This is gonna be a slight AU since in the game Alexios was Deimos since his childhood, but in this chapter Alexios is going to be kidnapped IN his childhood and raised and trained as Deimos. Just go with it yall lmao
-----------------
You were only children when he disappeared.
One day you were playing out in the fields on the outskirts of Sparta, the next your best friend vanished from your life. It certainly took a toll on your life, seeing Alexios every day when you were a child was almost like a therapy for you. But one day when you had came to the old apple tree on the hill, Alexios didn't meet you there that day. Or the day after that. Or the day after that. After a few weeks of waiting all day and into the night for him to meet you at the tree, you slowly lost hope that he would ever meet you there again. The days slipped by and turned into years, and you thought the memory of him would fade- but it never did. He was a lingering thought in the back of your mind, coming back ever so often during the day or night to keep his own memory alive.
You eventually moved out of your parents house and bought your own home in Sparta, always believing that some part of you would never leave the city. Your parents always said "once a Spartan, always a Spartan". You were born and raised on these grounds, and you would die for the city if it came down to it. But something in you always called out to Alexios, thinking in your mind that he himself was within Sparta somehow. Anywhere you went or looked, there was always something there to remind you of him. Whether it be small children chasing each other around the square or a vendor offering his finest array of apples and strawberries, you always seemed to circle everything around your childhood friend.
You tried to keep contact with Myrrine and stay up to date with her and how she was coping with the disappearance of her son, but even she eventually disappeared. Kassandra traveled the Greek world working as a mercenary, a job you never wanted to be a part of since you thought it was too dangerous for someone like you. You saw her every so often when she would return to Sparta to keep up with her childhood home since her mother hadn't returned. She told you one time when she had just returned from a small job in Megaris that she was looking for her mother, that she wouldn't stop until her family was reunited once again. She had found Nikolaus and learned that he wasn't her real father, and that was why she had to find Myrrine so she could get some answers. You all the while had listened without interrupting and waited patiently to give her your thoughts and prayers and wished her the best of luck, and that she would find her family.
But one day when you were walking back home from the market, you caught sight of the old oak tree on the hill where you used to meet Alexios. Your eyes fixated on the thin leaves still attached to the graying bark, one of the dead leaves falling off a branch and settling onto the ground. "Come with me." A feminine voice spoke from beside you, making you jump and snap back into reality of the present day. "Kassandra? Come with you where?" You asked your mercenary friend, spotting the spear of Leonidas resting comfortably on her back. "Where it all began." She only mumbled while keeping her honey eyes on the hill in the distance- the same hill you were looking at moments ago. "What? Why would I come with you?" You murmured, catching a glance of a figure standing on the hill in the distance. You could see the faint glimmer of golden armor blinking at you in the sunlight, a broad shouldered man adorining the sparkly looking armor. "I found him, Y/N." Kassandra whishpered, turning to you to see your shocked expression. You didn't know who she was talking about immediately, but after a moment the memory of him resurfaced again.
Alexios.
"You-you- you found him?" You stuttered, blinking repeatedly as if that would wake you from the dream you've always wished would become a reality. Kassandra took you by your hands and held them, looking you right in the eyes with total seriousness. "It's not him though. Our Alexios died long ago, or so my mother believes. But I think you can get through to him, at least I hope. I've tried, but he completely shut me out a long time ago." She explained, the memory of her little brother crossing her mind, seeing the tears welling in her big brown eyes caused the same thing to happen to you. "What makes you think I can get through to him? You're his sister." You murmured, a sniffle escaping you. Kassandra chuckled lowly and held her gaze with you, her eyes full of hope. "You've always had a deeper connection with him, Y/N." She whispered, knowing that you have always harbored a love for her little brother long before he disappeared. But when he did it was as if she knew your feelings of love grew and planted deep within you.
"I can try." You confirmed, the tears slipping from your eyes and falling down your rosy cheeks. Kassandra visibly relaxed and gathered you into a hug, her strong arms wrapping around you and the feeling of her friendship making you feel all warm and fuzzy. "Thank you." She breathed, a sigh passing her lips. She broke away from the hug, keeping her hands on your shoulders but holding you at arms length away. She smiled the lightest smile and turned away to walk up the path, expecting you to follow her up to the mountain. And you did, but your slow pace was nothing compared to her fast strides up the path. With the hot sun glaring down on you from its plalce in the sky, sweat began to accumulate on your brow as you had to take bigger steps to keep up with your mercenary friend. Wisps of your hair stuck to your forehead, the sweat accumulating on your brow coupled with the strands of hair testing your patience and driving you a bit mad. But the farther you walked up the path, the faster your heart began to beat and the more flips your stomach did.
