Bryce: Devin Gets Engaged, Mentally
Devin. Bryce thought. He tried to call out his name but his lips won’t move. He stayed there staring at him, trying to send a message that he was there. Devin looked different, he lost some weight and his hair lay flat on his head rather than waxed and up.
Belle had a slight shocked moment as she can’t stop but stare. “Can you please watch this guy for me? I really need to go to the ladies room.” Belle pleaded and didn’t even have to put a pouting face on because Devin said yes. Belle hugged him and hurried along.
Devin had a good look at Bryce, finally someone recognized him but it seemed that he didn’t as he walked towards the room trying to overhear the conversation that was going inside. Bryce tried to utter a word, tried to make any sound just to catch his attention, there was nothing. His throat felt dessert dry and so did the inside of his mouth but it was his lips that didn’t want to cooperate.
Bryce quickly heard the distinct sound of a weak hearth signature in the heart monitor coming from inside the room. The beeping was very slow and unstable. It was a good thing that the door was left with a slight opening where he heard a female voice talking by herself, but Bryce realized that it wasn’t just a female voice, it was his sister’s. He then tried harder to speak or to utter any word but it frustrated him that he wasn’t able to.
Even though Lavander talked in a faint voice, Bryce heard her like the wind was whispering anything she said into his ears. Everything else around him was loud but he focused on listening to what his sister had to say.
“You know when I first saw you, the moment you pointed your gun to my face, I thought you were a younger version of Mark Salling but instead of a Mohawk you have a military cut hair.” Lavander said, Bryce couldn’t help but notice that Devin was listening hardly with hands pressed against the wall as he went near the slight opening almost peeking.
“I think that was funny,” Lavander said then there was a small moment of silence followed by Devin’s heavy breathing, just him listening.
“When you said that you love me, you were the first thing that came into my mind not Devin,” Lavander said, “I’ve never felt that way before, you were dedicated, smooth and may I say irresistible.” She chuckled a little then stopped herself from it.
Bryce moved his sight to Devin whose head was tilted downwards with almost teary eyes, trying to show that he was not hurt at all, trying to save himself from the attention of people who stopped and stared. He crept closer to the door when Bryce’s sister spoke softer and listened some more.
“You had that smile that could light up my world, actually everyone in the room,” Lavander said. “When you laugh, I love how you keep it classy and not overdone. I just found that interesting about you.”
Bryce had no clue what was going on, he’d clearly been away for a long time to miss something big like that. The pumping of the patient’s heart grew weaker almost dying as he heard it directly from the patient’s chest. Small thumps that might have affected his breathing as well.
“I love how you made me feel safe whenever I’m with you, I really do.” His sister said then Devin’s heart was crushed even more as he was sniffing and rubbing a tear that escaped from his eye.
“Enzo,” Lavander softly whispered then Bryce recalled Enzo, the first purple they’ve met. He came out with a strong and influential personality and then there he was in a hospital with a weak heart that was close to dying. Different assumptions came to Bryce’s thoughts but none of them were quite sure yet. “Enzo,” she whispered again and Devin’s head was already inside the room trying to get a better look.
“I love you,” Lavander finally said and Devin slowly backed away, he kept on walking backwards until he bumped on Bryce’s wheelchair. Bryce wanted to move but his impassive facial expression made him looked like he didn’t care. Bryce managed to move one of his finger and touched the small part of Devin’s leg but he didn’t notice the effort at all.
“There you are,” the other girl came in from behind. She had a small pack of gummy bear on one hand and coffee on the other. She was searching for Belle but found Bryce instead alone and was a bit surprised with that, but the other girl didn’t help notice Devin’s teary eye, she placed the pack of gummy bears on Bryce’s lap and talked to him.
“Are you alright?” she asked as she took a sip out of his hot coffee and didn’t flinch or affected with its temperature.
Devin wiped the tear on his left cheek and smiled. “Yeah, totally,”
“Is you friend in that room?” she asked.
Devin looked back at the room and back at her. “Yes, actually,” he rubbed his palms together as it seemed that he didn’t want the attention right now.
