|| Apartment ||

Sam and Dean had gone to check out the apartment doing different test, like the EMF and a tape one, to figure out the symbol.

||  Bar  ||

Dean is flirting with the attractive bartender. Sam and Scarlett enter and look around. Dean notices and takes one last drink, then smiles at the bartender and leaves.

"See ya." Dean says. At the other side of the room, Scarlett and Sam find an empty table and sits down, taking out Sam takes out his father's journal. He leafs through the pages, and shortly, Dean sits down across from them.

"I talked to the bartender." Dean says.

"Did you get anything? Besides her number?" Sam asks.

"Dude, I'm a professional. I'm offended that you would think that." Dean says. Sam gives him a knowing look. "All right, yeah." Dean chuckles and holds up a napkin with the bartender's phone number on it.

"You mind doin' a little bit of thinking with your upstairs brain, Dean?" Sam asks.

"Don't do that very often." Scarlett says.

"Huh? Look, there's nothing to find out. I mean, Meredith worked here, she waited tables, everyone here was her friend. Everybody said she was normal. She didn't do or say anything weird before she died, so—what about that symbol, you find anything?" Dean asks.

"Nope, nothing. It wasn't in Dad's journal or in any of the usual books. I just have to dig a little deeper, I guess." Sam says.

"Well, there was a first victim, right? Before Meredith?" Dean asks.

"Right. Yeah." Sam pulls out a newspaper clipping concerning the first death "His name was, uh—his name was Ben Swardstrom." Sam hands the clipping to Dean "Last month he was found mutilated in his town house. Same deal—the door was locked, the alarm was on."

"Is there any connection between the two of them?" Scarlett asks.

"Not that I can tell—I mean, not yet, at least. Ben was a banker, Meredith was a waitress. They never met, never knew anyone in common—they were practically from different worlds." Sam explains.

"So, to recap, the only successful intel we've scored so far is the bartender's phone number," Dean smirks. Scarlett rolls her eyes and head to the bar. Sam seems to notice something on the other side of the room. Dean looks around.

"What?" Dean asks, Sam gets up and begins walking away. "Sam?" Dean asks as Sam continues to walk away. He reaches another table, where a young woman with short blonde hair is seated with her back to him. He puts his hand on her shoulder, and she turns around, it's Meg.

"Meg," Sam asks.

"Sam!" Meg greets, Sam looks at her curiously.

Scarlett is at the bar when a guy around her age approaches her.

"Hi, I'm Zach." The guy says as Scarlett looks at him.

"Lottie." She says.

"Can I buy a drink?" He asks.

"Underage." She laughs.

"What's funny?" He asks.

"My dad's name is Zach, I should get back to my friends." She says, he catches her wrist, she sees his fangs.

"You're a Salvatore." He says.

"No, you dick. I'm a Fairchild, now let me go before I snap that neck of yours. Might serve you up to Damon Salvatore he loves to torture."  She warns and he's her go.

"Be ready for what's coming Fairchild." He says walking away.

Sam is still with Meg at her table.

"Sam! Is that you? Oh, my God!" Meg stands up and they hug. Sam looks slightly puzzled. They pull away a few seconds later. "What are you doing here?"

"I'm just in town, visiting friends," Sam says, Meg looks around.

"Where are they?" She asks.

"Well, they're not here right now, but what about you, Meg? I thought you were goin' to California." He says as Dean comes up behind him.

"Oh, I did. I came, I saw, I conquered. Oh, and I met what's-his-name, something Michael Murray at a bar." Meg says.

"Who?" Sam asks.

"Oh, it doesn't matter. Anyway, the whole scene got old, so I'm living here for a while." She says and Dean clears his throat loudly, but he is ignored.

"You're from Chicago?" Sam asks.

"No, Massachusetts—Andover. Gosh, Sam, what are the odds we'd run into each other?" Meg asks.

"Yeah, I know, I thought I'd never see you again," Sam says.

