"Well, this meeting is done. Four you can take her home now." Tori instructs him then turns back to what looks like a lot of paperwork.
Which I guess makes sense I mean if you run an entire little city then paperwork is a guarantee.
"Wait that's it I don't get any more words of wisdom or a mask like this guy?"
"Masks are only given to our special team." Four said.
"Oh and I'm not special?"
"Not even close." He scoffs.
"Everything else about our procedures will be given to you on a need-to-know basis." Tori said.
"And how do I get to the need-to-know bases?"
"That depends on how well you do in training."
"Training?"
"Yes, all recruits who will be helping with this mission need combat training," She said, "Now Four will take you home and will come to collect you when your training will start."
"Who will be my trainer?" I ask.
"Me." Four said.
I give Tori a seriously look.
"He is the best we have." She shrugs.
Sighing I tap my fingers against the armrest of my chair.
"Fine, you gonna take me home or what?"
"Well, I don't exactly have a choice now do I."
"No you don't," Tori chuckles," Now seriously get the hell out I have work to do and I have to get back to Dauntless to work on the Eaton case."
Four and I get up and we start making our way out of the building.
As we walk back to the door I was expecting everyone to watch me again. But the streets are quiet. Empty. Peaceful.
"I like the quiet too." Four said, not looking back at me.
"I never said I did."
"I could just tell."
We lapsed back into silence and kept walking. We climb back up the stairs and into the woods shutting the trap door behind us locking the city away from view.
"Holy shit." Four curses, raising his hands just in time to stop a twig from flying into his face.
The wind has severely picked up and combined with the dark we are essentially blind the whole way back. But somehow we manage to get to the outskirts of Abnegation.
"I am sure you can manage the rest of the way." Four said.
"Yeah." I nod.
"Okay, like Tori said I will come and fetch you when your training will start."
"Yeah, when will that be?"
He shrugs.
"It could be tomorrow or the next day or the day after that. Just be prepared for me to suddenly appear." He said while gesturing with his hands.
This action makes a smirk pull on my lips. Didn't expect him to have a humorous side.
"Goodbye Four."
"Bye Stiff."
I roll my eyes and then start running back to my house.
Climbing up pipes while the wind is pushing against you is not fun at all. I nearly slipped and fell three times. But I managed to wiggle my body up there and through my window which I immediately shut after.
It was only when I got under my covers that I realized just how exhausted I am. And as soon as my head hit the soft pillow I fell into a deep sleep.
The image of blue eyes flashed in my mind.
***
The dreadful feeling of my shoulder being shaken is how I am being woken up.
"Beatrice." Susan's concerned voice hums around me bringing me up from my sleep.
My eyes slowly flutter open.
"What time is it?" I ask my voice hoarse.
"Seven," She replied, "Robert and I made breakfast."
My stomach growls loudly at the mention of food.
"I'll be right down."
As soon as she left I jumped out of bed, washed up then made my way to the dining room where my breakfast is waiting.
"Morning Beatrice." Robert smiles at me.
"Morning."
I sit down and like a ravenous wolf I devour my breakfast.
"That was delicious." I said.
Raising my napkin I wipe away the crumbs that gathered on my lips.
"It's Robert's secret recipe." Susan said.
A small blush rushes to Robert's cheeks and he gave her a look that said " Why?".
"Really?" I asked wanting to continue the play.
"It's nothing special just add a little butter to the mixture." He shrugs.
"He is being too modest Robert is an amazing cook. He will make his future bride very happy. Don't you agree Beatrice?" Susan smirks.
Robert looks like he wants to die of embarrassment.
"She will be very lucky to have a great guy like you."
And once again the blush returns to his cheeks.
"We should get going." He said.
We quickly washed the dishes and then set off towards the meeting hall.
"Where do you think we are going today?" Susan asked.
"Hope it's somewhere inside it's kinda chilly." Robert said.
He is right, the wind died down a bit but there is still a cold breeze wafting past.
"Yeah." I said.
