"I know I've broken the law multiple times before," Daire began, shooting a look at Stiles as they stood near the trees. "Stealing a police vehicle is a first though."
Stiles merely shrugged. "We needed a way to keep him from hurting anyone."
Daire raised an eyebrow, "and a van is going to do that?" she asked skeptically, gesturing to the van Jackson Jackass Whittemore was currently knocked out in. Daire had to punch him a few times throughout the night, which she did admittedly enjoy.
"It's our best chance," Scott told her reassuringly.
Daire sighed, "yeah, until Mr. Stilinski figures out we stole one of his department vans."
"Your faith in my plans is insulting," Stiles scoffed in annoyance.
Daire just gave him a sardonic look, "that's because your plans are stupid."
"Hey! They work sometimes!"
Daire shrugged, "okay your plans are stupid-most of the time."
Stiles smiled, "Why thank you-"
"Stiles! Daire! McCall!" Jackson's very annoyed voice screamed through the van. It echoed slightly and Daire visibly cringed. Wonderful, Sleeping Beauty's awake. "I'm going to kill you!"
Stiles, Scott and Daire glanced at each other unsurely. Daire slid her hands into her jean pockets, "Well at least he's not a lizard."
☾
Later, Stiles and Daire walked through the woods from his jeep. They had left to get a change of clothes and so Daire could let her family know that she 'unfortunately' was still alive.
"I don't see why we have to come back," Stiles groaned.
"Scott said we need to keep an eye on him and I agree," Daire shrugged. Sure babysitting a lizard man wasn't what she wanted to do, but she had Netflix and Supernatural to watch so it wasn't too bad. Stiles on the other hand had to dress a naked and unconscious Jackass, so he wasn't too thrilled.
They neared the van and Stiles pulled out the keys he had snagged from his dad's office. They were going to be so dead if Sheriff Stilinski found out. Like dead dead, not Vampire Diaries dead. Stiles unlocked the van and yanked one of the back doors open. Daire slipped in first, sliding across the metal bench. Jackass sat across from her, Stiles slid in next to Daire. He closed the door, about to say something when Jackass jolted in his seat.
"Let me go, now!" he screamed, lunging forward. Luckily, Daire had thought ahead and locked the cuffs connected to the van on his wrist. He only made it so far before the chains pulled him back.
Stiles tapped Daire's hand, which she had placed in front of him protectively, slowly she lowered her arm. "Hey, you know I put those pants on you, alright buddy? One leg at a time. You know, all up and personal with your junk! Wasn't exactly the highlight of my day, so don't think this is fun for me either."
Daire shrugged, "honestly I think you're a jackass but we're doing you a favor so you should be a bit more grateful."
"This is doing me a favor?" Jackson snarled, pulling against the handcuffs.
"Yes!" Stiles exclaimed. "You're killing people! To death! Yeah. And until we can figure out how to stop you, you're going to stay in here. I'm sorry."
Daire pulled out the sandwiches she had packed in her bag, "Now, do you want the chicken or the turkey club? The ham and cheese one is mine, so hands off."
"You seriously don't think my parents are going to look for me?" Jackson deadpanned.
Daire just took a bite out of her sandwich, she needed energy to deal with stupid.
"Not if they don't think anything's wrong," Stiles smirked.
Daire had no idea what was up his sleeve, she just hoped it was one of his not so stupid plans.
☾
Stiles was perfectly calm, feet up against the other bench as he told Jackson about the kanima. Daire sat indian style, watching her new tv addiction Supernatural.
"Scales?" Jackass repeated. "Like a fish?"
"No," Stiles responded, "more like a reptile. Um, and your claws have this liquid that paralyzes people. And you have a tail."
"I have a tail," Jackass repeated in a monotone voice. "Can it do anything? Like, could I use it to strangle you?"
Daire didn't bother looking up from her phone, "If I had a tail, I'd use it to strangle you."
"Daire not helping," Stiles sighed, "Okay, the night of the semi-final game. What did you do right after?"
Daire couldn't help but think back to holding up a paralyzed Derek in the pool. Ah, fun memories.
"I went home," he grumbled.
Daire looked up from her phone, "you sure about that Dr. Connors?"