"Well, I'm glad you were wrong," Meg says, Sam nods. Dean clears his throat again, louder this time. "Dude, cover your mouth." She says as Scarlett arrives hearing this and laughs.

"Yeah, um, I'm sorry, Meg. This is, uh—this is my brother, Dean and our friend Scarlett." Sam says She is surprised.

"This is Dean?" She asks, Dean smiles. "And Scarlett?" She asks looking at her,

"Yeah," Sam says.

"So, you've heard of me?" Dean asks.

"Oh, yeah. I've heard of you. Nice—the way you treat your brother like luggage." She says and Dean and Scarlett look confused.

"Sorry?" Dean asks.

"Why don't you let him do what he wants to do? Stop dragging him over God's green earth." Meg asks.

"Meg, it's all right," Sam says the four of them look around quietly. Dean whistles lowly.

"Okay, awkward. I'm gonna get a drink now." Dean gives Sam a puzzled look, then walks over to the bar. Sam and Scarlett share a look.

"I'll go with." Scarlett eyes Meg before leaving.

"Sam, I'm sorry. It's just—the way you told me he treats you....if it were me, I'd kill him." Meg says. "He has Scarlett wrapped around his finger."

"It's all right. He means well and he doesn't, Scarlett makes her own choices, she cares for us we care for her." Sam says and Meg nods.

"Well, we should hook up while you're in town." She says.

"Yeah," Sam says.

"I'll show you a hell of a time." She says.

"You know what, that sounds great. Why don't you, uh—why don't you give me your number?" He takes out his cell phone and gets ready to input Meg's number.

"312-555-0143," she says.

"You know what, I never got your last name." He says.

"Masters." She says.

"Masters?" He asks.

"So, you better call." She says.

"Scout's Honor." He says.

"I hope to see you around, Sam." She says, He smiles at her and walks away.

|| Outside the Bar ||

Dean, Scarlett, and Sam are walking back to the car.

"Who the hell was she?" Dean asks.

"I don't really know. I only met her once. Meeting up with her again? I don't know, man, it's weird." Sam says.

"And what was she saying? I treat you like luggage? What, were you bitchin' about me to some chick?" Dean asks.

"Look, I'm sorry, Dean. It was when we had that huge fight when I was in that bus stop in Indiana. But that's not important, just listen-" Sam apologizes.

"Well, is there any truth to what she's saying? I mean, am I keeping you against your will, Sam?" Dean asks. Sam looks at Scarlett, who gives him a small smile.

"No, of course not. Now, would you listen?" Sam asks.

"What?" Dean asks.

"I think there's somethin' strange going on here, Dean," Sam says.

"Yeah, tell me about it. She wasn't even that into me." Dean says.

"Yeah, she was into me." Scarlett has a playful smile, Dean rolls his eyes at her.

"No, man, I mean like our kind of strange. Like, maybe even a lead." Sam clarifies.

"Why do you say that?" Dean asks.

"I met Meg weeks ago, literally on the side of the road. And now, I run into her in some random Chicago bar? I mean, the same bar where a waitress was slaughtered by something supernatural? You don't think that's a little weird?" Sam asks.

"I don't know, random coincidence. It happens." Dean says.

"Meg isn't normal. Her vibes are strong, full of energy." Scarlett agrees with Sam.

"Yeah, it happens, but not to us. Look, I could be wrong, I'm just sayin' that there's something about this girl that I can't quite put my finger on. Scarlett said she's charged up with energy, shed might be a witch." Sam says and Dean smirks.

"Totally not a witch, she feels dark, very dark," Scarlett says looking at the brothers.

"Well, I bet you'd like to. I mean, maybe she's not a suspect, maybe you've got a thing for her, huh?" Dean tells Sam who rolls his eyes and laughs. " Maybe you're thinkin' a little too much with your upstairs brain, huh?" Dean points to his head and grins. Sam becomes serious again.

