Part Twenty-five

Daphne's POV
"Are you not ready yet Ugo?" Mom called out to me, probably from the sitting room.
"I'm coming!" I shouted from my room then hastily shut down every electricity in the room, the windows included and covered my queen sized bed with a transparent polyethylene, to avoid build up of dust.
I carried my small ecolag box and skipped the stairs to the sitting room where mom's waiting for me.
For this year's Christmas we'll be spending it with some surprise hosts mom told me about during the week.
I agreed to this arrangement probably because I don't want to spend the holidays with Grandma, my dad's mom.
My stepsiblings, Kemi and Kayo would be spending the days with her and their mom, so I figured I should spend the days with my mom as well. Ever since the day of the contest at school, mom has been overly caring.
We spent the previous days cooking and baking all sorts of stuff, redecorating the house, buying groceries and also shopping for our Christmas attire.
I remember mom selecting same clothe design, Fendi for me and the girl she claimed to be the daughter of our soon-to-meet hosts. From the little stories mom told me about them, I put two and two together and realized the girl either has no mother around or her mother was nowhere to be seen while mom was there. It's awkward that I'm going to be meeting with someone my age who's a stranger but I have no other option.
Not unless I want to spend the holidays with Grandma and I can't do that but mom's not going to let me stay home alone, that's for sure.
Kachi has travelled back to her people to spend the holidays, so the house will surely be locked. My mother works in a hotel and rarely gets leave or day-off, it's a miracle she has a lot of those these days.
I managed to pull the box down with me and stood before my mom. She's dressed in a simple yellow sundress with her favourite pair of sandals and carried a very big black bag on her right elbow while she made a call with the phone in her left hand.
I wasn't interested in what she was saying but rather focused on the phone in my hands. I was chatting with few friends on Facebook and trying so hard not to get upset by the number of guys requesting for my contact or address, I wonder why some guys do that.
"The driver has arrived, come on let's go." Mom announced after she ended the call.
We left the house and saw a neat black Lexus waiting outside our gate. ‘whoever's hosting us this Christmas must have it big.’ my subconscious mind spoke.
The driver stepped out of the car, he's light skinned and wearing white shirt with blue jeans. He came to meet us even before we got closer to the car and picked up our baggage, he threw them in the trunk of the car. Thank the Heavens I have nothing destructible inside that bag, my phone has been tucked away safely inside the pocket of the navy blue dungaree jeans I'm wearing.
I entered the backseat and he opened the front seat door for my mother. I'm really happy seeing her being treated like a queen, I made a mental note to thank this man's boss later. He turned the corners, got into the driver's seat and moved the car.
We finally arrived and I knew because, deep in the recess of my mind I could hear the roaring of the car and the honk as we arrived our destination. Throughout the journey I had my eyes closed.
We got to another neat looking estate and the driver stopped the car before a big black gate. He instructed that we come down and head into the house as he would bring our bags.
We got in and before us stood a mighty structure completely painted in white colours, the big door in front was brown in colour. Mom walked closer and rang the doorbell which I didn't realize was there.
It didn't take long for someone to open the door for us. She's black skinned and by black, I mean she's very dark. She's wearing black trouser and a yellow blouse with her hair which she braided in brown attachment.
"Ahh! Aunty Angela you're here." The greeted, smiling cheekily. I'm still amazed at how they're related to my mom, they seem to have developed a stronger bond with her.
She moved aside to grant us space for entering the house. If I was awed by the exterior then I'm awestruck by the interior design. I used to have pride in the fact that my house is one of the most beautiful I've seen but this one that I'm standing in right now is definitely way out of league.
Aside from the white coloured walls of the very wide sitting room, the chestnut coloured tables and sidestools and the black leather cushions, there were small artificial Christmas trees located at different points of the room. The wide wall television is positioned so it's the first thing a visitor sees when entering the sitting room from the lounge.
"Please have a seat." She said to us.
"Oh you don't have to treat us like guests, this is not the first time I'm in this house. Just show Daphne here to her room and I'll deal with myself." My mom chided the girl, who seemed so confused when she called me by my name.
"My bad. Mirian she's Daphne my daughter and Daphne, she's Mirian." Mother introduced while waving her right hand between the both of us.
"Hello Daphne," Mirian said shyly.
"Nice to meet you Mirian." If she's the girl my mom has been talking about then I'm definitely going to get along with her.
"Come let me show you to your room." She started walking to the right corner of the house. There I saw the staircase that would take us upstairs.
We got to another brown door with the banner that says Private property, pasted on it. Mirian opened the door and motioned for me to go in.
When I went in I heard the song Ayo by Simi playing quite loud. Thinking it was my mind creating the sounds, I looked around to be sure then I saw Mirian walked further towards the bed and tapped the slim light skinned girl who's busy dancing to the music she didn't notice anyone come in.
The girl opened her mouth to say something and suddenly looked towards my direction. I was definitely shocked to say the least.
She's the foreigner that sneakily stole my crown from me. What kind of game is fate playing with me, can't it just let me get over the pain and anguish.
"You! What are you doing in my house?" She had the nerve to ask. Well I'm not going to take nonsense from her, if I knew this was her house I definitely won't have bothered coming.
"Excuse me! You think if I knew that this was your house, I'd be here..." I chuckled in mockery, "no babe I'm sorry to disappoint but I've got more important things to do." I made to leave the room which was beginning to feel too hot despite the airconditioner.
"Yeah just get your sick attitude out of my sight!" She spoke loudly.
"Bella!" Mirian shook her. So that's her name.
"What?!"
"She's aunty Angela's daughter."
"And so...what did you say? That's impossible."
"What's impossible, that I took after my beautiful mom or that I'm not her daughter?" I asked the girl, perhaps she's as dense as she looks.
"It's impossible that someone with a rotten and sour attitude like yours would have such a sweet mother." What a douchebag and she claims I have sour attitude.
"Too bad...she's not your mother," I retort.
"She'll be, soon enough and there's nothing you can do about that."
"What are you talking about?"
"Why don't you go and ask her." She smirked and folded her arms over her bare stomach. She's wearing a black sleeveless crop top and gray colour tracksuit.
"I'm leaving this place." I announced and made my way downstairs. I don't know how I remembered the way but thankfully I saw my mom propped on one of the dinning chairs beside the staircase, she seems to be on call.
"Mom I want to go." I was too angry to be rational right now, I wonder what secret they could be probably hiding from me.
She motioned for me to keep quiet while she continued talking. I waited until she was over before I repeated my statement.
"Omo mi we just got here, what's the problem?"
"Let's go mom, I don't want to spend Christmas here anymore." I dragged her by the hand.
"Aunty Angela!!" I heard the she-devil shriek from the stairs.
She ran towards us and pulled my mom for a hug.
I was left even more stunned and speechless when mom hugged her back with so much love.
