"Are you sure you're going to be okay?" My mom asked, tugging on my black lace, sparkling dress. I was glad it stopped above my knees for some reason. I didn't really like long dresses. I decided to go to the Masquerade party anyway. It's something Jace would've wanted me to do. It's been a week since he died, and his funeral is this weekend. So, I was going to try to have as much fun for the both of us.
"I promise I will," I smile sadly, adjusting my black glittering mask on my face. There was a small black feather that stuck out from its left side, which made more beautiful,"Beast Boy's coming in a sec. How do I look?" I brushed down my dress and smiled at her.
"Absolutely stunning." She pulled me into a hug, sniffling on my shoulder.
Moms, am I right?
"Don't do anything I wouldn't do." She joked in my ear. My cheeks flushed scarlett. Before I could retaliate, there was a knock on the door.
"Oh, that's him." I grinned and kissed her cheek,"Bye mom, love you." I pulled open the door, and watched as his eyes widened. His eyes trailed over my body with his smile reaching ear to ear,"Hey."
"Hey," he smiled,"You look beautiful." He took my hand and tried to help me off the porch. Something, I didn't need, so I pulled away, grabbed the ends of my dress and hopped off, "Independence. I like it." I shook my head and laughed,"Are you sure you want to go to this party? I mean, I've got my mask and everything, but it's not to late to turn around." He says.
"I'm okay.. it's," I started, shrugging my shoulders,"It's something he would've wanted me to attend. So, yeah let's do this!" I lifted my fist in the air. He smirked and pulled me into a hug. We climbed into the car, him wanting to drive for the first time,"Do you even know how to drive?" I asked.
He nodded. Then looked down, and shook his head. Wow.
"Put on your seatbelt, goofball." I chuckled, hooking myself in, too. He struggled with the strap, so I reached over and grabbed the strap. Problem is, I leaned over too far and fell face first into his lap. And by his lap, I mean..
"I could get used to this," he laughed, sticking out his tongue, I jumped up, my face as red as ever, and hooked him in. He was laughing so hard, I saw tears forming in his eyes. I punched his shoulder.
"Come on, dude." I huffed, putting the car in drive so he could pull off. He pressed on the gas, and then the brakes, launching me forward.
"And this is why we wear seatbelts," he smiled. I punched his arm harder.
"Drive, man." He shook his head with a laugh and pulled into the street, driving off towards the party.
Surprisingly, we got there in no time. The party committee really went all out. There were tons of balloons surrounding the columns on the outside. Each of them either a light pink, a soft blue or a purple. Lights blasted from each of the small glass panes that covered half of one of the walls in the gym, and the music was something teens actually listened to. I stepped out of the car, Beast Boy taking my hand once again, and we walked into the party together. I was absolutely flabbergasted. Glittery blue and purple streamers hung from the ceiling, On stage, a bright red spotlight shined down on whoever would be up there speaking. Lights above us flickered all different colors. There was a long food table on one side, and the other side was a dance floor. There was plently of room to do many things. There was even a chocolate fountain!
"This is...wow." Beast Boy breathed, just as amazed as I was. I bobbed my head to the beat of the music, immediately recognizing the song.
Oh, oh
Can we take it nice and slow slow?
Break it down and drop it low, low
'Cause I just wanna party all night in the neon lights til you can let me go
I just wanna feel your body right next to mine
All night long...
"Baby, slow down the song," I sung, dancing to the beat of the music. I pulled Beast Boy out to the dance floor, swaying my hips lightly. He grinned, following my lead. He took my hand, twirled and dipped me, then brought me back up. I paused in shock, my face flushing,"I didn't know you could dance like that.."
"I've learned from the best." He shrugged.
"Who?"
"Myself." He gave a sly smile, sticking out his tongue. I grinned, hitting his shoulder lightly. We danced for a while until the song ended.
"Alright Ladies and Gentlemen. You heard Selena Gomez. Let's slow it down," the DJ announced, putting a disk into the large DJ station. The song was calming. Again, I knew what it was.