"Do me a favor. Check and see if there's really a Meg Masters from Andover, Massachusetts, and see if you can't dig anything up on that symbol on Meredith's floor." Sam says.

"What are you gonna do?" Dean asks.

"I'm gonna watch Meg," Sam says.

"Yeah, you are," Dean says laughing.

"I just wanna see what's what. Better safe than sorry." Sam says.

"All right, you little pervert." Dean teases.

"Dude." Sam warns.

"I'm goin', I'm goin'." Dean takes Scarlett's hand in his. "Bye Sam be careful." She waves and they cross the street and leaving Sam.

|| Motel Room ||

Dean and Scarlett are on the computer, researching Meg and the symbol. Dean picks up his cell phone and dials a number, Sam picks up.

"Hey." Sam greets.

"Let me guess. You're lurkin' outside that poor girl's apartment, aren't you?" Dean asks.

"No," Sam says and Dean waits for another response. Sam rolls his eyes. "Yes."

"You've got a funny way of showin' your affection," Dean says.

"Not the only one," Scarlett tells Dean.

"Did you find anything on her or what?" Sam asks.

"Sorry, man, she checks out. There is a Meg Masters in the Andover phonebook. I even pulled up her high school photo. Now, look, why don't you go knock on her door and, uh, invite her to a poetry reading, or whatever it is you do, huh?" Dean asks.

"What about the symbol? Any luck? Oh and Scarlett's right." Sam says ignoring Dean's comment.

"Yeah, that I did have some luck with," Scarlett says looks down at the research. "It's, uh—turns out it's Zoroastrian. Very, very old school, like two thousand years before Christ. It's a sigil for a Daeva." She says.

"What's a Daeva?" Sam asks.

"It translates to a "demon of darkness". Zoroastrian demons and they're savage, animalistic, you know, nasty attitudes—kind of like, uh, demonic pit bulls." Dean says.

"How'd you figure that out?" Sam asks.

"Give me some credit, man. You don't have a corner on paper chasin' around here." Dean says.

"I'm here." Scarlett says teasing Dean.

"Oh, yeah? Name the last book you read." Sam asks.

"No, I called Dad's friend, Caleb. He told me, all right?" Dean says defeated.

"Yeah." Sam glances up at Meg's dark bedroom window.

"Anyway, here's the thing—these Daevas, they have to be summoned, conjured." Dean informs.

"So, someone's controlling it?" Sam asks.

"Yeah, that's what I'm sayin'. And, from what I gather, it's pretty risky business, too. These suckers tend to bite the hand that feeds them. And, uh, the arms, and torsos." Dean says.

"Poor things." Scarlett says. Dean shoots her a look. "I have magic, I'd hate it if I was being controlled." She adds and Dean nods his head.

"So, what do they look like?" Sam asks.

"Well, nobody knows, but nobody's seen 'em for a couple of millennia. I mean, summoning a demon that ancient? Someone really knows their stuff. I think we've got a major player in town. Now, why don't you go give that girl a private strip-o-gram?" Dean says.

"Bite me." Sam says.

"No, bite her. Don't leave teeth marks, though—" Dean says, Sam hangs up. "Sam? Are you—?" Dean hangs up his own phone.

"You don't think before you speak." Scarlett says getting up.

"You usually like it when I don't think before I speak." Dean teases.

"Well, not tonight. I ran into a vampire, tonight at the bar." She says.

"What?" He asks.

"He said I need to be ready for what's coming. Dean I don't know if this is my mother's enemies or the Salvatore ones, they know I'm a Salvatore." She says.

"Hey, Hey, I got you Doll. I won't let them." He says.

"Damon warned me. You'll be used as leverage Dean, you and Sam. If they can get their hands on your dad, they will use him too." She says.

"They won't, my dads good at what he does Doll. The vampires won't get to him." He reassures her.

"I just don't want you to get hurt because of me. Any of you." She says walking away from him to the other side of the room.

"Nothing will." He walks over to her and hugs her.