Susan ran off to the board. After a few seconds, she came skipping back a large smile pulling on her naturally rosy pink lips.
"So?" Robert and I asked in unison.
"We are working with our dads today."
I've only been to my father's workplace once when I was eleven. And let me tell you I was so bored. I don't know how he does it all day.
Together with our group, we made our way to the building where our council works.
As we neared the building I couldn't help but glimpse at the faint outline of what once was the proud symbol of the Divergents.
Together we huddle in the lobby and wait for Marcus to come. Thankfully we didn't have to wait long before his tall figure appeared before us.
"Goodmorning and welcome. One of the jobs one can acquire if they achieve top positions at the end of their initiation is a spot in the government. As you all know Abnegation was given the role of running the government due to our vow of selflessness. Today you will all see what a day in a leadership position entails. Each of you will stay with a leader for the whole day. You will only observe and ask questions if you have any. Now wait here and your designated leader will come to collect you."
One by one someone was taken by a leader and led off in a different direction.
I was hoping to get my father but he was paired with Susan.
Marcus walks over to me.
"Beatrice you are with me today." He said.
"Great."
Waving goodbye to my friends I follow Marcus to his office which is slightly larger than all the others since he is the main leader.
"On Wednesdays, as I'm sure you know the leaders gather after work for a meeting. The meetings entail how we can improve issues raised by other city council members. Most of today I have to prepare all the agendas and type out the paperwork for the meeting."
"That sounds like a lot of work."
"It certainly is, you can't imagine how exhausted I am at the end of the day. And if you don't believe me just ask Evelyn."
I pull a chair closer to his desk and silently watch as he works on his computer. Suddenly the screen started malfunctioning and went blank.
"Oh, you have got to be kidding me." Marcus growls his fist hitting the desk making me jump slightly.
"What happened?"
"It's just a malfunction I can fix right up."
His fingers nimbly working on the keyboard he starts doing all sorts of things that I defiantly don't know.
"I had no idea you were this academically inclined in computers."
"My father taught me computer skills when I was a boy and in turn, I passed my knowledge onto...... onto my son."
A brief expression of anger flashes on his face but it went away so quickly I thought I imagined it.
The screen lit up again.
"Wow," I gasp," That was incredible."
"Thank you, you know your father always used to rave about what a kind girl you are."
"Really?"
"Oh yes," He chuckles, "I used to think he was over exaggerating but then I saw you trying to make friends with Tobias all those times and I saw he was right."
"Do you ever wonder what happened to your son?" I ask him.
Stupid Beatrice why would you ask that question?
I half expect him not to answer me. To snap at me. Telling me how inconsiderate it was to ask him such a personal question. But he doesn't.
"I think he ran away."
"What makes you think that?" I ask surprised by his answer.
He sighs.
"What I am going to tell you right now is a family secret. You can't tell a single soul. You cant even tell Evelyn I told you."
"I won't tell anybody I promise."
He sighs again then takes a deep breath.
"My son had a lot more troubles than either Evelyn or I wanted to admit. Tobias never wanted any friends he was always upset, constantly tired, and we found a journal where he was writing about how he wanted to kill himself," His voice chokes up as he speaks.
"What was wrong?"
"After we found the journal Evelyn and I took him to a doctor who diagnosed him with depression. He was only thirteen at this point."
Oh my God!
I lean back in my chair. Depression did explain a lot about his behavior over the years.
"He was put on some medication and went to therapy but it wasn't helping. And then on his choosing ceremony day he disappeared. Just like that gone. He didn't leave a note or anything. Every night Evelyn cries because she is worried that he killed himself or is thinking about it again. And even I have to admit that is my worry too."
"Do you guys have any idea as to why he was depressed?"
"I don't know he wasn't one for talking about his feelings. So I think he ran away and I can only hope that one day he will come back and we can all be a family again."
A tear appears in the corner of his eye. I watch as it got larger and then trickled down his cheek.
"Maybe he will and who knows maybe when he does he will be a bit better." I said wanting to lift his spirits.
"Maybe."