"Yes," he snapped at her. "What the hell else would I do?"
Daire paused the episode and leaned forward, "you attacked us and Derek at the school and you trapped us in the pool. You also killed a mechanic in front of Stiles, and one of my family's hunters. Oh! and lets not forget how last night you tried to kill Danny."
Jackson rolled his eyes. "Why would I want to kill my best friend?"
"Well, that's what Scott's trying to figure out at the moment. While we get to babysit your pompous ass."
"Well, maybe he should figure out how to get a lawyer when I prosecute your asses all the way to jail!" he screamed.
Stiles sighed, his shoulders dropping. He looked like he wanted to murder Jackson. Not that Daire could disagree, the guy was a total asshole and was never able to see the whole picture. Like that time where he thought he could trust her Uncle. Heh, jackass.
"Alright, well tell me this Jackass," Daire quipped, "On the night of the first full moon, what happened?"
He grimaced, disappointment flashing through his eyes. "Nothing..nothing happened."
Daire sat back with a small grin as Jackass's face contorted. Trying to understand that nothing could have happened that night. He would have had to shift into something, if not a werewolf like he had originally planned.
And that something was a large reptile with paralytic claws, well wasn't that a ripoff.
Twenty minutes later, Daire and Stiles had left Jackson alone. He was still chained up and the back door to the van was closed. They were perfectly fine when it came to him not being able to kill anyone. They were leant up against the can while Stiles tapped away at Jackson's cell.
"Stiles, I feel like this is gonna be one of your stupid plans," Daire muttered as he sent what was either the third or fourth text of the day.
"Why?" he asked. "We have to make sure they don't think anything's up."
Daire shook her head. "Yeah, well you and Jackson don't talk the same, so it's more than likely your texts are ooc."
"ooc?" Stiles question was drowned out by a crunch of leaves and twigs. Daire immediately turned towards the back of the van, thinking that Jackson may have gotten out. Slowly Daire let her claws grow out, until she felt a pat on the shoulder.
Immediately she whipped around hand raised.
"They know!" Alison said, facing her cousin.
Daire lowered her hand, 'Wait, who knows what now?"
"They know Jackson's missing!"
"I've been texting his parents since last night, they don't know a thing," Stiles said with a shake of his head.
"Our grandfather told me his parents wen to the police," Allison said slowly. It had an undertone of panic. "They know."
Stiles gasped and looked down at the phone, before holding it by his fingertips at an arm's length. Daire groaned and rolled her eyes, taking the phone. Eyes scanning the messages. Her eyes widened as she read them, no wonder they went the police.
"Your texts were too ooc," she sighed, chucking the phone to the ground. "You told them 'I love you'. I don't know Jackass like at all, but he's not the type to tell his parents I love you."
"really?" Allison and Stiles exclaimed.
Daire shrugged. "yeah, perks of being able to feel others feelings."
"We have to get out of here," Stiles groaned. He ran a hand over his face. "The first place they're gonna think to check is here."
Allison and Daire nodded and Allison wrenched over the door to the van. There was barely enough room for three people, but they were going to have to make it work. Daire slipped in as Stiles got in on the passenger side. Allison plopped down next to Daire and shut the door. The two of them wedged together in the seat.
"You're tiny," Allison mumbled as Daire practically sat on her lap.
"Thank you genetics" Daire replied, she looked at Stiles. "So where do we go now?"
"Somewhere very far from here," Stiles replied, practically flooring it within seconds.
☾
"If Jackson doesn't remember being the kanima," Scott began as they walked towards the edge of the cliff. "He's definitely not going to remember stealing Danny's tablet."
So apparently, Danny said that Jackson and he were doing fine and that he was even doing a favor for the Jackass. He had been recovering a video for him and Scott literally jumped at the chance to get it. But it was too late; someone had already broken into Danny's car and beat him too it.
"Why would he steal the thing if he doesn't even know what's on it?" Stiles deadpanned, his arm making rapid hand motions.
"What if someone else took it?" Allison questioned.
"I have a feeling that someone else did take it. Which would mean that someone else knows what he is. Meaning that there is someone in Beacon Hills with the knowledge that the lacrosse co-captain turns into a giant murderous reptile," Daire sighed. "Ah hell."
