" Quill asked. "And happy birthday dude". He patted Andrew on the shoulder.

"Even is dancing, and Tobias is in the kitchen with Bella and Edward". Instantly the group stiffened. Andrew watched with fascination as they all frowned. Leah's lips actually curled back as if to snarl.

"Edward Cullen is here?" Jacob's voice was cold and sharp.

Andrew nodded nonchalantly. "Yeah. He's our neighbour. Might as well invite him and Bella". He had barely finished his sentence before Jacob was shouldering past into the kitchen. Andrew stepped back, Embry's arm coming up to stop him falling. He shrugged it off and followed after Jacob. "What's wrong?" He tried to place concern into his voice but inwardly his mind was jumping up and down. There had to be some explanation for this. If what they thought was right, then they will soon get proof.

"Andrew!" Even burst out of the crowd, blue eyes alight with energy. He paused as he caught sight of them all, eyes widening. "Ohhh", he sounded, realising what was happening. "Ohhh". He grinned, sharing a look with Andrew. "Imma get Lucas". He waved and vanished back into the party crowd.

When Andrew entered the kitchen, it was to see Jacob at Tobias' side. The dark haired boy locked in a icy stare off with Edward. The vampire standing next to the isle with Bella fidgeting anxiously between them. "What's going on?" Andrew asked curiously. Tobias took a swig from his cup, calm between the two glaring boys.

"I don't know", he shrugged.

"What is this leach"- Embry's voice was so low, it was practically a growl. He broke off into a hiss, eyes as fixed on Edward as Jacob was. Andrew blinked at the pure animalistic tone in his voice. He looked around and noticed that Leah and Quill were also glaring. Leah's lips pulled back into a sharp toothed snarl. The only one who wasn't glaring was Seth. The youngest boy was standing with a unreadable expression, watching the room with tense shoulders.

A clatter broke the silence as Lucas and Even stumbled into the room. They stopped and took in the situation with wide eyes. "Wow", Even grinned. "Hello testosterone".

Andrew laughed as a wide cheeky grin filled the blonde's face. "I need a drink. Pass me that bottle Tobias". He held out a hand and Tobias passed him a bottle of baileys. Andrew took a swig and pulled a face at the sweet alcohol. He held it out and Lucas took his own swig, leaning back against the counter with Tobias. Even giggled as he leaned on Andrew's shoulder.

"Fuck. This is almost as good as we had imagined".
