ABEL

It was completely quiet as La Mar and I walked the few blocks to school.

The only noise you can hear is our shoes hitting against the ground every time we took a step.

I yawn and rub my tried red eyes.

Last night, I barely had any sleep due to the heavy thoughts weighting on my mind.

It hurts to see my momma come home from work every other night crying.

I want to comfort her, but she always sends me away because she doesn't want me to see her like this.

Her words are always "I'm okay," but in the back of my mind, I know it's a lie.

It's tough that she works long hours, and we're barely making it.

I know how hard it is on her.

My father left when I was younger, so I'm fatherless. He never gave a fuck about me.

The walk to school continues to be slient until we reach the staircase to the entrance.

La Mar and I felt someone bump us roughly.

I'm not surprised to see Desmond in front of us with a grin on his face.

"I saw you staring at my girl yesterday. A fair warning, you do that again I will fuck you up." He says glaring at me.

"I would like to see you try." I speak.

Desmond confirmed he's dating Alice, it's funny how insecure he is about me looking at his girl.

Who the fuck is he to tell me what I can, and can't look at?

He realizes his threat did nothing, so he's more than ready to fight me right now.

He feels like he been disrespected because I took what he said lightly.

Just as Desmond was about ready to throw a punch at me, he quickly stops. The principal witnessed what is going on upon his arrival.

It was broken up before it could get started.

Without hesitation Desmond walks away, but still gave me that ice cold stare as he does.

"That nigga has issues." La Mar says shaking his head side to side.

"Indeed he does." I say in response.

Seconds later James meets with us, and we hangout a few minutes until the second bell rings.

> >

A few classes go by, and sooner or later I meet up with Kai for our computer class.

We walked there together.

We sit on our seats, and talk about random things while we wait for class to start.

I'm never this early, but hanging with Kai changes shit.

Moments later Crystal walks in, and unexpectedly swings at me.

This is the second time someone tries to fight me today.

I move in time and make her miss me.

"Why did you do that Abel? It could've been anyone but Daisy." She yells.

I'm glad no one is here right now, besides the three of us.

Kai looks confused and doesn't move.

I was hoping crystal forgot about the situation and would let it go.

She has no right to be mad at me.

I place my hands up as I keep backing away from her."Chill out." I say.

Crystal is still upset about me sleeping with her sister Daisy, she begins to swing at me some more.

Kai got in front to protect me. "Stop." She says calmly pushing her away.

I can't fight a girl.

Crystal pushes Kai back, and tries to get around her but can't. "Mind your own business, and get out of my way."

"Leave him alone." Kai says.

The teacher finally walks in and yells at them to stop.

We all get sent to our seats as students are now making thier way in.

"Thanks for that." I say to Kai.

She simply nods with a smile, and Crystal rolls her eyes annoyingly.

Class starts and Mrs. Meyer gives us a game assignment to play.

It's a fun way to learn fast typing on the keyboard.

The key is to quickly type out all the letters that go fast across the screen.

Everyone gets three rounds once a week.

This is our first round, and the goal is to beat your own score every week.

Kai and I make a bet on the better higher score. Whoever loses has to buy a shake for the other person after school.

We're scoring about the same when we begin, but that suddenly changes.

I look at her screen, and realize i'm about to lose this bet. I reach over to her keyboard, and press random keys to mess her up.

She slaps my hand away. "Abel you're cheating." She whisper yells.

I chuckle. "There's no rules."

"Two can play that game." She says with a grin.

Kai reaches over to my keyboard and does the same to me, but all I do is laugh.

When it's game over we both end up with really bad scores.

"You suck Abel." Kai says as she looks at her computer screen with disappointment.

"According to my score it's better than yours. I believe you're the one who sucks." I say laughing some more.

She drifts her eyes to my computer screen and frowns. "Yeah by one single point."

I shrug. "A win is a win Kai."

"You cheated, I had the winning score. I'm not buying you a shake loser."

"Fine whatever." I say.

We goof off until class is over.

When the bell rings we begin to walk to our meet up spot for lunch. It's been a routine.

"Why is Crystal mad at you? She went crazy on you." Kai questions me.

"She's tripping." I say.

"Seems to me like she's tripping over someone."

I rub the back of my head. "At the party she was trying so hard to get me fucked up. fucked up to the point she hoped i'd fuck her. I got away from her because I don't want that. I been knowing that she liked me since the moment we met. I've been giving her clear signals that I don't like her that way, but she doesn't seem to get it.

