The Anteiku workers were all in the staff room. Sadness could be seen in everyone's eyes, and tears were rolling in Touka's eyes, but she refused to let then out. Finally, Kaneki broke the silence.
"I'm sorry..... if I was stronger, I could've saved Ryouko-san...." Said Kaneki, looking down. "It's not your fault, Kaneki." Said Nishiki, a waiter here who Kaneki seldom talked to. "He's right, Kaneki-kun. It wasn't your fault." Said Yoshimura.
"It was no one's fault, Kaneki-kun. This is just fate, and we can only obey it. Now, the most important thing is to lead Hinami-chan out of the darkness. She has to overcome it. I'll let her live here from now on, and everyone, I beg you, make every effort to help the young girl walk out of the pain. She's already suffered too much." Yoshimura said.
"But--"
"Kaneki!! It wasn't your fault!!" Touka stood up and slapped him, and went out of the room. "Touka-chan!!" Kaneki shouted and went after her. He knew she wasn't blaming him, she was just upset, frustrated, and sad. He went upstairs, and saw Touka sitting at her door.
"She's in there sleeping." Said Touka. She buried her face into her hands. "Why.... why does Hinami-chan have to suffer this much?? She's already lost her father, now Ryouko-san is gone forever.... what should she do?? What should we do??" She croaked, shaking.
"Touka-chan...." He wrapped his arm around Touka's shoulder, and held her hands and squeezed them. "I know it hurts, I think we all do. But let's put it aside now. Let's help Hinami-chan, she needs us. She has no one now." Said Kaneki. He felt tears running down his cheeks too. He hugged her even tighter, and she dozed off, and after a while, he fell asleep too.
The next they they held a quiet funeral. Anteiku was closed, and everyone was dressed in black, and the atmosphere was gloomy. Hide and Yoriko attended the funeral and tried to make Hinami feel better, but it was no use, she was sobbing and holding Touka's hand very tightly the whole day. In the evening, they returned to Anteiku, and Hinami went up stairs without saying a word.
"Good night, everyone." Said Yoshimura, and he made everyone a cup of coffee. Everybody thanked him and left. "Good night, Yoshimura-san." Said Touka. He nodded and she went up stairs.
"Hinami-chan?" Said Touka when she got to her room. Hinami was in her room. "Hinami-chan? Do you want anything to eat?" Touka opened Hinami's door slightly. She was in her bed. "No, thank you, onee-chan." Said Hinami, covering her head with her blanket.
"Hinami-chan, I--"
"Onee-chan, can you... please let me be alone for a while?" Said Hinami. Touka knew she was trying to stop herself from sobbing. "...Okay, if you say so. Good night, Hinami-chan." Said Touka, closing the door. "If there really is God, I beg you, please, rescue her." She preyed.
It had already been a week since Hinami's mother's funeral, and it was ten days to Kaneki, Hide, Yoriko, and Touka's first monthly exam. Kaneki took his day offs when it was five days to the exams, and he brought his books to Anteiku and studied with Hide there everyday after school. He helped Hide with the subjects that he wasn't good at, on the other hand, they were thinking about how to help Hinami.
"Kaneki, I really don't know. I really want to help Hinami-chan, but I just don't know how!" Said Hide, scratching his head. "Me neither. Every time I try to talk to her, she locks herself in the room." Said Kaneki, and he sighed.
"I think the only time to talk to her is when she eats dinner." Said Kaneki, and Hide sighed. "Yeah, I guess. Watching a little girl crying the whole day is horrible, I really hope she can overcome the pain soon." Said Hide, and he stood up.
"Well, thanks for the teaching, Kaneki. I think I won't fail the tests now." Said Hide, and he left. "Okay, see you tomorrow." Said Kaneki, and he looked at his watch.
7 : 23 p.m.
"It's already this late. I should bring Hinami-chan her dinner." He muttered, and he went to the kitchen and made a plate of spaghetti and a cup of hot chocolate and went upstairs. He knocked on Touka's door.
"Come in." Said Touka, not looking away from her textbook. "Hey Touka-chan, I brought Hinami-chan her dinner." Said Kaneki, and Touka looked at her watch. "Oh damn, I forgot, thanks, Kaneki." Said Touka. Kaneki nodded and went to Hinami's room.
"Hinami-chan, may I come in?" He asked. "Yes." Said Hinami, and he opened the door. "I brought you your dinner." Said Kaneki, smiling. "Thank you, onii-chan." Said Hinami. "No problem." Said Kaneki. "Hinami-chan, can--"
"Onii-chan, can I talk to you?" Asked Hinami, hugging her knees to her chest. Kaneki was surprised. "Yes, of course." Said Kaneki, and he sat down on her bed.