Back at the car, Sam glances back up at Meg's window. A few seconds later, a light turns on. Meg enters her bedroom, wearing a black lace bra. Sam looks around uncomfortably, then continues to watch Meg. She puts on a T-shirt. Sam is interrupted by someone clearing their throat. He turns and sees a woman standing outside the car, looking annoyed. She gestures to the window.

"Oh, no, no, no, I'm just—" he try's to explain.

"Pervert." She walks away angrily. Sam is stunned. A second later, Meg leaves her apartment, now wearing a sweatshirt and jacket as well. She walks across the street, briefly glancing at the parked car. Once she is gone, Sam, who had been hiding, sits up. He gets out of the car and follows her into a warehouse.

|| Warehouse ||

Sam had gone into the warehouse and sees Meg in front of an alter speaking to someone.

||  Motel Room ||

Sam, Dean and Scarlett are talking.

"So, hot little Meg is summoning the Daeva?" Dean asks.

"Looks like she was using that black altar to control the thing." Sam says.

"So, Sammy's got a thing for the bad girl." Dean chuckles. Sam rolls his eyes. "And what's the deal with that bowl again?"

"She was talking into it. The way witches used to scry into crystal balls or animal entrails. She was communicating with someone." Sam says.

"Offensive, we just write a note and send a note to the other." Scarlett says.

"With who? With the Daeva?" Dean asks.

"No, you said those things were savages. No, this was someone different. Someone who's giving her orders. Someone who's comin' to that warehouse." Sam says, Dean thinks for a moment and glances at some files on a nearby table. He sits down at the table and looks through them.

"Holy crap." Dean says.

"What?" Sam asks.

"What I was gonna tell you earlier—I pulled a favor with my–" Dean clears his throat "– friend, Amy, over at the police department. The complete records of the two victims—we missed something the first time."

"What?" Sam comes over to look at the records.

"The first victim, the old man—he spent his whole life in Chicago, but he wasn't born here. Look where he was born." Dean points to something on the page.

"Lawrence, Kansas." Sams aya.

"Mmhmm." Dean picks up the second file. "Meredith, the second victim—turns out she was adopted. And guess where she's from" Dean asks. The paper reads "Lawrence, Kansas". Sam sits down across from Dean, clearly shocked.

"Holy crap." Sam says.

"Yeah." Scarlett says.

"I mean, it is where the demon killed Mom. That's where everything started. So, you think Meg's tied up with the demon?" Sam asks.

"I think it's a definite possibility." Dean says.

"But I don't understand. What's the significance of Lawrence? And how do these Daeva things fit in?" Sam asks.

"Beats me. But I say we trash that black altar, grab Meg, and have ourselves a friendly little interrogation." Dean says.

"No, we can't. We shouldn't tip her off. We've gotta stake out that warehouse. We've gotta see who, or what, is showin' up to meet her." Sam says.

"I'll tell you one thing. I don't think we should do this alone." Dean says.

Dean is leaving a message on John's voicemail. While he is talking, Sam enters the room with bags full of weapons and Scarlett.

"We think we've got a serious lead on the thing that killed Mom. So, uh, this warehouse—it's 1435 West Erie. Dad, if you get this, get to Chicago as soon as you can." Dean hangs up.

"Voicemail?" Sam asks.

"Yeah." Dean gestures to the bags "Jesus, what'd you get?" He asks, Sam chuckles.

"I ransacked that trunk. Holy water, every weapon that I could think of, exorcism rituals from about a half dozen religions. I'm not sure what to expect, so I guess we should just expect everything." Sam says Dean nods, and they begin loading their guns silently.

"And snacks." Scarlett smiles handing Dean a slice of pie.

"Big night." Dean takes the pie.

"Yeah. You nervous?" Sam asks.

"No. Why, are you?" Dean asks.

"No. No way." Sam says, they are silent for a few seconds. "God, could you imagine if we actually found that damn thing? That demon?"