"That night I ran into her sister, and I ended up in her bed. It just happened, and Crystal found us in her room the next morning. She went crazy so I left as fast as I could."

Kai nods. "Do you like Daisy?"

"Nah, she's cute but I wouldn't say that I like her. Shit just happened."

We finally make it to the spot but no one is here yet.

"So, how about that shake on me after school? since I cheated you out of that win." I speak as we stop in front of the lockers.

My grandmother gave me a few dollars last night, it's not often when I get money.

"You owe me one, I'm not going to say no." She says.

"Alright."

Once the group meets up we grab lunch and hangout.

KAIRI (After School at Milly's Cafe.)

Abel and I sit at the far end at one of booth tables. We're here as planned.

The restaurant is empty, and that is out of the ordinary. It's usually packed here.

There's about six people, but they're all scattered further away from the two of us.

It's nice to feel like the whole place is to ourselves.

"Kai can I ask you something?" Abel asks as he sits across from me.

It was a sudden question.

"Sure." I say.

"I don't want you to think i'm being an asshole for asking you. I'm just curious that's all."

I don't know where this is going.

"It's ok, you can ask." I say.

I would be lying if I said i'm not nervous. It could be anything he is about to ask me.

"I notice you call Nora by her name. If she's not your mom then where is your mother? If you don't want to answer I understand. I truly apologize for asking if it's a touchy subject." He says.

I sigh. "My mom is no longer here, she died two years ago. As for my father he moved away with a new woman and forget about me and my brother. From that day I no longer claim him as my father.

"Anyways my mom signed off papers to Nora in case something ever happened to her. It was around the time she felt herself become very sick.

Nora is now mine and my brother Julian guardian. My mom and Nora used to be best friends since they were children. We spent a lot of time at their house as I was growing up. This is how Derrick and I got close as well. He's my best friend, but also like my brother.

We all used to live in california, but Nora later moved out here while we stayed over there. When my mom passed away, Nora had to come get us. It was easier to move out here because she had everything. Honestly she's like a mom to me. I haven't gotten comfortable with the thought of calling her mom yet, but I could never repay her for what she did. She took my brother and I in like her own children."

Aside from Abel I never told anyone this, but I feel it's easy to open up to him.

It's the way he carries himself.

Abel takes a long sip of his vanilla shake before saying something.

I tried to hide that i'm a little upset about the subject, but Abel knew it. I can tell he feels bad for ever bringing the topic up.

"You know, I can't thank Nora enough, or repay her myself." He finally says.

I look at him confused. "Why is that?"

"If she didn't take y'all in, then I wouldn't have probably met you." He says.

I suddenly felt a rush of adrenaline, and my heart raced at his words. That was sweet, and enough to put a smile on my face.

I can't help but to crush even harder on him.

He knew exactly what to say, and I can tell it was genuine. It made me forget the sadness the topic had brought me.

"I'm so happy I met you Abel." I say smiling now.

He smiles back sweetly. "I'm glad I met you too."

We continue talking about random things until we finally finish our shake.

Once we're done, Abel walked me home.

As soon as we got there, we stood by my front door facing each other.

"Thanks for the shake." I say.

"You're welcome."

"I'll see you at school tomorrow?" I ask.

He nods. "See you there."

Abel reaches over to gently pull me into a hug. The first hug he's ever given me.

It was unexpected and it caught me off guard, but without hesitation I hug him back tightly.

I don't want to let go of him, so when it ended I was disappointed.

"Goodnight Kai." He says gently pulling away from me.

"Goodnight Abel." I say in return.

He begins to make his way home, and I watched until he was out of sight.

As I made my way into the house Derrick nearly fell over when I swung the door open.

"Derrick what the hell!" I yell.

"I wasn't eavesdropping I swear." He says raising his hands up like he surrenders, but knowing damn well he is guilty.

I roll my eyes. "You're so annoying sometimes."

"And you're not?" He asks making a stank face at me.

"How?" I ask.

"You won't admit that you like Abel, but it's clear as daylight."

"There you go again with that." I say shaking my head from side to side.

"Just admit it." He goes on.

"Shut up." I say quickly making my way upstairs, and disappearing in my room.

Derrick stands in place laughing among himself knowing damn well he's right.
