I woke up to someone talking.
"This is the first time I've seen you take an interest in someone, Steven." Wallace's voice came.
"I..."
"Don't try to hide it I know the truth." My heart started pounding.
"Wallace, I just met her, but I don't know. There's something different about her."
Was he talking about me?
"I know what you mean. But you won't get anywhere if you don't tell her." I heard someone coughing like they were choking on water.
"I can't tell her...what would she think?"
"Again you won't know unless you ask."
"But..."
"No buts, when she wakes up you tell her the truth." A door opened and then closed. My heart was going nuts in my chest. I slowly opened my eyes. Steven came into view.
"Kat, how are you feeling?"
"Okay..." My voice was a little raw.
"That's good. Nurse Joy said she couldn't find anything wrong that would cause the fever, but its gone now." He explained.
"I see..." Then what was the voice I heard?
"There's something I have to tell you though." He trailed off nervously.
"Yes?" He looked at me and then turned away sharply.
"I..." The door opened and Umbreon jumped up onto the bed. I smiled brightly.
"Umbreon!" She snuggled into my lap, closing her eyes. The nurse came rushing in quickly.
"I'm sorry, I couldn't stop her from running in here." I chuckled.
"Sounds like Umbreon, I'll be alright with her in here." She nodded and left the room without another word as she saw the tension between Steven and I. "You were saying?" I continued. My heart was starting to pound again as he looked at me again.
"I was going to say that I was wondering if you'd like to-" A loud bang sounded from outside the room.
"You can't be back here!" Nurse Joy yelled after whoever was outside my door. The person opened the door and Ash was standing there panting and out of breath.
"Ash?!" I said shocked.
"Kat, I heard that you were here from Wallace. Is everything alright?" I nodded.
"I'm fine, just a fever." I said lightly and looked at Steven who had made his way to the open doorway.
"I'll give you two some space." I sighed as he walked out of the room.
"Wasn't that Steven?" Ash asked.
"That's correct."
"Then why was he here?"
"We're friends..."
"Really?"
"Yes."
"Are you sure everything is alright? You don't sound like you're feeling well still." I got up out of the bed. Umbreon had jumped out of my lap when Ash stormed in.
"I'm fine." I opened the window and looked out at the beautiful city that was Sootopolis. "Can you give Steven a message for me?" I asked, not turning to look at him.
"Sure, but aren't you going to be seeing him soon anyways?"
"Tell him I'm sorry." I returned Umbreon and changed into an Absol, jumping out the window quickly.
"Kat!" I heard Wallace call out from outside of the hospital. I stopped and saw Steven standing there with him. I frowned and then jumped into the water changing into a Vaporeon mid-air. I swam down into the water and away from the one who was making me feel some weird way.
~
Once I was far away from Sootopolis I changed back to normal on dry land. I collapsed to the ground as Umbreon came out of her pokeball angrily.
"You could have given me some more warning if you were planning to put me in there you know!" She growled sharply. I shivered as she yelled.
"I'm sorry Umbreon..." I said softly and she seemed to notice something was wrong.
"This is about Steven isn't it?" I nodded.
"I can't be around him..."
"Why not?"
"Because..."
"Because you like him more than a friend?" She asked suddenly.
"Yes..."
"What's wrong with that?"
"Everything is wrong with that."
"Why though?"
"Because, then I would admit that I need someone else more than I need my Pokemon, my friends. I love you all more than anything in the world and that includes Steven."
"Then there's not a problem, you understand who you love more. So why are you running from him?"
"Because I can't love him..."
"Why?"
"Look at me Umbreon! I'm a monster, an error in genetic coding, nothing good will come from him being with me!" I said as tears stained my clothing. The salty taste making me think more about the sour situation.
"Kat...you aren't a monster..."She muttered gently.
"Then why do I feel like one, I will never be good enough for this world...Why did this all happen to me? I didn't ask for any of this, but here I am and here I am a monster still. I love being able to talk to you and be able to understand everything happening with you guys, but..." I looked up at the sky. "It's not normal...I'm not normal and I never will be..."