"Let's not get ahead of ourselves, all right?" Dean says.

"I know. I'm just sayin', what if we did? What if this whole thing was over tonight? Man, I'd sleep for a month. Go back to school—be a person again." Sam says.

"You wanna go back to school?" Dean asks.

"Yeah, once we're done huntin' the thing." Sam says.

"Huh." Dean says, Scarlett give him a look.

"Why, is there somethin' wrong with that?" Sam asks.

"No. No, it's, uh, great. Good for you." Dean says.

"I mean, what are you gonna do when it's all over?" Sam asks.

"It's never gonna be over. There's gonna be others. There's always gonna be somethin' to hunt." Dean says.

"But there's got to be somethin' that you want for yourself—" Sam looks at Scarlett who gives him a small smile.

"Yeah, I don't want you to leave the second this thing's over, Sam." Dean walks over to the dresser.

"Dude, what's your problem?" Sam asks Dean who's silent for a while, then turns back to Sam.

"Why do you think I drag you everywhere? Huh? I mean, why do you think I came and got you at Stanford in the first place?" Dean asks.

"Cause Dad was in trouble. 'Cause you wanted to find the thing that killed Mom." Sam says.

"Yes, that, but it's more than that, man." Dean returns to the dresser and is silent again, then once more turns to Sam. "You and me and Dad—I mean, I want us....I want us to be together again. I want us to be a family again." He says.

"Dean, we are a family. I'd do anything for you. But things will never be the way they were before." Sam says, Dean looks heartbroken.

"Could be." Dean says sadly.

"I don't want them to be. I'm not gonna live this life forever. Dean, when this is all over, you're gonna have to let me go my own way." Sam and Dean share a look.

|| Warehouse ||

The three climb the elevator gate and reach the top room. Meg is standing at the altar, speaking in an ancient language. Quietly, Sam, Dean and Scarlett squeeze through the space between the gate and the wall. They draw their guns and move to the other side of the room, hiding behind some crates.

"Guys." Meg says, The three  look at each other, stunned. "Hiding's a little bit childish, don't you think?" She asks.

"Well, that didn't work out like I planned." Dean says. Meg turns around to face them.

"Why don't you come out?" Meg says and Scarlett, Sam and Dean come out from behind the crates. "Sam, I have to say, this puts a real crimp in our relationship." She says.

"Yeah, tell me about it." Sam says.

"So, where's your little Daeva friend?" Dean asks.

"Around. You know, that shotgun's not gonna do much good." Meg says.

"Oh, don't worry, sweetheart. The shotgun's not for the demon." Dean says.

"So, who is it, Meg? Who's coming? Who are you waiting for?" Sam asks.

"You." She says, The shadow demon begins to form on the wall. It knocks Sam and Scarlett to the ground and throws Dean into the crates. A claw-like scratch appears on Sam's face and Scarlett's chest.

|| Warehouse ||

Dean, Scarlett and Sam are tied to three separate posts. Sam sees Meg sitting before him.

"Hey, Sam? Don't take this the wrong way, but your girlfriend...is a bitch." Dean says, Scarlett laughs, but stop due to her body aching.

"This, the whole thing, was a trap. Running into you at the bar, following you here, hearin' what you had to say. It was all a set-up, wasn't it?" Sam asks and Meg laughs. "And that the victims were from Lawrence?"

"It doesn't mean anything. It was just to draw you in, that's all." Meg says.

"You killed those two people for nothin'," Sam says.

"Baby, I've killed a lot more for a lot less," Meg says.

"You trapped us. Good for you. It's Miller time." Dean smiles. "But why don't you kill us already?"

"Not very quick on the uptake, are we?" Meg leans in closer. "This trap isn't for you." Dean is puzzled. Sam thinks for a second, then realizes something.

"Dad. It's a trap for Dad." Sam says, Dean looks at Meg, who smiles at him.