“I promise you,” the girl took Devin’s hand and gave him a warm smile, “he’s going to be fine. Trust me, this guy was in a coma and we never thought he would never wake up but he just did and I think he has amnesia but the good news is that he’s alright and your friend will as well.” She stated then offered some of her gummy bears which Devin refused. Bryce was surprised with his sudden action; Devin loved gummy bears and would never refuse when offered.
Devin took a good look at Bryce and seemed that he never recognized him, especially with the mask on. “That’s great news,” Devin weakly smiled and nodded.
“He’s going to be alright,” the girl smiled and gave him a hug which Devin didn’t resent even though she was a complete stranger.
Beeeeeeeeeep…
The long continuous beep startled both of them.
Enzo?” Lavander said and this time Devin heard it clear without trying to peek his head inside the room.
Both of them looked back at the room, even the other girl seemed to be in shock. “Oh I’m so sorry,”
Devin started to tear up but not excessively, he wiped them off and looked back at the room. “It’s okay, I better get back in there.” He said and swung the door open. Bryce finally had a good look inside. Enzo was deeply injured with his whole body on bandages. Bryce had a hard time believing that Enzo was dead, he was shocked as the other girl was.
A group of medical people rushed to the room with their defibrillator quickly trying to revive Enzo. The other girl stood in terror; she felt empathy even for a stranger, maybe because she had a small bond with Devin.
Lavander moved back slowly, in shock of what happened. She bumped into Devin who was starring on what was happening. They were trying to revive Enzo but his heart monitor still showed one straight line.
Bryce’s sister was hugging Devin not wanting to look back as they were still working on Enzo. His chest rose as they shocked him with every possible volt they could, he wasn’t waking up until it came for the time that they turned his heart monitor off and brought the sheets up covering his face.
The other girl’s eyes widened when the group of medical people started to leave one by one. Bryce’s sister seemed to follow their footsteps and gazed over him, she was directly staring at his eyes. Bryce wanted to scream but he wasn’t able to like previous trials, nothing was working properly and he grew more and more frustrated on that.
Lavander and Devin walked towards Enzo’s body as if they hadn’t noticed Bryce. He wanted to cry but that didn’t even worked out properly, all he did was stare at them as they mourn for their loss.
Belle came in looking fresh from the bathroom, she got totally confused when she saw that her companion was staring at the room with eyes teary.
“Where’s the hot guy who’s guarding him?” Belle asked and her friend pointed at the room where Lavander and Devin were grieving.
It took Belle some time before what happened registered into her brain. “That’s so sad,”
Lavander looked over the door where she met Bryce’s eyes once again. This time he knew that she recognized him, she had a longer look than before and the connection felt right. Bryce tried to communicate mentally but that seemed to fail as well.
“Well, he is really hot,” Belle said and pushed the wheelchair forward. Bryce wanted to stomp his feet on the ground and ran to their room but all he did was blink faster than usual and hoped they noticed. They didn’t.
“Really? He’s friend just died.” The other girl stated as she nibbled on some more gummy bears and finished the coffee then disposed the cup at a nearby bin.
“Well I think I’m going to marry him,” Belle said with the quite hallucination accent.
“You say that to every man you meet,” the other girl laughed as she threw a gummy bear’s head into Belle’s face.
“No this time I’m serious,” Belle said then gave her friend an elbow bump.
Bryce gave up and moved his head facing forward to see where they were going. The hospital wasn’t busy, only a few patients came in so the whole ride to the exit was smooth. They finally took the mask off his face and he breathed in much better.
Bryce attention was shifted to a pale thin guy on crutches with dreadlock on his hair; he had food on plastics on one hand as he struggled to walk. They walked passed by him and his eyes seemed to meet Bryce’s. He was confused and shocked on the same time.
They finally made it to a black SUV where they had a hard time putting Bryce in, as they did that, Bryce wasn’t able to help from noticing that the man was still staring at him.
“Bryce?” The boy whispered but Bryce heard him clearly from where he was at.
