Part Forty-Four

Daphne's POV

'Which dress should I wear now?' I thought, as I stared at two of the dresses I placed on the bed, deciding on which one would look better to go to Tim's house in.
The last time I was at her place, we couldn't conclude on what to do about the pregnancy. I even remember asking her who was responsible for the pregnancy, but she's been reluctant to give me any information.

I stared back and forth between both dresses; the purple one with a white sash at the middle, or, the flared multicoloured flowered dress. I decided to go with the flowered dress, I'll match it up with my favourite pair of white sandal, then I'll tie a white bandana on my hair.
'Voila! I'll look good to go.'

I made to put the purple dress back into the closet, when the entrance door swung open and Mom walked in. She was in her work clothes-a white shirt and black pencil skirt, with a pair of shiny black stilettos. She shut the door after she came in.

"Where's Bella?" she asked, as usual wanting to know about her best girl. The thought alone infuriated me.

"She's in the bathroom," I answered and kept on looking around for my sandal.

"Okay... I'm about to go to work and I'm aware that you girls need to have your hair done, because you won't be allowed to complete your exams with an unkept hair," she opened her black purse and brought out some money notes. She offered them to me, five hundred naira notes.

I counted them-eight paper notes, which meant four thousand naira.

"There must be a saloon within the estate, Bella will take you to one." she continued "Ensure that you make neat and moderate styles, I might come back later than usual so, the two of you will have to take care,"

Bella chose that as the right time to come out from the bathroom. She had a white towel wrapped around her body, another one covered her hair thoroughly. She must have washed her hair.

"Okay dear you're here, I was telling Ugo here that both of you should have your hair made today. You know any saloon around?"

"Yes aunt, don't worry." she replied like a simple harmless girl. 'Such a two-faced b*tch!'

Mother moved closer to her and kissed her on the head "Take care dear, I'll be back soon." I rolled my eyes in distaste at their mother-daughter lovey-dovey display, then mother patted my shoulder and left.
Great, now they're closer to each other. I felt more infuriated at the realization, why didn't I see that was all Bella wanted. She wanted everyone close to me and she's starting with my mom. I felt like doing something that would make her feel as bad as I felt at the moment, but I had no idea of what I should do.

Nonetheless, nothing would deter me from going to see Timmi today. I wanted to be around her in case she decides to make any drastic decision. Ignoring Bella who's ruffling through her bag for an outfit, I walked towards the bathroom with the dress, while humming to the tune of the music in Barbie in the twelve dancing princess. After fifteen minutes in the bathroom (which wasn't even enough for me to have a proper bathe), I came out in the dress. I combed my hair and let it flow down my shoulders, using the bandana to hold the hair in place.

"Hey, I'm going to see a friend. I'll be back but don't wait for me, go and make your own hair," I told Bella when I saw her coming out from the kitchen with a can of coke in her hand.

"Really? Why am I not surprised that you would do this. Where could you be going that's more important than your own mother's instruction?" she asked.

"Don't meddle in my life! And you're right, she's my mother so I believe I have the right to flop her orders,"

"I'm meddling in your life?! You're the one in my house!" she flared, causing Kachi and Mirian to run out from the kitchen.

"You know if I wasn't in a hurry, I would have given you what you're after this morning, which is trouble. But, thank your lucky stars that I do not have your time..."

"That's bullsh*t! You're in my house and if I say you're not leaving this house, then you're not leaving,"

"Okay, then try to stop me. Take your money," I threw four, five hundred naira notes at her and started walking out the door.

"Aboy, open the gate for me," I instructed once I was outside the building.

"Don't you even dare to open that gate Aboy," she said immediately after me.

I scoffed at her attempt to be mean, did she actually think she could stop me even though she wanted to. Well, I would love to show her that I didn't grow up in Lagos for nothing. I gave him the stink eye, warning him to not try anything to annoy me. I was ready for battle, if that was what they wanted.
I overheard Kachi and Mirian pleading with her to let me go, I couldn't care less about what they were saying to her.

"See, you girls should make up your mind or else I would lock up this gate and go to sleep." Aboy retorted, but his words don't scare me one bit.

I opened my mouth to say something to him when Bella beat me to it.

"Aboy, open the gate for her."
I stared at her in bewilderment. She must have realized that she was no match for me when it came to being crazy, so she gave up.

I boarded a taxi to Timmi's place and suddenly I forgot about how being in same space as Bella made me feel.

After a plate of moimoi and watching the Zeeworld series 'Mehek', Tims and I relaxed on the sofa and began to exchange our views on who was more beautiful. Sonal or Mehek-the heroine of the movie. We were silent for a while before I spoke up again.

"Tims...I know you're very worried about your situation right now, but the truth is you have to think this through before you make any rash decisions. Does the father of the baby know that you're pregnant?"

"No, and there is no need to tell him since I'll be aborting the pregnancy soon." she said, deadpanned serious.

"I can't believe you're serious about this, do you realize that your life is also at risk?" I asked.

"Why are you talking like this?! If you were the person in my shoes, won't you also do what I'm about to do?"

"But I am not the person in your place and I still believe what you're doing is wrong, I'm the only child of my mother, I've yearned to have younger ones around so how could I fathom getting rid of a life."

"Then tell me what I should do, cause I can't put my life on pause because of a silly mistake?!" she screamed, losing her cool.

"Calm down first," I started "second, we'd let the father of this baby know that he's going to become one, then whatever he says we can take it up from there,"

"I can't let him know, because it'll ruin me," she wailed.

"what do you mean? Who's the guy responsible for the pregnancy?"

"He's in our school... he's..." she was about to tell me who the guy was that she slept with, when the door opened.

"Yo girls, wassup?" the voice of her brother, Joaquin, interrupted us.

"I'll tell you later," and she successfully ended the topic for now, but I won't stop until I find out who the guy was that impregnated her.

"Daph, what's up with you naa? I rarely see you around." he asked.

"Oh nothing, we are not at home for now, that's why,"

"Okay," he started walking towards the stairs and I was glad he was leaving, so we can continue our conversation, then he stopped and turned towards us.

"Which reminds me...Timmi...you failed to mention that your school's star player, was dared to chyke a girl..." he had said, totally taking Tims and I by surprise.

Tims stared at me wide-eyed, and I'm sure I looked at her in same way. But Joaquin continued "Are you girls pretending not to know, or you really don't know?"

"Know? Who actually do you mean?" I blurted out.

"Who's GCH's football star player...David Adeleke right, or perhaps someone else?"

"That's a normal game between guys anyway, and it's typical of David to play with a girl's emotions. I hate that guy," Tims blurted before recollecting herself "No offence Daph."

"Yeah it's true, but we had that bet on your birthday last year and no one knew he was going to take it seriously. But from what I heard, he seemed to have really liked the girl."

Tims stared at me, shock written over her face. Of course she knew about my feelings towards David, she knew I always had a crush on him, but I could tell the pity expression. I don't want her pity and certainly don't need it.

"How can you be so sure?" Timmi asked her brother.

"He was at the club submit, one of my friends overheard his conversation with his Muslim friend," he replied.

"Hassan_" Timmi added.

"Yeah, I think the girl's name is something that has to do with mother..."

"Nnenna," I didn't realize when I said the word out, until he concurred.

"Yes, that name. But don't tell him I told you." he eventually stamped his feet twice and went up in the direction of his room.

"I didn't know David could go after someone like her, I mean, she's just a plain Jane." Tims said.

"I don't know either." I mumbled, but I knew one thing-my heart started beating slower than it's normal rate.

Who do you think Timmi was going to call?

Why did her brother walk in on them at that moment?
