We returned to the lodging house that evening in good spirits, laughing and talking as we ate our dinners and settled down in our bunks. I lay in my bunk, listening to the heavy breathing of the others. Once I was sure that everyone was asleep, I stood up and grabbed my cigar, going into ninja mode. I began creeping towards the door. And that's when I felt it. A sneeze rising in my throat.
Oh no you don't, I told myself. You're a ninja. Ninjas don't sneeze. Apparently my brain had other ideas. I sneezed loudly. Oops. I froze in place, hoping no one would notice. When the room stayed silent, I took that as a sign that I was safe and began to head towards the door again.
"Race?" a sleepy voice called from behind me. Crap. Apparently I wasn't safe. I turned to see Jojo sitting up in his bunk, a worried look on his face.
"Where're you goin'?" he asked. I gave him a small smile.
"Just goin' for a walk. Need to clear my head an' all," I said. I heard Finch snort from under his pillow.
"You're 'eads already clear," he murmured. I shot a glare at him.
"Don't worry, kiddo," I said, looking back at Jojo. "I'll be back before midnight, promise," He still looked worried, but nodded.
"Okay. Be careful," he sighed. I nodded as he laid back down, pulling his blanket back over him. I slipped out the door, releasing a breath I didn't know I had been holding. I felt bad lying to Jojo like that, but I needed to get out as quickly as I could. After all, I had someone I needed to talk to, and I had a long walk ahead of me if I wanted to get to Brooklyn before midnight.
Told ya it was short. Only 303 words, my shortest so far. I don't really have ayhthing else to say (shocking, I know), other then the fact that there will be some Sprace stuff next chapter.
Ta ta for now!