"Oh, sweetheart—you're dumber than you look. 'Cause even if Dad was in town, which he is not, he wouldn't walk into something like this. He's too good." Dean says.

"He is pretty good. I'll give you that." Meg walks over to Dean and sits down, straddling his legs. "But you see, he has one weakness."

"What's that?" Dean asks, Scarlett stares at Meg like she'll rip her head off for sitting on Dean.

"You. He lets his guard down around his boys, lets his emotions cloud his judgment. I happen to know he is in town. And he'll come and try to save you. And then the Daevas will kill everybody—nice and slow and messy." Meg says.

"Well, I've got news for ya. It's gonna take a lot more than some....shadow to kill him." Dean says.

"Oh, the Daevas are in the room here,—they're invisible. Their shadows are just the only part you can see." Meg says.

"Why you doin' this, Meg? What kind of deal you got worked out here, huh? And with who?" Sam asks.

"I'm doing this for the same reasons you do what you do—loyalty. Love. Like the love you had for Mommy—and Jess." Meg says.

"Go to hell," Sam says.

"Baby, I'm already there." Meg smiles, she stands in front of Scarlett. "Now, this is a sob case, Salvatore Orphan or Fairchild Orphan? Or do you prefer Gilbert Orphan? Which one do you go by?" Meg asks.

"I go by Scarlett Gilbert, you psycho Bitch," Scarlett says.

"Now I may be evil, but your family takes the cake. They're the reigning of bastards." Meg's finger glides over Scarlett's face. "Now, you come from evil Scarlett. But you're worse, you let that stupid little bracelet define you, you should embrace the darkness Scarlett you know it's calling your name." Meh taunts.

"You don't know crap about me," Scarlett says looking at her.

"You lost your parents the adoptive ones, lost your child, god your baby daddy hated you. Now he can hardly see you, your Grams is dead, and your best friend turned into a vampire. The other one is dead. God everyone leaves don't they? I am right, right?" Meg asks staring at Scarlett.

"Spring 04, New York City." She says Scarlett's eyes widen. "Lockwoo-"

"Shut up," Scarlett says angered. "You may know some things but you don't know Tyler and I's relationship, and you definitely don't know me." She says getting ready to rip Meg's head off. Her bracelet is off.

"I do know about your Family, the prestigious Gilbert Family, before the war the Salvatore were the same, they were practically royalty in the small town of yours. The Fairchild witches are very strong, one of the strongest." She informs, "your dear Grams Bennett didn't make it, who's next? Embrace it, Scarlett, you won't feel a thing. Do the boys know what you are?" Meg asks, Scarlett is almost in tears. "Don't make me reveal all your family tragedy." She whispers in her ear.

"Mommy dearest was Fairchild Orphan, abandoned by her own parents. Boarding school was her home, but all the expensive schooling and expensive shrinks didn't help with daddy issues, come on, Your dad is almost eleven years older than her. Daddy issues at its finest, you have them don't you? I mean you like Dean Winchester, he has Daddy issues, Gilbert Orphan." Meg says.

"You sure you don't want to sleep with me instead of Sam? You're so invested in my life."  Scarlett says.

"Keep her," Sam says. Meg slides over to Sam

"Come on, Sam. There's no need to be nasty." Meg leans in to whisper in his ear. "I think we both know how you really feel about me. You know, I saw you watching me— changing in my apartment. Turned you on, didn't it?" She asks.

"Get a room, you two," Dean says.

"I didn't mind. I liked that you were watching me. Come on, Sammy. You and I can still have a little dirty fun" Meg begins kissing his neck. "Scarlett can join us." She says and Scarlett looks at her shocked.

"You wanna have fun? Go ahead then. I'm a little tied up right now." Sam says and She smiles and continues to kiss him. A noise on Dean's side of the room makes her stop. She gets up and walks behind Dean's post. She sees he has a knife in his hand. She takes it away and tosses it into a corner. Meg swings around to the other side of the post and smiles at Dean, who chuckles guiltily. She slides back over to Sam.

