Jordie's POV:
I got home home from school a little later than usual. I'd been walking through the woods with some mates and didn't get home until 5:30. I knew my mum would be annoyed so I decided to try and sneak into my room unnoticed.
I was walking up the drive when I saw that there was an extra car in the driveway. My first thought was that it might be Darius's. He's my stepdad. Well kind of. He and my mum are on and off all the time. They officially broke it off two years ago but he's always around with her and it's so annoying. I don't really like Darius. He's only nice to his kids - my sister Amalia and brother Cameron - and completely ignores me and my other brother Kymal. I wish he would just leave so mum could move on.
Anyway, after closer inspection, I found that it wasn't his. I was curious because we don't often have visitors, and I was also relieved because it might be easier to sneak in. Quietly, I slipped my key into the lock, opened the door and tiptoed into the house. Slipping my shows off, I crept up the stairs, avoiding all the spots I knew would creak. I could hear low voices coming from the kitchen so I kneeled down at the top of the stairs and looked into the room. Mum was stood up, sipping a cup of tea and talking to someone. I couldn't quite see who it was so I leant over the bannister to get a look. It was a tall woman with blonde hair; she looked like she might be in her late 40s or 50s. I didn't recognise her and she didn't look like the type of woman that would be friends with my mum. Just as I was about to leave, I heard my mum say something interesting.
"Jordan has no idea who he is."
Confused, I listened in.
The woman spoke, "I guess that's good. It's better if they both find out at similar times."
What the hell were they on about?
"When do you think you're going to tell him?" continued the woman.
"Soon. I'm sure he can handle it but I'm not sure that I can handle him being mad at me for it. He's got a right to know though. I want him to know who his dad is."
Dad.
Not a word that rolled easily off my tongue. I'd never known who my dad was. All I knew is that he wasn't Kymal's dad and it was DEFINITELY not Darius. I'd never been one to ask too many questions about him because I'd learnt pretty quickly that my mum wasn't going to tell me. Either she didn't know who he was or much about him, or she did not want to tell me. I bit my lip in anticipation. Was I finally going to find out who he was? Unfortunately for me, it was at that moment that I heard possibly the loudest sound ever.
Creakkkkkkkkkk.
Immediately, I saw my mum look up and see me. Panicked, I quickly raced up the stairs and into my room.
"JORDIE!' My mum yelled. I ignored her.
"JORDIE COME HERE!"
"JORDAN! JORDAN I'M NOT ASKING YOU, I'M TELLING YOU. COME HERE RIGHT NOW!"
Angrily, I kicked open my door and trudged downstairs. My mum was at the bottom of the staircase, looking increasingly annoyed.
"What the hell Jordie?! I thought I'd told you not to eavesdrop?" I ignored her and she let it slide, leading me into the kitchen. The woman was still sat at the table. She was holding a mug of tea and, up close, she looked very warm and friendly. She smelled of lavender and was smiling at me. I smiled back.
"This is Wendy." Said my mum.
"Hi Wendy." I said.
"Hi."
"Jordie, there's something I need to tell you," my mum continued, "and it's quite important. You might want to take a seat."
Reluctantly, I sat down.
"Wendy is your grandma."
I blinked a few times and looked at Wendy. Here was my grandma, sat in front of me. I couldn't believe it. Rubbing my face in confusion, I turned to my mum.
"What's going on?" I asked.
And she told me. About getting pregnant with me at 17, about how she and my dad were broken up and he'd moved away, about how she'd never told him of my existence - something which she now knew to be a terrible decision and one which she deeply regretted. She told me of how she reached out to Wendy, my dad's mother, in an attempt to make contact with my dad. And now Wendy was here and my dad knew about me. After 13 years of life, I was finally going to meet my dad. I didn't know whether to get angry, laugh or cry. So, I just did all three.
"How could you not tell me mum?! How could you not tell him?! I've spent my whole life thinking my dad abandoned me, that he didn't care, and it was all a lie! I've had to grow up without a dad, thinking that I must be pretty worthless to have just been discarded by him, when all along you knew about him and you had the power to change that. I can't believe you."
Mum had tears in her eyes and I felt a pang of guilt, but I was too upset to stop.
"You know it's funny," I laughed, "for a long time, I've thought up elaborate ideas as to why he might've left and in the end, he didn't leave at all."
"Jordie I-"
"You can explain can you? Save it - I don't want to hear it. I'm going to my room. Leave me alone." I stormed upstairs, tears streaming down my face. I could hear my mum crying and Wendy trying to calm her down. I didn't care.
It was four hours later when my mum came back into my room. Wendy had left hours ago, I hadn't gone down for tea and mum hadn't come up to see me. When she finally did, she slowly walked into the room and sat down on my bed. I ignored her.
"Jord, I know you're angry with me right now and you have every right to be. I'm so, so, so sorry and if there was anything I could do to change what I did, I would. But I can't, so I'm trying to make amends now and I would love it so much if you could help me."
I turned and looked at her but didn't say anything.
"Please Jordie, I know I don't deserve your forgiveness right now but I'm still your mum and that hasn't changed, no matter what I've done."
We sat in silence for about 10 minutes before she got up to leave. That was when I spoke.
"Wait." She turned round and looked at me, hopefully.
"I understand what you did and why, and I'm willing to forgive you because you're my mum and I love you." There were tears in her eyes. "However, there is one condition. I want to know who my dad is." My mum smiled and nodded, before speaking.
"Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain."
And that was the beginning of my story.