It finally sunk in that this was the first time you were going to see Alexios in years, since your childhood. It didn't matter if it wasn't actually him, because you would do anything to get him back. You had so many questions for him, so many things to talk about and events that had happened in your life you wanted to talk to him about. You had hoped he would remember you, but from what Kassandra said about him not being himself, you pondered over what you would do after you got him back. Things would certainly be different and your life was going to change when you got to the top of the mountain.
When Kassandra slowed her pace in front of you, you knew you had reached the top. The off white columns stood high in the sky, planted into the ground way before any of you were even born. The ruins were old but had a certain vintage vibe about them, you always had a knack for that sort of thing. But what caught your attention was the man standing at the cliff's edge. His back was facing you, meaning you couldn't see his face, but you knew exactly who it was. Kassandra obviously knew who it was as well, because her hand came out to push you behind her protectively. "Stay out of his sight till I give you the signal." She whispered with her head turned slightly to look over her shoulder at you, keeping her eyes on Alexios at the same time. "Okay. Be safe, please." You mumbled to her, your hand coming to rest on her shoulder blade as a sign of comfort since she was about to go talk to her long lost sibling.
You positioned yourself behind a tree so that Alexios couldn't see you, knowing Kassandra would want the element of surprise more than anything. You watched her walk forward, her hand surprisingly not reaching for her Spear rested on her back, but instead positioned comfortably at her side, as if she was relaxed. Alexios must have heard the footsteps and slowly turned around to face Kassadra, now you were fully exposed to his face. He had aged, of course, but he certainly aged well. The defined muscles of his arms and those broad shoulders covered in the gold chestplate you saw earlier certainly suited him, but what the most painful thing to look at was how lifeless his eyes looked. Those big chocolate brown orbs that used to house mischeif and playfullness, now only held years of pain and sadness.
"Alexios, please." Kassandra pleaded, keeping her distance from both him and the cliff's edge. Alexios kept a straight face as he stared at her, absolutely no emotion on his sun kissed face. "You know who I am. The Cult is using you, brother." She continued, and finally a slimmer of anger broke through his stoic and reserved expression. "We have had this conversation before, have we not misthios?" He boomed, his deep voice startled you but you remained hidden. Although you couldn't see Kassandra's facial expression, you could tell all she wanted to do was give him a hug (A/N: same lol). He took a step forward threateningly, closing the space between him and Kassandra. "My answer is still the same. I don't know you, nor do I want to. Now, if we are done bantering back and forth, I'm going to drive my blade through your stomach." The menacing words that seeped through his mouth and out into the open air made your heart stop, your lungs no longer functioning properly and the crippling feeling of fear sneaking up on you. Kassandra seemed as if she barely registered his words, probably having heard his threats to kill her before when they met previously. But it was the first time you were hearing them, which was why it effected you so much. Seeing your childhood friend and possible love of your life after so long of wondering where he was made your heart pound in your chest, especially when he lunged at Kassandra. She easily dodged his attack, knowing he was gonna try something eventually. Alexios and Kassandra battled back and forth for what felt like hours, both the skilled warriors getting a good hit or two in at the other. But before long Alexios held Kassandra right at the cliff's edge, holding her by the throat and letting her gasp and claw for air.
"Alexios, don't!" You finally revealed yourself, stepping out from behind the tree that gave you coverage and rushed forward towards him, still keeping your distance though. Your arms were held out in front of you in surrender, trying not to set him off and drop Kassandra. His gaze turned slightly to look at you from over his shoulder, dismissing you as if you weren't important. "Go away, this doesn't involve you." He threw the comment over his shoulder, before turning his cold gaze to his sister, who was all wide eyed now that you had made your appearance. "Wait! You know me, Alexios. Please, just release Kassandra." You pleaded as the tears brimmed in your eyes, taking a step forward slowly and cautiously. He seemed to not move for a moment, Kassandra gasping and clawing at his arm to get some form of oxygen into her lungs.