"Now, were you just trying to distract me while your brother cuts free?" Meg asks.

"No. No. That's because I have a knife of my own." Sam says and Meg is confused. Sam breaks free from his ropes and grabs Megs's shoulders, then knocks his head against hers. She falls to the floor while he groans in pain.  Scarlett sets free.

"Scarlett! Get the altar. " Dean says, Scarlett lifts her hand and flips the alter. Suddenly, the shadow demon appears and grabs Meg. She is dragged across the floor and crashes through the window. Scarlett runs to stop her but Meg is down to the street below. Sam grabs his knife and cuts Dean free from his ropes. They walk over to the window and see Meg sprawled on the sidewalk, dead.

"So, I guess the Daevas didn't like being bossed around," Sam says.

"Yeah, I guess not. Hey, Sam?" Dean asks.

"Hm?" Sam says.

"Next time you wanna get laid, find a girl that's not so buckets-o'-crazy, huh?" Dean smiles and walks away.

"Hopefully she isn't obsessed with my life." Scarlett teases.

||  Motel Hallway  ||

Dean, Scarlett, and Sam are walking back to their room.

"How are you feeling? Any changes?" Dean asks.

"Nope, still human witch me." Scarlett says.

"That's good." Sam says.

"Why didn't you just leave that stuff in the car?" Dean asks.

"I said it before, and I'll say it again—better safe than sorry," Sam says, Dean unlocks the door and they enter the room. They see the outline of a man standing by the window.

"Hey!" Dean says as Sam turns on the light. The man turns around, it's John Winchester. Sam and Dean are both stunned, "Dad?"

"Hey, boys." John greets. Dean and John walk towards each other and share a long, emotional hug. Sam watches sadly alongside Scarlett, Dean and John pull apart a few seconds later. "Hi, Sam." Johns says.

"Hey, Dad." Sam says softly Sam and John do not hug, but look at each other. Sam places the bag full of weapons on the floor.

"Scarlett Gilbert." John Winchester greet with a hand shake.

"Mr.Winchester." She smiles.

"I'm sorry about your parents and your child." John says she nods her head.

"Thank you for the gift basket, my brother enjoyed the jerky." She says.

"Dad, it was a trap. I didn't know, I'm sorry." Dean says.

"It's all right. I thought it might've been." John says.

"Were you there?" Dean asks.

"Yeah, I got there just in time to see the girl take the swan dive. She was the bad guy, right? Scarlett took out the table, how?" John asks. "I didn't know Gilberts posse the gift of magic." He looks at Scarlett.

"Yes, sir." The brothers say.

"Good. Well, it doesn't surprise me. It's tried to stop me before." John says.

"I'm not a Gilbert by blood, my mother is a Fairchild, I come from a long line of witches." Scarlett says, John nods his head.

"You've met your parents?" He asks.

"Yes, my biological ones. How's do you know them?" She asks.

"Your mom and dad gave us hospitality, Sam was sick she was pregnant with you." He says.

"Were you there when my uncle Damon was?" She asks.

"When he attacked her?" He asks, she nods her head. "He almost killed her if it wasn't for Stefan, Damon was locked in a cellar. We left town."  he says.

"You didn't kill them?" Scarlett asks surprised.

"Your mother asked me not to, she'd deal with them as she sees fit, we made an arrangement."  John says.

"The founding family council." Scarlett says connecting the dots. "You were the reason we didn't have many vampires besides the ones in the tomb." She adds. John nods his head.

"The demon has tried to stop you?" Sam asks.

"It knows I'm close. It knows I'm gonna kill it. Not just exorcise it or send it back to hell—actually kill it." John says.

"How?" Dean asks, John smiles.

"I'm workin' on that." John says.

"Let us come with you. We'll help." Sam says, Dean  gives Sam warning look.

