Mary's POV
I was sitting in the car with Sammy while Dean hustled pool. I still have this stupid cast on but only for two more days just to make sure it healed. Dean walked out of the bar laughing and holding a wad of cash. "You know we could get day jobs once in a while." Sam said looking back at the newspaper. "Huntings our day job." Dean said. "Yeah and the pay's shit." I said. "Yeah, but hustling pool? Credit card scams? It's not the most honest thing in the world, Dean." Sam said. I rolled my eyes. "Well, let's see. Honest. Fun and easy. It's no contest. Besides, we're good at it. It's what we were raised to do." Dean said smirking. "How we were raised was jacked." I said. "Mae's right." Sam said. "Yeah, says you. We got a new gig or what?" Dean asked sitting down in the car. "Maybe. Oasis Plains, Oklahoma - not far from here. A gas company employee, Dustin Burwash, supposedly died from Creutzfeldt-Jakob." Sam said showing us it. "Huh?" Dean asked confused. "Explain what that is but in English this time?" I asked. "Human mad cow disease." Sam said. "Mad cow. Wasn't that on Oprah?" Dean asked. "You watch Oprah?" I asked raising an eyebrow. "So this guy eats a bad burger. Why is it our kind of thing?" Dean said changing the subject obviously embarrassed. "Mad cow disease causes massive brain degeneration. It takes months, even years, for the damage to appear. But this guy, Dustin? Sounds like his brain disintegrated in about an hour. Maybe less." I said remembering what I One time read at the library. "Okay, that's weird." Dean said now knowing this. "Yeah. Now, it could be a disease. Or it could be somethin' much nastier." Sam said. "All right. Oklahoma. Man. Work, work, work. No time to spend my money." Dean said. "Shut up and get a move on." I said to him. I had to stay in the car while Sam and Dean went to talk to a man named Travis. I just read my Tuck Everlasting book. Sam and Dean got back in. "Okay now to the crime scene." Dean and Sam drove there. We got passed police tape and looked down the hole. "Well, Sammy and I can't fit through." Dean said and looked at me. "Oh hell no." I said. "Please." Sam said looking at me. "Fine." I said. Dean tied a rope to me and Sam put a head light on me. Dean lowered and and I didn't see any tunnels just beetles. I inhaled dirt and went into a coughing fit. I pick one up and tugged the rope. I was pulled up and gave it to Sammy. "I'm never doing that again." I said to them glaring. "So you found some beetles. In a hole, in the ground. That's shocking, Mae." Dean said to me while Sam examined the beetle. "There were no tunnels, no tracks. No evidence of any other kind of creature down there." I said. "You know, some beetles do eat meat. Now, it's usually dead meat, but...." Sam said trailing off at the end. "Mae how many did you see down there?" Dean asked. "Ten or more." I said. "Well, we need more information on the area, the neighborhood. Whether something like this has ever happened before." Sam said. We were driving and got to an open house. "What?" Sam asked since we stopped. "I know a good place to start. I'm kinda hungry for a little barbeque, how 'bout you? What, we can't talk to the locals?" Dean asked reading the sign. "And the free food's got nothin' to do with it?" I asked. "Of course not. I'm a professional." Dean said. "Right." Sam said. We got out of the car and looked around. "Growin' up in a place like this would freak me out." Dean said looking around. I also felt kinda uncomfortable in a place that looked like something on tv. "Why?" Sam asked. "Well, manicured lawns, "How was your day, honey?" I'd blow my brains out." Dean said to us. "There's nothing wrong with "normal"." Sam said to Dean. "I'd take our family over normal any day." Dean said. "Plus normal is boring." I said. We knocked on the door. A man answered it. "Welcome." The man said. "Is this where the barque is?" Dean asked. "Yeah, not the best weather, but... I'm Larry Pike, the developer here. And you are... ?" Larry asked. "Dean. That's Sam and this is Mary." Dean said they shook hands. "Sam, Dean, and Mary good to meet you. So, you two are interested in Oasis Plains?" Larry asked Sam and Dean. "Yes, sir." Dean