In one fluid movement, Alexios had thrown her to the ground behind him and turned back to the view of Sparta in the distance. Kassandra gasped in air and held her hand to her throat, feeling the tender and swollen skin there from his iron grip. You rushed at her and joined her on the ground, carefully sneaking the spear from her back successfully and holding it behind your back. Your gaze was returned to the man standing at the edge still, abandoning Kassandra on the ground and stepping forward towards him. "Alexios." You muttered, knowing he was obviously still hostile and could break at any minute. He remained turned towards the city and frozen, not turning even when you got closer. But suddenly he turned and held his blade to your throat from afar, the blade never touching your skin. He glanced down to see the spear gripped tightly between your hands, his eyes widening and tears brimming. The sight of the blade was enough to get him to drop the blade at his side, his knees buckling under him and kneeling on the ground.
"I've done terrible things." He muttered, his gaze casted downwards at his knees. You slowly put the blade down on the ground beside you, gently placing it in the dirt and pebbles. "I don't care. You are still you, Alexios." Your words made him look up and meet your gaze, his brown eyes soft and full of a list of emotions. A tear rolled down your cheek, leaving a trail of salty water down your rosy cheek and dropping onto the fabric of your skirt. You wanted to wrap him in your arms and never let go, cradle him and rock all his bad memories away, but you had a feeling he wouldn't let you and push you away. But he was the one to move first, his hands slowly reaching out to ghost over your knee and thigh, moving up and resting on your bicep and feeling your smooth skin. Finally his arms wrapped around your shoulders and you gathered him into your arms, pressing his head into your neck and chest, absorbing him and reveling in the feeling of being able to touch him after so long. But before long the moment was ruined. Suddenly, he raised up and pulled out of your arms, looking at you how he looked at Kassandra a moment ago.
He ripped himself from your grasp and wrapped his hand around your throat, yanking you up off the ground kicking and screaming. "Alexios! Please!" You screamed as he pulled you over to the edge, making you hang over the edge. The only thing keeping you from falling was his grip around your neck, and even then your oxygen supply was slowly diminishing and your lungs screamed for air. "Alexios." You whimpered, your hands clawing at his forearm and desperatly trying to hold on. The menacing look was written over his face again, lips snarling and eyes wide with fury. You could tell he was about to drop you, his grip on your neck loosening slightly. And that's when it hit you. You were going to be flung from the top of Mount Taygetos by the man you loved.
"ALEXIOS, WAIT, PLEASE!" You shrieked, your throat getting scratchy and dry from screaming and pleading to him. You could barely register Kassandra try to get up out of the corner of your eye, knowing she wouldn't take the chance of a sneak attack and if she did, he would surely drop you.
"ALEXIOS!"
[ FLASHBACK ]
"ALEXIOS!"
Teenage you called after your best friend, heaving yourself up the hill towards your secret meeting spot. "Calm down, Y/N! I'm coming!" He yelled, annoyance ringing clear in his changing voice. The summer air of Sparta blew small wisps of hair onto your forehead, the beads of sweat forming there causing the hair to stick to the clammy skin. You looked up to see you were almost at the top, a wave of relief washing over you when you figured out you were close to not running anymore and could sit down once you reached the peak. "Hurry up, slow poke!" A rush of wind came flying past you, Alexios taking the lead of your little race and beating you to the top by only a few seconds. You huffed but reached the top a moment later, leaning over and putting your hands on your knees and your chest heaving down breaths. "Not. Fair." You wheezed between inhales of much needed air, thankful you could finally rest after running all that time. Alexios let out an amused chuckle, coming over to you and playfully slapping your shoulder with his big hand. "Ah, but it was fair. You were just too slow to beat me." He playfully remarked, boasting about his victory.
With a roll of your eyes you finally stood up straight when you thought you weren't gonna pass out, shoving his hand off your shoulder and giving him a funny look. "Don't give me that look, Y/N. You know I won, fair and square." He smiled wide, something only reserved for you and you only. You turned and walked towards the edge of the small cliff, a tall willow tree giving you and Alexios relief from the hot summer sun. The wind softly blowing through the air across the countryside, birds chirping, and your best friend at your side, it was peaceful to come up here every one in a while to get away from the stress of the real world. Leaning up against the old and aging tree, your aching feet finally getting some relief from running up the hill earlier when you tried to win the race. Alexios came to stand beside you, swinging an arm around your shoulder playfully. "You know what?" Alexios said after a moment of silence, not taking his deep chocolate eyes off the beautiful landscape in front of him.