"No, Sam. Not yet. Just try to understand. This demon is a scary son of a bitch. I don't want you caught in a crossfire. I don't want you hurt." John says.

"Dad, you don't have to worry about us." Sam says. "Scarlett can make us protection charms." He adds.

"Of course I do. I'm your father." John pauses. "Listen, Sammy, last time we were together, we had one hell of a fight." He add.

"Yes, sir." Sam says.

"It's good to see you again. It's been a long time." John says.

"Too long." Sam and John embrace, crying. A minute later, they pull apart. The four of them look around tearfully. Suddenly, the shadow demon attacks John. He is thrown into a set of cabinets and falls to the ground and Sam also falls.

"No!" Dean and Scarlett are thrown to the floor as well. Outside, Meg is watching the apartment. She looks at the building while holding a pendant around her neck, which features the Zoroastrian symbol. Demon Attack.

Sam, Scarlett, Dean, and John are still being attacked by the shadow demon. They groan and scream in pain as they are flung around the room. Fresh scratches appear on their faces. Sam makes his way to the bag of weapons on the floor. He removes a flare from the bag.

"Shut your eyes! These things are shadow demons, so let's light 'em up!" Sam lights the flare, and the room is instantly filled with smoke and a brilliant white light. The shadow demon vanishes. The three of them try to feel their way around the room, coughing and sputtering.

"Dad! Scarlett! " Dean says.

"Over here!" John shas, Dean and Scarlett make their way to John and help him up. Sam follows them out of the room, carrying the bag of weapons.

Scarlett, Sam, John, and Dean exit the building and walk down an alley to the car. Sam puts the bag in the backseat of the car.

"All right, come on. We don't have much time. As soon as the flare's out, they'll be back." Sam says.

"Wait, wait, wait! Sam, wait. Dad, you can't come with us." Dean says.

"What? What are you talkin' about?" Sam asks.

"You boys and girl—you're beat to hell." John says.

"We'll be all right." Dean says and looks at Scarletts wound that are disappearing.

"Dean, we should stick together. We'll go after those demons—" Sam says.

"Sam! Listen to me! We almost got Dad killed in there. Don't you understand? They're not gonna stop. They're gonna try again. They're gonna use us to get to him. I mean, Meg was right. Dad's vulnerable when he's with us. He—he's stronger without us around." Dean says.

"Dad--no." Sam puts a hand on his father's shoulder. Dean watches sadly. "After everything-- after all the time we spent lookin' for you—please. I gotta be a part of this fight."

"Sammy, this fight is just starting. And we are all gonna have a part to play. For now, you've got to trust me, son." John says, Sam shakes his head no. "Okay, you've gotta let me go." He adds. The Winchester's are silent for a moment, close to tears. Finally, Sam looks at his hand on his dad's shoulder, and then pats his father's shoulder once, then lets go. John and Dean share a look, then John walks to his truck. Once there, he looks back at them one more time.  "Be careful, boys." He says,

"Scarlett a word please." John says, Scarlett follows him.

"You need to be careful, we have enemies and you getting close to Dean, you'll be used against him. I see the way my son looks at you, you look at him the same way. The ritual can't happen, you can't release that evil into this world." He says, she nods.

"We're looking for a way to stop it, I don't even know exactly what it is." She says.

"If you want answers look for the oldest vampires, investigate in your own town, you're being held because of what you are. Meg said you're evil and that might be true because of who you come from but don't let it out around my boys." He warns.

"I won't. John be safe." She says.

"Be safe, take care of my boys and yourself. Send your mother my regards. Once again I'm sorry about your parents and how's your shot?" He asks.

"It's better than Dean's." Scarlett teases.

"Funny." Dean says. John laughs and gets in his truck and drives away.

"Come on." Dean says. Scarlett, Dean and Sam get into the car and watch as their father's truck turns the corner. Dean and Sam look at each other knowingly. Without a word, Dean starts the car and they leave. Meg comes onto the street from a flight of stairs. She turns and watches them leave.