"Someone could be protecting him," Scott said after a few seconds.
"Yeah, like the bestiary says the kanima seeks a friend, right?" Allison pitched in.
Stiles cut in. "Alright, hold on. So somebody watches Jackson make a video of himself turning into the kanima and then just erases part of it so he wouldn't know? Who would do that?"
"The only thing we found online about it was that it goes after murderers," Allison began, "maybe that's actually true and someone's just protecting it because he's doing good?"
"Can't be, it tried to kill you guys remember? And it's not like it's singled me out." Daire put in.
Scott shook his head. "I don't think it was actually trying to kill us," he said, before looking at Allison. "Remember at Isaac's house? It went right by us, didn't it?"
"Yeah, it just ran off," she confirmed after a moment.
"And it didn't kill you at the mechanics garage," he told Stiles.
"Yeah, but he tried to kill us and Derek at the pool," Stiles interrupted.
Daire shook her head. "That doesn't make sense. Right before I jumped in the pool, it was literally two feet away from me. If it wanted to kill me, it could have and it technically has the right to. Plus he left Erica unconscious on the side of the pool."
"It was waiting for us to come out!" he exclaimed.
"What if it was trying to keep us in?" Daire questioned.
Stiles mouth opened into a little 'o' shape. "Why do I feel so violated all of a sudden?"
"Because there's something else going on. We just don't know what that something is yet. But whatever it is, we have to stop it. And as much as it pains me to say this, Jackass has to live."
☾
"Well, this is boring," Stiles muttered as they sat in the front of the van.
Day melted into night and they had parked near the edge of the reserve, just looking over the peak. Daire leaned against the window, she was now on the musical episode of Supernatural, and man was it amazing. Jackson was still in the back of this vehicle and Allison and Scott had wanted alone time, so they were in Allison's car. And Daire had no desire to know what they were doing.
"Oh well," Daire muttered eyes glued on the screen as Wayward Sons started playing. "We're lizard-sitting, it's not supposed to be as fun as it sounds."
Stiles just let out an exasperated noise and slouched in his seat.
Thump.
Thump.
Crash!
Daire looked up from her phone, "What the hell was that?"
"I have no idea, but I have a feeling we're gonna regret getting out of the car," Stiles muttered.
Daire sighed and got out of the car, shoving her phone in her back pocket. She quickly made her way around the front of the van, standing beside Stiles. Stepping in front of him, she put a finger to her mouth and crept to the back.
The back door to the van had been broken open. It swung back and forth with a tiny squeak. The chains that were holding Jackass were broken from the wall and lying on the ground. Jackass was nowhere to be seen. Daire glanced at the amount of ooze dripping off the doors and it wasn't hard to guess that he didn't break out as a teenage dickwad.
Stiles groaned, "my dad is going to kill us..."
Looking at the wreck in front of her, Daire couldn't help but hear
Dean Winchester's famous "Son of a bitch" and she couldn't agree more.
☾
"Can you buzz us in? I gotta see my dad," Stiles said to the guy working the desk at the Beacon Hills Police Department. The man sighed, but nonetheless opened the door.
"Are you sure you wanna do this?" Daire asked. After they left the preserve, Allison went home and Daire avoiding her family indefinitely joined Scott and Stiles. And Stiles had the conviction to tell his dad everything, like werewolf everything.
"I'm gonna have to," he sighed.
Scott nodded. "It's gonna be okay. We'll help."
Daire nodded, it was getting harder to keep up the lies. Plus it'd be easier if they had an adult other than her family that knew everything. She just hoped they would get to him before Jackson did, because that would not end well.
But apparently it was not meant to be. For when they neared the Sheriffs office, they were met with the sight of what was possibly the worst outcome.
Jackass was sat down, dressed in what looked like a spare police uniform. His father, leant up against the wall. This wasn't looking good. Jackson merely smirked at Daire and the boys and Papa Stilinski appeared with a very unhappy look on his face.
"Scott, Daire, Stiles," he greeted, Daire could feel his agitation rolling off his body. "Perfect timing. Have you met Jackson's father, Mr. David Whittemore, esquire."
Jackass with a smug grin covering his face, "that means lawyer."
Son of a Bitch indeed.