said. "Let me just say - we accept homeowners of any race, religion, color, or... sexual orientation." Larry said. I stifled a laugh since Larry thinks their gay and I'm their daughter. "We're siblings." Dean said. Larry looked embarrassed. "Our father is getting on in years, and we're just lookin' for a place for him." I said to him. "Great, great. Well, seniors are welcome, too. Come on in." Larry said. We walked in it looked nice and in the backyard. "You said you were the developer?" Sam asked. "Eighteen months ago, I was walking this valley with my survey team. There was nothing here but scrub brush and squirrels. And you know what, we built such a nice place to live that I actually bought into it myself. This is our house. We're the first family in Oasis Plains. This is my wife, Joanie." Larry said introducing his wife to us. "Hi there." Joanie said. "Hi." Dean said and shook her hand. "Hi, nice to meet you." Joanie said not knowing our names. "Sam, Dean, and Mary." Larry said. "Sam." Sam said shaking her hand. "Mary." I said shaking her hand. She nodded. "Tell them how much you love the place, honey. And lie if you have to because I need to sell some houses." Larry said making his wife laugh. "Right." Joanie said smiling. "Will you three excuse me?" Larry said leaving. "Don't let his salesman routine scare you. This really is a great place to live." Joanie said. A very energetic woman came up to us. If she was anymore energetic it would be the energizer bunny. "Hi, I'm Lynda Bloome, head of sales." Lynda introduces herself. "And Lynda was second to move in. She's a very noisy neighbor, though." Joanie said and left. "She's kidding, of course. I take it you two are interested in becoming homeowners." Lynda said to Sam and Dean. "Well...." Dean said. "Y-yeah, well...." Sam said. "Well, let me just say that we accept homeowners of any race, religion, color, or... sexual orientation." Lynda said thinking Sam and Dean are a gay couple and I'm their daughter again. "Right. Um... I'm gonna go talk to Larry. Okay, honey and sweetie?" Dean asked us. "Okay." I said smiling. Dean walked away smacking Sam on the ass. Lynda and Sam share an awkward silence I just rocked back and forth on my feet awkwardly. "We have a great school district." Lynda said to us. "I'm homeschooled miss." I said. "Oh well, who can say "no" to a steam shower? I use mine everyday." Lynda said. Okay, a steam shower does sound amazing. "Sounds great." Sam said not interested. I looked and saw a tarantula crawling out of boy's hand. "I'm going to look around." I said to Sam. "Okay Mae." He said. I walked over and got the tarantula and walked over to the boy. "This yours?" I asked him handing it to him. "You gonna tell my dad or your dad?" He asked me. "I don't know. Who's your dad, and that's not my dad that's my older brother." I said to him. "Yeah, Larry usually skips me in the family introductions." He said. "Ouch. First name basis with the old man - sounds pretty grim." I said. "Well, I'm not exactly brochure material." He said. "What's your name?" I asked curious. "Matt you?" He asked. "Mary." I said. "What happened to your hand?" Matt asked noticing my broken hand. "Well, I could say I got in a fight." I said. "You don't look like the type to fight." Matt said. "Okay true I broke it falling down the stairs at my house." I said. "Clumsy?" He asked. "Yeah." I said. "Matthew. I am so sorry about my son and his... pet." Larry said as him, Sam, and Dean walked over to us. "It's cool at least someone is near my age." I said. "Excuse us." Larry said walking away and pulling Matt away. "He reminds me of you Sammy." I said. "How?" Sam asked. "You and Dad never saw eye to eye." I said to them. "Dad never treated us like that." Dean said to us. "Well, Dad never treated you two like that. You two were perfect. He was all over my case. You don't remember?" Sam asked. I nodded remembering the screaming matches in a motel or in the impala. "Well, maybe he had to raise his voice, but sometimes, you were out of line." Dean said. "Like when Sam suggested I go to public school?" I asked raising an eyebrow. "Or, like when I said I'd rather play soccer than learn bowhunting." Sam said. "Bowhunting's