"What do you want to talk about, Hinami-chan?" Asked Kaneki, and she took out a book. "This book, The Beautiful Tragedy, written by Suzume Shin (that's me, I thought it's a cool name, hehe), the main character in this book has the same fate as me." Said Hinami. Kaneki was listening.
"Both her mom and dad died. She saw nothing in the future, and she killed herself after she took her revenge." Said Hinami. Kaneki was a bit nervous now, he didn't want her to have the thought of suicide. "I was thinking, would it be easier if I just end my--" Suddenly Kaneki grabbed the book and threw it away and hugged Hinami very tightly.
"Hinami-chan! Do not ever say that again! I shouldn't have brought that book, it was my mistake. Everyone's life is precious, it's invaluable! No one was born to be alone, Hinami-chan! You still have me, have Touka-chan, have Hide, have Yoriko-chan, have Yoshimura-san, have everyone here at Anteiku! Do not ever say that again!!" Said Kaneki, still hugging her. Hinami froze for a few second, and then nodded firmly. Kaneki let go.
"I'm sorry." Said Kaneki, and he handed her her hot chocolate. She took a sip and took out her notebook. "Onii-chan, can I show you something?" Asked Hinami. "Yeah, sure, what is it?" Said Kaneki, and she opened her notebook and flipped to a page. It was a sketch of him, herself, and Touka. They were all smiling, and he and Touka were holding hands, and hugging Hinami on the both sides.
"I was drawing this for the whole week. I want to thank you, but I don't know how. You have done so much for me, but I was isolating myself, refusing to see you. I'm sorry, I just miss mom and dad too much." Said Hinami, wiping the tears away.
"Hinami-chan, we aren't mad at you at all." Said Kaneki, she looked up. "Let me tell you a story of mine. My father passed away when I was at your age, and I was very, very sad at that time. Do you want to know how I got through the pain?" Hinami nodded. "Did you read a lot?" Asked Hinami. Kaneki shook his head. "Well, I did read a lot, but the thing that really helped me was paper airplanes." Said Kaneki.
"Paper airplanes??" Asked Hinami blankly. "Yes, paper airplanes. I wrote down my thoughts, the frustration, how much I missed my dad, anything that could help me feel better. I wrote them on paper airplanes, and I went to the roof, and threw them to the sky. I kept throwing and throwing until I felt better, and I knew dad wouldn't like to see me cry all day, so I told myself, walk out of the pain, and have a better life, and then dad'll be happy. That's what I did." Said Kaneki. Hinami nodded and ripped the page that had the sketch off.
"Hey, Hinami-chan, why did--"
"I'll tell mom and dad I still have you! And I'll draw another one!" Said Hinami, and she took out a pile of paper. "Onii-chan, let's go to the roof, okay?" Said Hinami. Kaneki nodded and smiled. They went out of the room.
"Onee-chan, let's go to the roof!" Said Hinami, tapping Touka's shoulder. "Huh? Why?" Asked Touka, taking her headset off. "Just come with us, I have a lot of things to tell mom and dad!" Said Hinami. Touka smiled and stood up, and the three went to the roof.
The night view of the city was beautiful, and the wind and the temperature were comfortable. Hinami took out the paper and started to write.
"Looks like it worked." Said Touka, standing beside Kaneki. "Yeah, that's what I did." Said Kaneki. And Hinami started to throw the paper airplanes. She kept throwing and throwing until the paper was used up, and she fold her sketch into an airplane, and turned and looked at Kaneki and Touka.
"It's the last one, onii-chan, onee-chan, can we throw it together?" Said Hinami. The two nodded and walked toward her. They stood behind her, hugging her on the both sides, just like the sketch, and the three held the paper airplane together.
"On three, okay?" Said Hinami, and the two nodded. "Okay, one, two, three!" Said Hinami, and the three threw the plane together. They watched it flew, until it disappeared in the darkness.
"MOM!!! DAD!!! I WILL BE STRONG!!! I HAVE ONII-CHAN AND ONEE-CHAN AND EVERYONE HERE AT ANTEIKU!!! PLEASE DON'T WORRY ABOUT ME!!!!" She shouted, and tears were running downing her face, but she was smiling. She walked back to Kaneki and Touka. "Let's go, onii-chan, onee-chan!" Said Hinami. She looked like she was happy and cheerful again, not that timid, gloomy little girl anymore.
"Okay, let's go." Said Kaneki. Hinami went down first, and the two followed, and little did they know, they were holding hands after they got to the roof, and none of them had noticed that. "Hey, onii-chan, can I ask you a question?" Asked Hinami. "Sure, what is it?" Said Kaneki. "Can you tutor me after your exams are over?" Asked Hinami. The two laughed, and Hinami giggled.
"Yeah, of course!" Said Kaneki.

I really like this one actually. And I really like to throw paper planes when I was a kid, so that part's kinda like my own experience. Anyway, thanks for reading!!!!