Just close your eyes
The sun is going down
You'll be alright
No one can hurt you now
Come morning light
You and I'll be safe and sound
Don't you dare look out your window, darling.
Everything's on fire
The war outside our door keeps raging on
Hold on to this lullaby
Even when the music's gone
Gone..
I put my forehead on his shoulder, breathing in his boyish scent. It was weird that all guys had the same smell to me. I felt his arm tighten around my waist, and his grip on my hand soften. He was trying to comfort me.
"Thank you," I mumbled. I felt him stiffen.
"For what?" He quizzed, breathing into my hair. Surprisingly, no one knew it was him. Even if he was the only green person here.
"I dont know.. for everything. For being there for me." I rested my head on his shoulder, feeling that familiar lump in my throat.
"Well, I kind of did owe you," i could hear the smile in his voice. I kissed his cheek and pulled away.
"If you say so, sweetheart," I joked. I stared down at my feet, nervous that I'd step on his accidentally,"You can take a break if you want. I'm gunna go get us something to drink," I nodded over to the punch table and smiled weakly. He nodded, letting me go. I pondered over, pouring us both a glass. I was so lost in thought, I didn't realise someone on the side of me.
"Quite a stare you got on that punch, there." I jumped, my hand shaking and spilling punch all over my hand,"Woah woah, sorry. Didn't mean to scare ya." A girl stood beside me with a grin, her white mask really covering her face. She had her bronze hair pulles in a bun,"I'm Natalie."
"Isn't this supposed to be a Masquerade party?" I question, with a smile. She slapped her forehead and scolded herself.
"Damn it, Nats. Always fucking something up!" I laughed a little, pouring her a glass and handing it to her.
"It's alright. I'm (Y/n). "
"Nice to meet you. So, you came alone?" She asked. I shook my head.
"Oh, no. My.. my date is over there waiting for me actually." She nodded her head in approval, once she saw him.
"Quite a date you grabbed. Never seen him before." She turned back to me,"You two are cute."
"Thanks... He doesn't go to this school..so, yeah." She nodded her head again.
"Welp, it's almost time for me to announce the winners of Winter. Heh. Maybe we should hang sometime. "
"You're a host?" I asked. She nodded.
"Yeah I kind of just you know, signed up to get noticed and all that junk."
"Oh cool. Yeah. We should.. we should hang out sometime." I grinned, picking up my two cups,"Bye Nat."
"Bye, (Y/n)!" She waved. I maneuvered my way back to Beast Boy handing him his cup. I didn't notice the song had changed till now.
"Who was that you were talking to?" He quizzed. I shrugged.
"A girl. She's pretty cool."I took a seat on the sidelines with him, and we sipped our punch together,"It kind of tastes funny."
"Yeah." He set down his glass,"You feeling okay."
My vision became a little blurry. I shook my head to get it back to normal,"Yeah. I'm.. fine."
"Ladies, gentleman! Boys and girls!" Natalie walked on stage, tapped the mic and smiled,"Is this thing on?" She got a couple of laughs,"Great! I'd now like to announce the winners of Winter!" I heard a long beep in my ear. Like, a monitor going off,"This year's Winter Queen is.." I couldn't hear anymore. The only thing in my ears was the pounding of my heartbeat.
"(Y/n).." Beast Boy's voice was slurred,"You're...aying..-N)!"
"Hm? I'm sorry.." I mumbled, rubbing my head,"I zoned out for a second,"
Sure you're sorry.
"What?" I asked him.
"I didn't say anything. Are you sure you're okay?" Beast Boy asked. I nodded slowly.
You called me a piece of trash. You never apologized for that.
I didn't notice I was standing up till I was at the entrance of the party,"(Y/n)? Where are you going?" He asked.
Kill yourself. Join me in Heaven. I'm lonely, (Y/n).
"I'm sorry, Jace.." I spoke. Beast Boy shook me.
"Hey. Babe! Answer me. (Y/n)?"
"I should do it." I grin,"He's lonely."
"Who?"
"Jace. Who else?"
"(Y/n)? What are you-" he didn't finish his sentence, because I was already sprinting into the darkness of the night.