an important skill." Dean said. "Whatever. How was your tour?" Sam asked. "Oh, it was excellent. I'm ready to buy. So you might be onto somethin'. Looks like Dustin Burwash wasn't the first strange death around here." Dean said. "What happened?" Sam and I asked. "About a year ago, before they broke ground, one of Larry's surveyors dropped dead while on the job. Get this severe allergic reaction to bee stings." Dean said. "More bugs." I said. Dean nodded. We were now in the impala Sam driving for once and Dean reading Dad's journal. "You know, I've heard of killer bees, but killer beetles? What is it that could make different bugs attack?" Dean asked. "Maybe there revolting?" I asked smirking. "Well, hauntings sometimes include bug manifestations." Sam said ignoring my comment. "Yeah, but I didn't see any evidence of ghost activity." Dean said. "Yeah, me neither. Mae?" Sam asked. "None, sorry." I said. "Maybe they're being controlled somehow. You know, by something or someone." Dean said. "You mean, like Willard?" Sam asked. "Yeah, bugs instead of rats." Dean said. "There are cases of psychic connections between people and animals - elementals, telepaths." I said. "Yeah, that whole Timmy-Lassie thing. Larry's kid - he's got bugs for pets." Dean said. "Matt?" I asked confused Matt seemed pretty normal and nice. "He did try to scare the realtor with a tarantula." Sam said. "He's also nice." I said. "Ooh, hey. Pull over here." Dean said pointing to an empty house. "What are we doing here?" Sam asked pulling in the driveway. "It's too late to talk to anybody else." Dean said. "We're gonna squat in an empty house?" Sam asked. "One that's illegal and two you just want to try out the steam shower." I said. "Mae's right. Come on." Dean said. Sam pulled in the garage. We got in. "May why don't you try it first." Dean said letting me shower. I showered loving the steam power on it. I changed in pajamas.
I got in one of the beds falling asleep comfortable. I woke up to Sam shaking me awake. "Another attack come on." Sam said. I sighed and got dressed for today.
It was cold out, I didn't care if it looked weird with my broken hand, it was now raining so I zipped up my jacket keeping my gun and knife on me. I saw Dean still had wet hair. "Did you ever leave the shower?" I asked. "No not really." Dean said. We got in the car and left we pulled up and Sam an umbrella over the two of us. "Hello. You're, uh, back early." Larry said noticing us three. "Yeah, we just drove in, wanted to take another look at the neighborhood." Dean said to him. "What's goin' on?" I asked even though I knew it was bugs. "You guys met, uh... Lynda Bloome at the barbeque?" Larry asked we nodded. "The realtor." Sam confirmed. "Well, she, uh... passed away last night." Larry said. "Sorry for your loss." I said sincerely to Larry. "Thank you Mary." He said. "I'm going to the car guys." I said to Sam and Dean. They nodded. I got to the car and waited. Soon they got in. "It's Matt." Dean said abs drove to the bus stop. I sighed and lied down in the backseat to take a nap. I woke up to Sam and Dean holding a human skull Matt following. "Hey guys is Matt controlling the bugs?" I asked getting out. "No he's not." Sam said. "Mary how come your not questioning a human skull?" Matt asked. "I've seen a whole dead body before, Matt." I said to him. He nodded. "Hey can I sign your cast?" Matt asked. "Sure but your kinda older then me." I said to him. "We're kinda friends." He said and took out a sharpie writing Matt on it. "Good luck Matt." I said. "You too Mary." He said. We got back in Sam and Dean went to talk to the guy at a university. We got in. "Let's go find a Native American." Sam said. "This is turning into a wild goose chase." I said. "You're telling me." Dean said. We got to the Oklahoma diner and found a guy playing cards. "Joe White Tree? We'd like to ask you a few questions, if that's all right." Sam said to him he nodded. "We're students from the university." Dean said. "No, you're not. You're lying, and she's too young." He said looking at me. "Well, truth is...." Dean said. "You know who starts sentence with "truth is"? Liars." Joe said to Dean. "Have you heard of Oasis Plains?" I