You turned your head towards him, admiring the side view of his gorgeously crafted face. "What?" You asked, a small smile resting at your lips. "I wish we could stay in this moment forever." He said, finally tearing his eyes from the landscape to look into your eyes. "I wish we could too. I have a bad feeling that we aren't going to be able to come back here for a long time." You admitted, crossing your arms over your chest when a gust of wind got a little too chilly for you. Alexios hummed in understanding, probably having the same feeling you were. "I hope we can come back, though. I love this view, and I love sharing it with my best friend." He smiled, wrapping you into a bone crushing hug and drawing all the air from your lungs. You rolled your eyes but none the less wrapped your arms around his torso, shoving your face into his tunic.
"I love you, Alexios."
"I love you too, Y/N."
[ END OF FLASHBACK ]
As if he was struck by lightening, Alexios had remembered that day on the same cliff you were about to be dropped from. He was finally pulled from the trance the Cult had him in, the sparkle in his eyes returning when he remembered what you said. His eyes got all wide and he stumbled back like he was shot, but when he did his grip on you loosened and he couldn't catch you in time. You fell from the cliff, the wind tugging at your hair and making it whirl around you. "Alexios!" You screamed as you fell, fear gripping your heart and settling deep in your core. Strong arms wrapped around your waist, knowing it was Alexios and that he had jumped too to come save you somehow. But you knew it was too late and you could clearly see the ground fast approaching, so you did something totally stupid to someone else but not to you. You turned in his arms so that you were on the bottom and that when you did hit the ground, you would take the worst of it and perhaps even save his life.
[kinda 3rd person i guess lol]
When the ground eventually met with your bodies, you both exploded away from each other and tumbled down the small clearing at the foot of the mountain. Alexios tumbled away and eventually stopped rolling to land on his back, the armor he wore luckily cushioning most of his fall. But he could still feel the weight of the impact of the ground in his ribs, clutching onto them and groaning in pain. But he remembered what you did in the fall, trying to quickly get to his feet but still clutching his side in pain. "Y/N!" He shouted, his eyes wide and frantic, pants passing his lips with every second that went by. He glanced and stumbled around, looking everywhere for you. He finally spotted a body turned on their stomach a few feet away, immediately recognizing the mess of H/C hair and the outfit you were wearing. He stumbled over to you, falling to his knees when he got close enough and crocodile tears brimming his eyes. He was afraid to even touch your body in the fear that you would be limp and cold in his arms.
But when he did, his strong hands slowly came to ghost over the smooth skin of your face, his thumb caressing your scraped up cheek. "No, no, please. Y/N, wake up." He mumbled in some sort of trance, red rimmed eyes glancing over your face for any sign of life. But when there wasn't any, those tears brimming finally fell over and spilled down his rosy cheeks and into his scruff of beard. He gently moved you so that he was cradling you in his strong arms, wrapping you up and bringing your face close to his. "I'm sorry, Y/N. I remember, I remember everything. I remember you, just please wake up, please." He sobbed, the salty tears spilling down without stopping. Alexios looked over your face and memorized every detail while he could. Your eyes were secluded by your eyelids, your long eyelashes fanning out and curling at the ends. The way your nose was shaped, almost button like and when he was younger he remembered booping your nose and the small action annoying you.
"What have I done?" He looked to the clouded sky, as if he was looking and pleading to the gods for help. His voice was a hushed whisper against his lips, the wind carrying the words away in the breeze. His red rimmed eyes were wild with grief, his heart aching and his chest felt like it was being sat on. But when his broken gaze returned to your still form in his arms, he knew the gods had taken you from him. Maybe it was karma for all the years of killing and murdering for the Cult, or maybe just because it was your time. But he will always remember how you saved him, you saved more than his life. You saved HIM, his soul, you were the one thing that kept him grounded when the rest of the world was on fire. He would always turn to you, but he couldn't anymore. You were simply gone. He would never move on, never love anyone again like he loved you.
Because you were his only love.