asked. It's a housing development near the Atoka Valley." Sam said. "I like them. They're not lairs. I know the area." Joe said to us. "What can you tell us about the history there?" Sam asked. "Why do you want to know?" Joe asked us. "Something... something bad is happening in Oasis Plains. We think it might have something to do with some old bones we found down there - Native American bones." I said to him. " I'll tell you what my grandfather told me, what his grandfather told him. Two hundred years ago, a band of my ancestors lived in that valley. One day, the American cavalry came to relocate them. They were resistant, the cavalry impatient. As my grandfather put it, on the night the moon and the sun share the sky as equals, the cavalry first raided our village. They murdered, raped. The next day, the cavalry came again, and the next, and the next. And on the sixth night, the cavalry came one last time. And by the time the sun rose, every man, woman, and child still in the village was dead. They say on the sixth night, as the chief of the village lay dying, he whispered to the heavens that no white man would ever tarnish this land again. Nature would rise up and protect the valley. And it would bring as many days of misery and death to the white man as the cavalry had brought upon his people." Joe said. Wow okay that history is just messed up. "Insects. Sounds like nature to me. Six days." Dean said. "And on the night of the sixth day, none would survive." Joe said. Okay, now that's messed up. Dean, Sam, and I shared a look. We were walking back to the car. "When did the gas company man die?" Sam asked. "Uh, let's see, we got here Tuesday, so, Friday the twentieth." Dean said. "March twentieth? That's the spring equinox." I said. "The night the sun and the moon share the sky as equals." Dean said. "So, every year about this time, anybody in Oasis Plains is in danger. Larry built this neighborhood on cursed land." Sam said. "Not surprised." I said. "And on the sixth night - that's tonight." Dean said. "If we don't do something, Larry's family will be dead by sunrise." Sam said. "So how do we break the curse?" I asked as we got in the car. "You don't break a curse. You get out of its way. We've gotta get those people out now." Dean said. We nodded. Dean called Larry. "Yes, Mr. Pike, there's a mainline gas leak in your neighborhood." Dean said. "God, really? And how big?" Larry said since it was on speaker. "Well, it's fairly extensive. I don't want to alarm you, but we need your family out of the vicinity for at least twelve hours or so, just to be safe." Dean said. "And who is this, again?" Larry asked. "Travis Weaver. I work for Oklahoma Gas and Power." Dean said. "Uh-huh. Well, the problem is, I know Travis. He's worked with us for a year, so who is this?" Larry asked not happy. "Uh..." Dean said and I hung up. "Give me the phone." Sam said sand dialed a number. "Hello?" I heard Matt ask kinda panicked. I grabbed the phone. "Matt, it's Mary." I said to him. "Mary, my backyard is crawling with cockroaches." Matt said worried. "Matt, just listen. You have to get your family out of that house right now, okay?" Sam asked. "What, why?" He asked. "Because something's coming." I said. "More bugs?" Matt asked. "Yeah, a lot more." I said. "My dad doesn't listen in the best of circumstances, what am I supposed to tell him?" Matt asked. "You've gotta make him listen, okay?" I asked. "Give me the phone, give me the phone. Matt, under no circumstances are you to tell the truth, they'll just think you're nuts." Dean said. "But he's my-." Matt said but Dean cut him off. "Tell him you have a sharp pain in your right side and you've gotta go to the hospital, okay?" Dean said. "Yeah. Yeah, okay." Matt said. They hung up. "Make him listen? What are you thinkin'?" Dean asked me. "Hopefully their relationship won't end like Sam and Dad's." I shot back at Dean. We got to their house. "Damn it, they're still here. Come on." Dean said. We get out and Matt with Larry walk out. "Get off my property before I call the cops." Larry told us. "Mr. Pike, listen." I said. "Dad, they're just tryin' to help." Matt said. "Get in the house!" Larry yelled. Wow it's like Sam and Dad all over again. "I'm sorry. I told him the truth." Matt said to us. "It's fine Matt." I said smiling at him. "We had a plan, Matt, what happened to the plan?" Dean asked him. "Look, it's 12:00 AM. They are coming any minute now. You need to get your family and go, before it's too late." Sam said. "Yeah, you mean before the biblical swarm." Larry said sarcastically. "Larry, what do you think really happened to that realtor, huh? And the gas company guy? You don't think somethin' weird's goin' on here?" Dean asked him. "Look, I don't know who you are, but you're crazy. You come near my boy or my family again, and we're gonna have a problem." Larry said to us. "Well, I hate to be a downer, but we've got a problem right now." Dean said. "Dad, they're right, okay? We're in danger." Matt said. "Matt, get inside! Now!" Larry yelled. "No! Why won't you listen to me?!" Matt yelled ask. Definitely Sam and Dad. "Because this is crazy! It doesn't make any sense!" Larry yelled at Matt. "Look, this land is cursed! People have died here. Now, are you gonna really take that risk with your family?" I asked him. "Wait. You hear it?" Dean asked. We heard buzzing that kept getting louder. "What the hell?" Larry asked. I saw bugs getting killed by a bug light. "All right, it's time to go. Larry, get your wife." Dean said. "Guys." Matt and I said looking up seeing millions of bugs flying towards us. "Oh my God." Larry said. "We'll never make it." Sam said. "Everybody in the house. Everybody in the house, go!" Dean yelled. I grabbed Matt's hand dragging him in and locking the house. "Okay, is there anybody else in the neighborhood?" I asked Larry. "No, it's just us." Larry said. Good so we only have to protect them. "Honey, what's happening? What's that noise?" Joanie asked comin in. "Call 911. Joanie!" Larry yelled at his wife. "Okay." Joanie said going over to the phone. "I need towels." Dean said to them. "Uh, in the closet." Larry said. "Okay, we've gotta lock this place up, come on - doors, windows, fireplace, everything, okay?" Sam said to us. Matt and Sam went upstairs. "Phones are dead." Joanie said. "They must have chewed through the phone lines. And the power lines." I said. "I need my cell. No signal." Larry said. "You won't get one. They're blanketing the house." I said. "So what do we do now?" Larry asked. "We try to outlast it. Hopefully, the curse will end at sunrise." Sam said. "Hopefully?" Larry asked I shrugged with Sam. Dean comes back in with bug spray. "Bug spray?" Joanie asked. "Trust me." Dean said. "What is that?" Matt asked us. "The flue." I said. "All right, I think everybody needs to get upstairs." Dean said and a bunch of bugs a cake out and Dean sprayed them with the bug spray that caught on fire. "All right, everybody upstairs! Now! Go, go, go!" I yelled making everyone go upstairs. "You guys have an attic right?" I asked. "Yes." Larry said. "Good." I said and pulled the thing down and we all got up Dean pulling it closed. Soon sawdust fell down. "Oh, God, what's that?" Joanie asked. "Something's eating through the wood." Dean said. "Termites." Matt and I said. "All right, everybody get back. Get back, get back, get back!" Dean said and Matt pulled me behind him so I didn't get more hurt. Dean was spraying bug spray at them soon the sun was rising and the bugs left. "Well that was weird." I said. They nodded. We left to get our stuff and I could finally get this cast off. We pulled up to the Pikes and saw them leaving. "What, no goodbye?" Dean asked. "Good timing. Another hour and we'd have been gone." Larry said. I saw Matt throwing his big stuff away. "Hey throwing your bug stuff away?" I asked "After what I saw, yes. You got your cast off?" He asked noticing my arm. "Yeah, finally." I said. He nodded smiling at me. He kissed my cheek and I blushed a red. "A thanks for saving my life." He said. I smiled. "I have to save people daily." I said to him. "Well here's my number." He said handing it to me. "Mae, come on." Dean said. "Bye Matt." I said. "Bye Mary." He said waving. I got in. "Got his number?" He asked. "Yeah, but he's way older then me." I said. They nodded. "At least you no longer have a cast." Sam said. I nodded at him.
